Devastating fire affected the fishing industry of Kasaragod, Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka State

On 12.11.1995 around 11.30 P.M. a fire occurred in the boat building yard at Kasaragod, 100 km south of Karwar in Uttara Kannada District, resulting in unprecedented devastation of property and materials. The fire damaged totally 3 boat building and repairing yards (the only ones available in the area) located on the left bank of the river Sharavati at its lower reaches in close proximity to the fish landing centre of Kasaragod

A note on the Scombroid fish Scomber japonicus observed along the Indian Coast

On 24. 2. 1999 a fish specimen closely resembling mackerel was observed along with the landings of mackerel [Rastrelliger Kanagurta) by a purse seiner at Tadri fishing harbour. The fish was later identified as Scomber Japonicus. Popularly called the chub mackerel

The largest mackerel ever caught in this part of the coast measured 366 mm in total length and weighed 592 g. The morphological measurements (in mm) recorded are Total length 366; Standard length 311; Head length 84; Inter-orbital distance 29; Pre-orbital distance 27; Pre-ventral distance 103; Maximum height of body 85; Snout length 27; Eye diameter 15.5; Pectorial fin length 39; Anterior dorsal height 42; Posterior dorsal height 29; Ventral fin length 35

Record-sized mackerel, Rastrelliger kanagurta caught from Karwar waters on the west coast of India

The largest mackerel ever caught from Karvar waters or for that matter the largest mackerel so far caught from the Indian waters measured 421 mm in total length and weighed 859 g in fresh condition. This female specimen was caught in purse seine from a depth of 70 meters off Karwar (west of the light house) on 19th August 1999. Two days earlier, on 17th August 1999, another comparatively smaller specimen, measuring347mm in total length and weighing 524 g. was landed by another purseiner. Thus the present specimen has broken all the earlier records (Table 1) in total length and weight. The fully grown female specimens had turgid ovaries. The well developed ovaries with fully packed ova indicate that even at such size mackeml spawns in. the nature. Every year at the begining of the "mackerel season" it is customary to observe larger adults in the catche

Destruction of eggs of catfish Tachysurus tenuispinis by purse seiners at Karwar

The unwarranted destruction of huge quantities of eggs of catfish, Tachysurus tenuispinis at coastal areas of Karnataka were reported in 1980. It was expected that due care would be exercised in the fishery by purse seiners, especially during spawning season for T.tenuispinis but the same catastrophe repeated in 1982 in Karwar and is discussed here. Almost all the catch consisted of males, most of them carrying eggs in their mouth. The estimated catch of eggs,which is of no demand, amounted to 4.5% of the total catch of T.tenuispinis. .In order to save this resource from complete depletion steps should be taken by educating the fishermen about the adverse effects
