Quantization of the Bianchi type-IX model in supergravity with a cosmological constant
Diagonal Bianchi type-IX models are studied in the quantum theory of supergravity with a cosmological constant. It is shown, by imposing the
supersymmetry and Lorentz quantum constraints, that there are no physical
quantum states in this model. The Friedmann model in supergravity
with cosmological constant does admit quantum states. However, the Bianchi
type-IX model provides a better guide to the behaviour of a generic state,
since more gravitino modes are available to be excited. These results indicate
that there may be no physical quantum states in the full theory of
supergravity with a non-zero cosmological constant. are available to be

Supersymmetric minisuperspace with non-vanishing fermion number
The Lagrangean of supergravity is dimensionally reduced to one
(time-like) dimension assuming spatial homogeneity of any Bianchi type within
class A of the classification of Ellis and McCallum. The algebra of the
supersymmetry generators, the Lorentz generators, the diffeomorphism generators
and the Hamiltonian generator is determined and found to close. In contrast to
earlier work, infinitely many physical states with non-vanishing even fermion
number are found to exist in these models, indicating that minisuperspace
models in supergravity may be just as useful as in pure gravity.Comment: 4 page
Quantum states on supersymmetric minisuperspace with a cosmological constant
Spatially homogeneous models in quantum supergravity with a nonvanishing
cosmological constant are studied. A class of exact nontrivial solutions of the
supersymmetry and Lorentz constraints is obtained in terms of the Chern-Simons
action on the spatially homogeneous 3-manifold, both in Ashketar variables
where the solution is explicit up to reality conditions, and, more concretely,
in the tetrad-representation, where the solutions are given as integral
representations differing only by the contours of integration. In the limit of
a vanishing cosmological constant earlier exact solutions for Bianchi type IX
models in the tetrad-representation are recovered and additional asymmetric

Achieving Consistent Doppler Measurements from SDO/HMI Vector Field Inversions
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is delivering vector field observations of
the full solar disk with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution;
however, the satellite is in a highly inclined geostationary orbit. The
relative spacecraft-Sun velocity varies by ~km/s over a day which
introduces major orbital artifacts in the Helioseismic Magnetic Imager data. We
demonstrate that the orbital artifacts contaminate all spatial and temporal
scales in the data. We describe a newly-developed three stage procedure for
mitigating these artifacts in the Doppler data derived from the Milne-Eddington
inversions in the HMI Pipeline. This procedure was applied to full disk images
of AR11084 to produce consistent Dopplergrams. The data adjustments reduce the
power in the orbital artifacts by 31dB. Furthermore, we analyze in detail the
corrected images and show that our procedure greatly improve the temporal and
spectral properties of the data without adding any new artifacts. We conclude
that this new and easily implemented procedure makes a dramatic improvement in
the consistency of the HMI data and in its usefulness for precision scientific

Hot forming of silicon sheet, silicon sheet growth development for the large area silicon sheet task of the low cost silicon solar array project
The hot workability of polycrystalline silicon was studied. Uniaxail stress-strain curves are given for strain rates in the range of .0001 to .1/sec and temperatures from 1100 to 1380 C. At the highest strain rates at 1380 C axial strains in excess of 20% were easily obtainable without cracking. After deformations of 36%, recrystallization was completed within 0.1 hr at 1380 C. When the recrystallization was complete, there was still a small volume fraction of unrecyrstallized material which appeared very stable and may degrade the electronic properties of the bulk materials. Texture measurements showed that the as-produced vapor deposited polycrystalline rods have a 110 fiber texture with the 110 direction parallel to the growth direction and no preferred orientation about this axis. Upon axial compression perpendicular to the growth direction, the former 110 fiber axis changed to 111 and the compression axis became 110 . Recrystallization changed the texture to 110 along the former fiber axis and to 100 along the compression axis
Efficient syntheses of climate relevant isoprene nitrates and (1R,5S)-(−)-myrtenol nitrate
Here we report the chemoselective synthesis of several important, climate relevant isoprene nitrates using silver nitrate to mediate a ’halide for nitrate’ substitution. Employing readily available starting materials, reagents and Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons chemistry the synthesis of easily separable, synthetically versatile ‘key building blocks’ (E)- and (Z)-3-methyl-4-chlorobut-2-en-1-ol as well as (E)- and (Z)-1-((2-methyl-4-bromobut-2-enyloxy)methyl)-4-methoxybenzene has been achieved using cheap, ’off the shelf’ materials. Exploiting their reactivity we have studied their ability to undergo an ‘allylic halide for allylic nitrate’ substitution reaction which we demonstrate generates (E)- and (Z)-3-methyl-4-hydroxybut-2-enyl nitrate, and (E)- and (Z)-2-methyl-4-hydroxybut-2-enyl nitrates (‘isoprene nitrates’) in 66–80% overall yields. Using NOESY experiments the elucidation of the carbon–carbon double bond configuration within the purified isoprene nitrates has been established. Further exemplifying our ‘halide for nitrate’ substitution chemistry we outline the straightforward transformation of (1R,2S)-(−)-myrtenol bromide into the previously unknown monoterpene nitrate (1R,2S)-(−)-myrtenol nitrate
The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: The nearby supermassive black hole mass function
We highlight the correlation between a galaxy's supermassive black hole mass
and the Sersic-index of the host spheroid or bulge component. From our
bulge-disk decompositions of 10 095 galaxies, drawn from the Millennium Galaxy
Catalogue, we construct the local (z < 0.18) mass function of supermassive
black holes. We compare our results to those of McLure & Dunlop (2004) and
conclude that the mass density of supermassive black holes may be marginally
higher than previously supposed. This increase is predominantly due to the
inclusion of low mass and later-type bulges. More details will be presented in

Passive Versus Active Tuberculosis Case Finding and Isoniazid Preventive Therapy Among Household Contacts in a Rural District of Malawi.
SETTING: Thyolo district, rural Malawi. OBJECTIVES: To compare passive with active case finding among household contacts of smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients for 1) TB case detection and 2) the proportion of child contacts aged under 6 years who are placed on isoniazid (INH) preventive therapy. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Passive and active case finding was conducted among household contacts, and the uptake of INH preventive therapy in children was assessed. RESULTS: There were 189 index TB cases and 985 household contacts. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence among index cases was 69%. Prevalence of TB by passive case finding among 524 household contacts was 0.19% (191/100000), which was significantly lower than with active finding among 461 contacts (1.74%, 1735/100000, P = 0.01). Of 126 children in the passive cohort, 22 (17%) received INH, while in the active cohort 25 (22%) of 113 children received the drug. Transport costs associated with chest X-ray (CXR) screening were the major reason for low INH uptake. CONCLUSIONS: Where the majority of TB patients are HIV-positive, active case finding among household contacts yields nine times more TB cases and is an opportunity for reducing TB morbidity and mortality.
