International audienceIn De vampiros y otros asuntos amorosos, the first narrative work by Valencian writer Alfons Cervera, the reader encounters a multitude of very short stories, all of which show just how cruel men can become, and how life necessarily catches them in a whirlwind of violence. Centred on the sentimental and carnal relationships of the various protagonists, these short stories unfold in the space of a few lines to show how the characters move between sensual pleasure and physical and/or psychological brutality. Fantasy often intrudes into these stories to underline the intensity of the savagery that governs their relationships. In fact, such excessive bloodshed can be interpreted as a desire to delve into the depths of human hearts: the aim is to get to know post-modern man in depth by analysing his exacerbated behaviour as a symptom of the ferocity of the universe in which he is mired, and where the only possible response to violence is violence.
International audienceIn his novel published in 2017, La noche en que los Beatles llegaron a Barcelona, the Valencian writer Alfons Cervera continues the memorial saga he began with the Las voces fugitivas cycle, which aims to combat the oblivion linked to the atrocities committed during Francoism that still exist today. This work draws a parallel between the songs performed by the Beatles during a concert in Barcelona in 1965 and the scenes of torture suffered by a young man in a police basement. Throughout the story, the work mixes historical events that really happened with fictional but plausible characters and situations: the invented elements that rub shoulders with the real events thus seem to have potentially happened. This process follows an apocalyptic mechanism, in the etymological sense of the term: the aim is to reveal the horrors of the dictatorship through a hybrid poetics of verisimilitude between fiction and reality. We discover the extent to which Franco's infamies bordered on the unreal and unimaginable, and we denounce the lies on which the dictatorship was based. Alfons Cervera's poetics of verisimilitude gives the readers an active role, so that they becomes aware of such ignominy and, in an apocalyptic dynamic, brings to an end a society dominated by oblivion, promoted by the spirit of Transition.
International audienceLos caminos de vuelta (2015) by Alfons Cervera and Ella pisĂł la Luna (2019) by BelĂ©n Gopegui share the distinctive feature of mixing text and photographs within their pages, the photographs being selected and organised by the authors or, in Cervera's case, even taken by the writer himself. On the one hand, the photographs depict real places that inspired the setting of the Valencian author's memorial saga, while on the other they portray the Madrid author's mother. Although the two books do not, of course, deal with similar themes, there is a documentary aspect to them, in that the phototypes either motivate the writing, as a starting point for the creative act, or, conversely, support and illustrate what is written, like proof of what is being said. In this way, the combination of text and image firmly anchors the portraits in reality, offering up for viewing and reading the life experiences of particular individuals (specifically, the Cerverian maquis and their Gopeguian relatives), with a universal scope, granting them a certain representativeness, and making them spokespersons for the history of other maquis and other women in their struggles. Indeed, the two works are united by a methodological intericonotextuality, since they aspire to shed light on what is obscured in the shadowy zones of history, by constituting themselves as veritable revelations of the past, thanks to an intermedial creation with autobiographical or metaliterary overtones. Through such self-reflexive points of view, they also assert the importance of what remains outside and behind the lens of the camera and on the other side of the pen: the point of view chosen says a lot about the person taking the photos and holding the pencil, which ultimately makes it possible to apprehend the person writing and photographing, thanks to a self-portrait in negative.
International audienceAlfons Cervera's novel Tantas lágrimas han corrido desde entonces (2012) is based on a mosaic structure, in every sense of the word. Indeed, taking the Spanish Republican exile as its main theme, the narrative is constructed between fragmentation and reunion of its constituent elements, also recalling the story of the patriarch Moses, who led the Hebrews out of Egypt. Fragments from different periods in the lives of the characters and the homodiegetic narrator are constantly shifting back and forth to show just how heartbreaking the exile was, causing those who endured it to lose their bearings in terms of both space and identity. The evocations of the narrator's life experiences are populated by characters constructed through the piecemeal revelation of their personal traumatic memories, which are nonetheless linked to one another, and ultimately paint the portrait of an exiled figure with a thousand faces. The polyphony of their voices rises to describe the journey from their country, hostile to any ideology opposed to Francoism, to France, no more welcoming, which ends up representing a false semblance of the Promised Land. The narrator takes on the role of whistleblower through his narrative, a role he assumes thanks to his close association with another character very similar to the book's author, who gives him the strength to act as a guide and a conduit of historical knowledge to the readership, like a modern-day Moses who leads the audience to the realisation that there is a part of contemporary history that is often overlooked.
International audienceIn his book La Ciudad oscura (1987), Alfons Cervera sketches a disillusioned post-transitional Spain throughout a wide range of short stories. The Valencian author’s third fictional work is a conduit for the socio-political discontent of its time, both through the themes it addresses as a whole and thanks to the fragmentary style displayed in each tale. Using a politico-affective poetics, it draws a parallel between collective disappointment and individual dereliction: through the prism of decaying human connections – and deteriorating love relationships more particularly –, it stages a variety of characters whose existence is ruled by suffering. This suffering can be divided into three categories that structure the narratives. The first one is that of the passion that exists within couples and systematically turns into violence, thus bringingto light that love union is but an illusion facing the overwhelming alterity that underminesevery relationship. Secondly, the pathos endured by the protagonists may take the shape of forced patience, insofar as if the characters do not end up tearing each other apart, in an urban context that favours communication breakdowns, they are confronted with an extreme loneliness due to their inability to find in others a satisfying company. Thirdly, the only way for them to find a wholesome relationship to alterity may be given to them outside the diegesis, namely by the readers, thanks to their empathic understanding of the characters’ situation. This empathy compensates for the characters’ painful isolation, through which the readers are reminded of their own actual disenchantment.
International audienceLanguage multiplicity is a natural phenomenon from early life stages, and this diversity needs to be explored in the early construction of a subjectivity, both in literature and in the real world. What linguists have already demonstrated – that the babble of a small child (which shares an etymological root with Babel) contains all the languages of the world in actuality, and not just in potentiality – has been displayed in recent literary works. Focusing on the variety of languages experienced, heard and spoken in a literary childhood further grounds Yasemin Yildiz's paradigm of the post-monolingual condition (2012). This introduction to the edited volume "The Multilingual Child in Literature" draws on texts by Michel Serres (Le Tiers-Instruit, 1991), Elias Canetti (The Tongue Set Free, 1977) and Lily Robert-Foley (The Duty to Presence, 2022) in order to demonstrate that looking at literary childhoods – even supposedly monolingual ones – may enable one to understand our position "beyond the mother tongue", as coined by Yasemin Yildiz.

This edited volume aims to extend the findings of the conference "The Figure of the Multilingual Child in Literature" which took place at the University of Caen Normandy on the 18th of November 2021. On the one hand, the question of literary multilingualism is a recent object of study despite the seminal work of L. Forster in the 1970s. On the other hand, the figure of the child (narrator or character) in literature has been widely studied since the 1960s: as Philippe Ariès reminds us, until Rousseau's Confessions, which heralded the advent of the childhood narrative in 19th-century Europe, childhood is a mere part of a human subject’s prehistory. In literature, the child is thus a figure of little interest. As a result, the figure of the multilingual child has widely been overlooked in the field of literary studies of multilingualism.Mutilingualism refers to the multiplicity of languages and the mixture of languages as themes, but also to the ways in which languages are represented and staged in literature. Moreover, the hybridity of languages in the literary text is a fascinating object of study which can be taken into account scholars from many fields, in line with what R. Grutman and M. Suchet call heterolingualism. Heterolingual texts are truly situated "at the crossroads of languages": they mixed several idioms. This edited volume aims at analysing child narrators and/or figures evolving in and between several languages – either because they speak at least two languages, or because their family, school or country is made up of a web of languages. Whether one thinks of Elias Canetti, Nancy Huston, Vassilis Alexakis, Augusto Roa Bastos (Hijo de hombre) or Agota Kristof, multilingual children are frequent characters in multilingual literature. These child figures can be autobiographical or autofictional shadows of the author – as explored in the recent work of A. Ausoni. They can also be pure beings of paper. In all these cases, their identity is made of a fabric woven of all their languages, whether they are acquired simultaneously or successively, within the otherness of their monolingual fellow creatures. This edited volume will explore the fictionalisation of children's characters and/or narrators who speak several languages and the literary implications of such linguistic mixing.Contributions can also look at imaginaries and representations of languages. These themes appear in narratives portraying multilingual childhood, especially when child figures are confronted with the monolingualism of other narrative instances. The phenomena of language assimilation, hybridity, attrition, diglossia, etc. and their literary rendering can also be studied. What associations and imaginaries of languages are deployed in literature, depending the linguistic context experienced in childhood?Contributors are invited to examine the role of the author in the creation of multilingual fictions. Authors are in a paradoxical situation indeed, since they are caught between two representations: language learning and language teaching (whether they teach themselves or their readers). What does the choice – or the abandonment – of a language of writing imply when said language was spoken by the author in their childhood? We are looking forward to reading contributions by authors looking at literary works in French, Spanish, German, English and Italian: these languages have a strong potential for mixing with each other due to school policies geared towards European languages. Mixing of other regional languages or dialects within countries that have official or national languages can also be taken into account.Contributions examining works of children's literature are also welcome.Research axesPapers may refer to one of the four themes that structured the original conference:Childhood narratives by multilingual autobiographers, and linguistic creativityHow is multilingualism rendered in literature when a child figure is involved? Authors are encouraged to look at the representation of languages by child narrators and at the multilingual child as a specific narrative voice. Questions of self-writing between languages (translingualism as understood by A. Ausoni) from childhood, for example from a genetic point of view (diaries, autofiction, autobiography) can be considered. In this respect, questions of translatology/traductology and self-translation may be considered if they pertain to childhood-related themes, especially within self-narration.From home to the world: childhood languages, transmission and emancipatioa) Home: The theme of the multilingual children and their family home in literature can be looked at. Questions related to the intertwinement of emotions and languages (Pavlenko, 2005) within child characters can may be taken into account. Language play and psycholinguistic aspects can also be examined in this respect.b) The world: Issues pertaining to school language learning and multilingual pupils and students in literature are to be heeded. Further sociolinguistic considerations should be addressed: the multilingual child at school, their confrontation with a possibly hostile or monolingual allophone environment following Cazden's findings about the greater accuracy of metalinguistic awareness in multilingual children (Cazden, 1974).Furthermore, the function of the multilingual author is to be considered, in relation to aspects of language acquisition: is the author a learner when deploying multilingualism in literature? Is the author a teacher? If so, towards which other literary figures? Does the author aim at teaching or introducing a new language to the reader?Adolescence and the lure of language exoticism: identity and othernessUsually conceived as a time of self-discovery and discovery of the other, adolescence is set up as the moment when identity is built. This occurs in particular within the confrontation with otherness. This alterity can either be radicalised or, on the contrary, it can leave room for tolerance and mutual enrichment. Adolescents strives to determine what one is, and what one is not – and to explore what others are and are not. In this respect, mastering several languages can make this process of self-construction easier, or conversely more complex. What are the roles and functions related to languages within the construction of the self and the other during adolescence, and which literary issues pertain to these themes?Language as a homeland for multilingual youth without a fatherland?Growing up between languages can imply an intricate positioning towards the range of cultures which young multilingual speakers knows. Articles can look at cases where children and youth do not feel completely part of one or several cultures, or where they are rejected by one or several linguistic communities. Multilingual child characters or narrators are prone to experience such a loss of bearings, but this can also be the case for multilingual authors. Thanks to a literary narrative, or through the act of writing, they question their place in the world: how is this language and identity-related disorientation represented? By what means do they seek to resolve it? Literature, for its part, could open up a third way for youth without a reliable fatherland: can a language constitute a literary homeland for those who no longer have one – or conversely, who have too many of them?
