Can Heavy WIMPs Be Captured by the Earth?
If weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in bound solar orbits are
systematically driven into the Sun by solar-system resonances (as Farinella et
al. have shown is the case for many Earth-crossing asteroids), then the capture
of high-mass WIMPs by the Earth would be affected dramatically because
high-mass WIMPs are captured primarily from bound orbits. WIMP capture would be
eliminated for M_x>630 GeV and would be highly suppressed for M_x>~150 GeV.
Annihilation of captured WIMPs and anti-WIMPs is expected to give rise to
neutrinos coming from the Earth's center. The absence of such a neutrino signal
has been used to place limits on WIMP parameters. At present, one does not know
if typical WIMP orbits are in fact affected by these resonances. Until this
question is investigated and resolved, one must (conservatively) assume that
they are. Hence, limits on high-mass WIMP parameters are significantly weaker

Luminosity Function of the Perigalactocentric Region
We present H and K photometry of 42,000 stars in an area of 250 arcmin
centered on the Galactic center. We use the photometry to construct a
dereddened K band luminosity function (LF) for this region, excluding the
excessively crowded inner 2' of the Galaxy. This LF is intermediate between the
LF of Baade's window and the LF of inner 2' of the Galactic center. We
speculate that the bright stars in this region have an age which is
intermediate between the starburst population in the Galactic center and the
old bulge population. We present the coordinates and mags for 16 stars with

Orientation of Demagnetized Bees
The orientation of honey bee dances is affected by the earth's magnetic field. Honey bees possess localized, well-oriented, stable and superparamagnetic domains of magnetite. Four lines of evidence suggest that the superparamagnetic domains of bees are more likely to be involved in magnetic field detectors than the stable domains. (1) Although the stable domains vary widely in size and number between bees, approximately 2×10^8 superparamagnetic domains are found reliably in all bees, and are restricted to there latively narrow size range of 300–350 Å. This suggests that the superparamagnetic domains are more likely to have a biological function. (2) Behavioural observations of dances in null fields are difficult to reconcile with astable-domain detector but are clearly predicted by many superparamagnetic detector models. (3) When honey bees are demagnetized, their ability to orient to the earth's field is unaffected. This suggests that the detector either utilizes the super paramagnetic domains or depends on aligned anisotropic stable domains processed without regard to magneticpolarity. (4) Bees that have only superparamagnetic domains are able nevertheless to orient to the earth's magnetic field, a phenomenon which indicates that permanent domains may not be required for detection
Fully electrically read-write device out of a ferromagnetic semiconductor
We report the realization of a read-write device out of the ferromagnetic
semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As as the first step to fundamentally new information
processing paradigm. Writing the magnetic state is achieved by current-induced
switching and read-out of the state is done by the means of the tunneling
anisotropic magneto resistance (TAMR) effect. This one bit demonstrator device
can be used to design a electrically programmable memory and logic device.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Bound hole states in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As environment
A numerical technique is developed to solve the Luttinger-Kohn equation for
impurity states directly in k-space and is applied to calculate bound hole wave
functions in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As host. The rich properties of the band
structure of an arbitrarily strained, ferromagnetic zinc-blende semiconductor
yields various features which have direct impact on the detailed shape of a
valence band hole bound to an active impurity. The role of strain is discussed
on the basis of explicit calculations of bound hole states.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
On the cutting edge: Post-translational modifications in cytokinesis
Cytokinesis represents the final stage in the cell cycle, in which two daughter cells, each with their complement of the duplicated genome, physically separate. At the core of this process sits highly conserved machinery responsible for specifying the plane of division, building a contractile apparatus and ultimately cleaving cells in two. Although the \u27parts list\u27 of contributing proteins has been well described, mechanisms by which these parts are spatially and temporally regulated are only beginning to be understood. With advancements in biochemical and proteomic analyses, recent work has uncovered multiple new roles for post-translational modifications in the regulation of cytokinesis. Here, we review these latest findings and interpret our current understanding of cytokinesis in light of relevant modifications. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd
Johnny\u27s in the Basement/Mixing up His Medicine: Therapeutic Jurisprudence and Clinical Teaching
Clinical legal education is both more exhilarating and more stressful than traditional legal education. It forces students to confront their pre-existing assumptions about the practice of law and the representation of clients (frequently, indigent and marginalized individuals), and it similarly forces them to integrate new doctrine, theory, and practice in a very different way than regular law classes demand.
Therapeutic jurisprudence considers the role of the law as a therapeutic agent, and examines all aspects of the legal system in an effort to determine whether it is operating therapeutically or anti-therapeutically, and suggests that legal decision-makers consider the potential impact that legal judgments may have on individuals\u27 well-being.
Therapeutic jurisprudence has several applications to clinical teaching: It (1) improves the teaching of skills, (2) gives clinical teachers a better understanding of the dynamics of clinical relationships, (3) investigates ethical concerns and the effect on lawyering roles, and (4) invigorates the way teachers and students question accepted legal practice
