Captain Hanaway Post No. 88 Grand Army of the Republic ribbon. This ribbon features a small celluloid plaque with GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC and the GAR symbol printed on it. It also includes a larger celluloid plaque featuring two crossed American flags, the GAR monogram and the GAR symbol as well as silver metallic threads. Capt. Hannaway/Post No.88/Bowling Green, Kentucky. and HONOR THE NOBLE DEAD are printed on the ribbon in silver lettering. Note: With its motto of Fraternity, charity and loyalty, advocacy of support for veterans and their survivors was a major organizational purpose of the Grand Army of the Republic. One example occurred in 1888 when Representative Whiteside Godfrey Hunter, an Irish immigrant, former Union Army surgeon and Republican Congressman from Burkesville, submitted a petition from the members of the Robert Hanaway Post No. 88 of Bowling Green in support of the private pension disability bill to the Committee on Invalid Pensions. Two years later, the U. S. Congress passed the Disability Pension Act of 1890 which expanded the access of veterans to pensions.https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/star/1079/thumbnail.jp
