    Information seeking in the Humanities: physicality and digitality

    This paper presents a brief overview of a research project that is examining the information seeking practices of humanities scholars. The results of this project are being used to develop digital resources to better support these work activities. Initial findings from a recent set of interviews is offered, revealing the importance of physical artefacts in the humanities scholars’ research processes and the limitations of digital resources. Finally, further work that is soon to be undertaken is summarised, and it is hoped that after participation in this workshop these ideas will be refined

    This paper examines the evolving landscape of modern digital games, emphasizing their nature as live services that continually evolve and adapt. In addition to engaging with the core gameplay, players and other stakeholders actively participate in various game-related experiences, such as tournaments and streaming. This interplay forms a vibrant and intricate ecosystem, facilitating the construction and dissemination of knowledge about the game. Such knowledge flow, accompanied by resulting behavioral changes, gives rise to the concept of a video game meta. Within the competitive gaming context, the meta represents the strategic and tactical knowledge that goes beyond the fundamental mechanics of the game, enabling players to gain a competitive advantage. We present a review of the state-of-the-art of knowledge for game metas and propose a novel model for the meta knowledge structure and propagation that accounts for this ecosystem, based on a review of the academic literature and practical examples. By exploring the dynamics of knowledge exchange and its influence on gameplay, the review presented here sheds light on the intricate relationship between game evolution, player engagement, and the associated emergence of game meta

    Output Feedback Stabilization for Dynamic MIMO Semi-linear Stochastic Systems with Output Randomness Attenuation

    In this paper, the problem of randomness attenuation is investigated for a class of MIMO semi-linear stochastic systems. To achieve this control objective, a m-block backstepping controller is designed to stabilize the closed-loop systems in probability sense. In addition, the output randomness attenuation can be achieved by optimising the design parameters using minimum entropy criterion. The effectiveness of this presented control algorithm can be verified by a given numerical example. In summary, the main contributions of this paper are characterized as follows: (1) an output feedback design method is adapted to stabilise the dynamic multi-variable semi-linear stochastic systems by block backstepping; (2) randomness of the system output is attenuated by searching the optimal design parameter based on the entropy criterion; (3) a framework of performance enhancement for stochastic systems is developed

    Proton radiation damage study of the next generation of swept charge devices

    The first generation of Swept Charge Device (SCD) the e2v technologies plc CCD54 was used in the Demonstration of a Compact Imaging X-ray Spectrometer (D-CIXS) launched in 2003 and again in the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) instrument currently in orbit around the Moon. The main source of decreased energy resolution in both cases is proton damage, from trapped and solar protons respectively. This paper presents the results from an experimental study to evaluate the performance of the next generation of SCD the CCD234 and CCD236 irradiated with a 10 MeV equivalent proton fluence of 3.0?108 protons.cm-2, demonstrating the factor of two increase in radiation hardness when compared to the CCD54. In particular the increased dark current, decrease in energy resolution and the degradation of charge transfer efficiency (CTE) are described

    An examination of the physical and the digital qualities of humanities research

    Traditionally humanities scholars have worked in physical environments and with physical artefacts. Libraries are familiar places, built on cultural traditions over thousands of years, and books are comfortable research companions. Digital tools are a more recent addition to the resources available to a researcher. This paper explores both the physical and the digital qualities of modern humanities research, drawing on existing literature and presenting a study of humanities scholars’ perceptions of the research resources they use. We highlight aspects of the physical and digital that can facilitate or hinder the researcher, focusing on three themes that emerge from the data: the working environment; the experience of finding resources; and the experience of working with documents. Rather than aiming to replace physical texts and libraries by digital surrogates, providers need to recognise the complementary roles they play: digital information environments have the potential to provide improved access and analysis features and the facility to exploit the library from any place, while the physical library and resources provide greater authenticity, trustworthiness and the demand to be in a particular place with important material properties
