The trajectory of anti-recEm18 antibody levels determines follow-up after curative resection of hepatic alveolar echinococcosis.
INTRODUCTION
Recurrence after curative resection of hepatic alveolar echinococcosis remains a clinical challenge. The current study tested if assessment of anti-recEm18 allows for postsurgical patient surveillance.
METHODS
A retrospective study with patients undergoing liver resection for alveolar echinococcosis (n = 88) at the University Hospital Bern from 2002 to 2020 and at the University Hospital and Medical Center Ulm from 2011 to 2017 was performed. Analysis was directed to determine a potential association of pre- and postoperative values of anti-recEm18 with clinical outcomes.
RESULTS
Anti-recEm18 had a linear correlation to the maximum lesion diameter (R2 = 0.558). Three trajectories of anti-recEm18 were identified based on a threshold of 10 AU/ml: "Em18-low" (n = 31), "responders" (n = 53) and "residual disease" (n = 4). The decline of anti-recEm18 in "responders" reached a plateau after 10.9 months at which levels decreased by 90%. The only patient with recurrence in the entire population was also the only patient with a secondary increase of anti-recEm18.
CONCLUSION
In patients with preoperative elevated values, anti-recEm18 confirms curative surgery at 12 months follow-up and allows for long-term surveillance
Absence of Two-Dimensional Bragg Glasses
The stability to dislocations of the elastic phase, or ``Bragg glass'', of a
randomly pinned elastic medium in two dimensions is studied using the
minimum-cost-flow algorithm for a disordered fully-packed loop model. The
elastic phase is found to be unstable to dislocations due to the quenched
disorder. The energetics of dislocations are discussed within the framework of
renormalization group predictions as well as in terms of a domain wall picture.Comment: 5 pages, REVTEX, 3 figures included. Further information can be

Mode-locking in ac-driven vortex lattices with random pinning
We find mode-locking steps in simulated current-voltage characteristics of
ac-driven vortex lattices with {\it random} pinning. For low frequencies there
is mode-locking above a finite ac force amplitude, while for large frequencies
there is mode-locking for any small ac force. This is correlated with the
nature of temporal order in the different regimes in the absence of ac drive.
The mode-locked state is a frozen solid pinned in the moving reference of
frame, and the depinning from the step shows plastic flow and hysteresis.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Quantum Collective Creep: a Quasiclassical Langevin Equation Approach
The dynamics of an elastic medium driven through a random medium by a small
applied force is investigated in the low-temperature limit where quantum
fluctuations dominate. The motion proceeds via tunneling of segments of the
manifold through barriers whose size grows with decreasing driving force .
In the limit of small drive, at zero-temperature the average velocity has the
form . For strongly
dissipative dynamics, there is a wide range of forces where the dissipation
dominates and the velocity--force characteristics takes the form
, with the
action for a typical tunneling event, the force dependence being determined by
the roughness exponent of the -dimensional manifold. This result
agrees with the one obtained via simple scaling considerations. Surprisingly,
for asymptotically low forces or for the case when the massive dynamics is
dominant, the resulting quantum creep law is {\it not} of the usual form with a
rate proportional to ; rather we find corresponding to and , with the naive scaling exponent for massive
dynamics. Our analysis is based on the quasi-classical Langevin approximation
with a noise obeying the quantum fluctuation--dissipation theorem. The many
space and time scales involved in the dynamics are treated via a functional
renormalization group analysis related to that used previously to treat the
classical dynamics of such systems. Various potential difficulties with these
approaches to the multi-scale dynamics -- both classical and quantum -- are
raised and questions about the validity of the results are discussed.Comment: RevTeX, 30 pages, 8 figures inserte
Multi-vendor standardized sequence for edited magnetic resonance spectroscopy
Spectral editing allows direct measurement of low-concentration metabolites, such as GABA, glutathione (GSH) and lactate (Lac), relevant for understanding brain (patho)physiology. The most widely used spectral editing technique is MEGA-PRESS, which has been diversely implemented across research sites and vendors, resulting in variations in the final resolved edited signal. In this paper, we describe an effort to develop a new universal MEGA-PRESS sequence with HERMES functionality for the major MR vendor platforms with standardized RF pulse shapes, durations, amplitudes and timings. New RF pulses were generated for the universal sequence. Phantom experiments were conducted on Philips, Siemens, GE and Canon 3 T MRI scanners using 32-channel head coils. In vivo experiments were performed on the same six subjects on Philips and Siemens scanners, and on two additional subjects, one on GE and one on Canon scanners. On each platform, edited MRS experiments were conducted with the vendor-native and universal MEGA-PRESS sequences for GABA (TE = 68 ms) and Lac editing (TE = 140 ms). Additionally, HERMES for GABA and GSH was performed using the universal sequence at TE = 80 ms. The universal sequence improves inter-vendor similarity of GABA-edited and Lac-edited MEGA-PRESS spectra. The universal HERMES sequence yields both GABA- and GSH-edited spectra with negligible levels of crosstalk on all four platforms, and with strong agreement among vendors for both edited spectra. In vivo GABA+/Cr, Lac/Cr and GSH/Cr ratios showed relatively low variation between scanners using the universal sequence. In conclusion, phantom and in vivo experiments demonstrate successful implementation of the universal sequence across all four major vendors, allowing editing of several metabolites across a range of TEs.publishedVersio
Mode-locking in driven vortex lattices with transverse ac-drive and random pinning
We find mode-locking steps in simulated current-voltage characteristics of
driven vortex lattices with {\it random} pinning when an applied ac-current is
{\it perpendicular} to the dc-current. For low frequencies there is
mode-locking only above a non-zero threshold ac force amplitude, while for
large frequencies there is mode-locking for any small ac force. This is
consistent with the nature of {\it transverse} temporal order in the different
regimes in the absence of an applied ac-drive. For large frequencies the
magnitude of the fundamental mode-locked step depends linearly with the ac
force amplitude.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, .tar.gz fil
Exact multilocal renormalization on the effective action : application to the random sine Gordon model statics and non-equilibrium dynamics
We extend the exact multilocal renormalization group (RG) method to study the
flow of the effective action functional. This important physical quantity
satisfies an exact RG equation which is then expanded in multilocal components.
Integrating the nonlocal parts yields a closed exact RG equation for the local
part, to a given order in the local part. The method is illustrated on the O(N)
model by straightforwardly recovering the exponent and scaling
functions. Then it is applied to study the glass phase of the Cardy-Ostlund,
random phase sine Gordon model near the glass transition temperature. The
static correlations and equilibrium dynamical exponent are recovered and
several new results are obtained. The equilibrium two-point scaling functions
are obtained. The nonequilibrium, finite momentum, two-time response and
correlations are computed. They are shown to exhibit scaling forms,
characterized by novel exponents , as well as
universal scaling functions that we compute. The fluctuation dissipation ratio
is found to be non trivial and of the form . Analogies and
differences with pure critical models are discussed.Comment: 33 pages, RevTe
Transverse phase-locking in fully frustrated Josephson junction arrays: a new type of fractional giant steps
We study, analytically and numerically, phase locking of driven vortex
lattices in fully-frustrated Josephson junction arrays at zero temperature. We
consider the case when an ac current is applied {\it perpendicular} to a dc
current. We observe phase locking, steps in the current-voltage
characteristics, with a dependence on external ac-drive amplitude and frequency
qualitatively different from the Shapiro steps, observed when the ac and dc
currents are applied in parallel. Further, the critical current increases with
increasing transverse ac-drive amplitude, while it decreases for longitudinal
ac-drive. The critical current and the phase-locked current step width,
increase quadratically with (small) amplitudes of the ac-drive. For larger
amplitudes of the transverse ac-signal, we find windows where the critical
current is hysteretic, and windows where phase locking is suppressed due to
dynamical instabilities. We characterize the dynamical states around the
phase-locking interference condition in the curve with voltage noise,
Lyapunov exponents and Poincar\'e sections. We find that zero temperature
phase-locking behavior in large fully frustrated arrays is well described by an
effective four plaquette model.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure
