Status Report of the Measurement Service for the CERN Accelerator Logging

    Get PDF
The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) Logging service is aimed to satisfy the requirement of capturing and storing any relevant accelerator data to track its variation over time. This service is presently operational on the whole CERN accelerator complex, from ion and proton sources to LHC, and has become a critical component of the CERN control systems. The focus is given to the measurement part of this service, which is responsible for the data acquisition and preparation (processing, filtering, concentration) prior to its storage in database and file systems. Incoming data is often processed by a concentration layer, the processes that transform data of multiple devices into single values according to well defined rules and then publish them further on, to the LHC Logging among others. The paper describes the architecture and presents the solutions to the very challenging requirements imposed by the LHC in terms of overall performance and reliability. The efficiency of the data acquisition and filtering as well as the flexible software design are highlighted

A Framework for JAVA applications programs in the CERN PS control system

    Get PDF
The user interface for a system controlling 5 inter-connected accelerators is composed of a large number of windows organized in a tree structure of application programs with a console manager at the top. All programs run in a single Java Virtual Machine (JVM) without interfering with each other. The windows show accelerator data and interaction widgets. A framework has been built to design these windows and make them interact and cooperate with a minimum of effort from the programmers. A project manager controls the life cycle of the programs, including use of templates and CVS [3]. Program development and execution can be done on both the Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms through files that are visible to both systems

High Intensity Commissioning of the SPS LSS4 extraction for CNGS

    Get PDF
The SPS LSS4 fast extraction system will serve both the anti-clockwise ring of the LHC and the CERN Gran Sasso Neutrino project (CNGS). CNGS requires 2 fast extractions of 10.5 microsecond long batches, 50 milliseconds apart. Each batch will consist of 2.4 × 1013 protons at 400 GeV. These intensities are factor of 10 above the equipment damage limit in case of beam loss. Active (interlock system) and passive protection systems have to be in place to guarantee safe operation and to respect the radiation limits in zones close to the extraction region. In summer 2006 CNGS was commissioned including extraction with high intensity. A thorough setting-up of the CNGS extraction was carried out as part of the CNGS commissioning, including aperture and beam loss measurements, and defining and checking of interlock thresholds for extraction trajectory, beam loss monitors and radiation monitors. The relevant systems and risks are introduced in this paper, the commissioning results are summarised and comparisons with simulation predictions are presented

CERN Proton Synchrotron Complex High-Level Controls Renovation

    Get PDF
After a detailed study of the Proton Synchrotron (PS) complex requirements by experts of CERN controls & operation groups, a proposal to develop a new system, called Injector Controls Architecture (InCA), was presented to and accepted by the management late 2007. Aiming at the homogenisation of the control systems across CERN accelerators, InCA is based on components developed for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) but also new components required to fulfil operation needs. In 2008, the project was in its elaboration phase and we successfully validated its architecture and critical use-cases during several machine development sessions. After description of the architecture put in place and the components used, this paper describes the planning approach taken combining iterative development phases with deployment in operation for validation sessions

Progress with the Upgrade of the SPS for the HL-LHC Era

The demanding beam performance requirements of the High Luminosity (HL-) LHC project translate into a set of requirements and upgrade paths for the LHC injector complex. In this paper the performance requirements for the SPS and the known limitations are reviewed in the light of the 2012 operational experience. The various SPS upgrades in progress and still under consideration are described, in addition to the machine studies and simulations performed in 2012. The expected machine performance reach is estimated on the basis of the present knowledge, and the remaining decisions that still need to be made concerning upgrade options are detailed. The system of re-education through labor was a big creation during our socialist revolution and construction and is a China-characteristic socialist legal system. However, in the advance of the strategy of “ruled by law”, the historic limits and the defects of the System became more and more obvious, and aroused quite a lot of criticisms both home and abroad. In the past 50 more years, especially ...学位:法律硕士院系专业:法学院法律系_法律硕士(JM)学号:X200512013

IONS FOR LHC: STATUS OF THE INJECTOR CHAIN

    Get PDF
The LHC will, in addition to proton runs, be operated with Pb ions and provide collisions at energies of 5.5 TeV per nucleon pair, i.e. more than 1.1 PeV per event, to experiments. The transformation of CERN's ion injector complex (Linac3-LEIR-PS-SPS) to allow collision of ions in LHC in 2008 is well under way. The status of these modifications and the latest results of commissioning will be presented. The remaining challenges are reviewed
