Measurements of the reaction pˉpϕη\bar{p}p \to \phi \eta of antiproton annihilation at rest at three hydrogen target densities

The proton-antiproton annihilation at rest into the ϕη\phi\eta final state was measured for three different target densities: liquid hydrogen, gaseous hydrogen at NTP and at a low pressure of 5 mbar. The yield of this reaction in the liquid hydrogen target is smaller than in the low-pressure gas target. The branching ratios of the ϕη\phi\eta channel were calculated on the basis of simultaneous analysis of the three data samples. The branching ratio for annihilation into ϕη\phi\eta from the 3S1^3S_1 protonium state turns out to be about ten times smaller as compared to the one from the 1P1^1P_1 state.Comment: 10 pages, 3 Postscript figures. Nonfactorizable contributions in B decays to charmonium: the case of BKhcB^- \to K^- h_c

Nonleptonic BB to charmonium decays generally show deviations from the factorization predictions. For example, the mode BKχc0B^- \to K^- \chi_{c0} has been experimentally observed with sizeable branching fraction while its factorized amplitude vanishes. We investigate the role of rescattering effects mediated by intermediate charmed meson production in this class of decay modes, and consider BKhcB^- \to K^- h_c with hch_c the JPC=1+J^{PC}=1^{+-} cˉc\bar c c meson. Using an effective lagrangian describing interactions of pairs of heavy-light QqˉQ{\bar q} mesons with a quarkonium state, we relate this mode to the analogous mode with χc0\chi_{c0} in the final state. We find B(BKhc){\cal B}(B^- \to K^- h_c) large enough to be measured at the BB factories, so that this decay mode could be used to study the poorly known hch_c.Comment: RevTex, 16 pages, 2 eps figure

The Extrachromosomal EAST Protein of Drosophila Can Associate with Polytene Chromosomes and Regulate Gene Expression

The EAST protein of Drosophila is a component of an expandable extrachromosomal domain of the nucleus. To better understand its function, we studied the dynamics and localization of GFP-tagged EAST. In live larval salivary glands, EAST-GFP is highly mobile and localizes to the extrachromosomal nucleoplasm. When these cells are permeabilized, EAST-GFP rapidly associated with polytene chromosomes. The affinity to chromatin increases and mobility decreases with decreasing salt concentration. Deleting the C-terminal residues 1535 to 2301 of EAST strongly reduces the affinity to polytene chromosomes. The bulk of EAST-GFP co-localizes with heterochromatin and is absent from transcriptionally active chromosomal regions. The predominantly chromosomal localization of EAST-GFP can be detected in non-detergent treated salivary glands of pupae as they undergo apoptosis, however not in earlier stages of development. Consistent with this chromosomal pattern of localization, genetic evidence indicates a role for EAST in the repression of gene expression, since a lethal east mutation is allelic to the viable mutation suppressor of white-spotted. We propose that EAST acts as an ion sensor that modulates gene expression in response to changing intracellular ion concentrations

Interpretation of Experimental J^PC Exotic Signals

We investigate theoretical interpretations of the 1.4 GeV J^PC exotic resonance reported by the E852 collaboration. It is argued that interpretation in terms of a hybrid meson is untenable. A K-matrix analysis shows that the 1.4 GeV enhancement in the E852 eta pi data can be understood as an interference of a non-resonant Deck-type background and a resonance at 1.6 GeV. A final state rescattering calculation shows that the 1.6 GeV hybrid has a eta pi width which is bounded above by 57 \pm 14 MeV.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, 4 encapsulated postscript figures. Study of the f(0)(1500)/f(2)(1565) production in the exclusive annihilation anti-n.anti-p -> pi+.pi+.pi- in flight

The spin-parity analysis of the (n) over bar p --> pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) exclusive reaction in flight is presented. The main aim is to study the (pi(+)pi(-)) invariant mass spectrum in the region around 1500 MeV. The analysis was performed with a Breit-Wigner parametrization for all the resonant states and, for the scalar sector in the mass region below 1.2 GeV, by means of a K-matrix-like treatment. It clearly shows the need for two states, a scalar one (0(++)) with mass and width (1522+/-25) MeV and (108+/-33) MeV, and a tensorial one (2(++)) with mass (1575 +/-18) MeV and width (119+/-24) MeV, respectively. In addition, the analysis requires the presence of a scalar state at (1280+/-55) MeV, (323+/-13) MeV broad, and of a second vectorial one, in addition to the rho(0)(770) signal, with mass and width (1348+/-33) MeV and (275+/-10) MeV, respectively

The low-energy QCD predictions to be tested by the DIRAC experiment are revised. The experimental method, the setup characteristics and capabilities, along with first experimental results are reported. Preliminary analysis shows good detector performance: alignment error via Λ\Lambda mass measurement mΛ=1115.6MeV/c2m_\Lambda = 1115.6 MeV/c^2 with σ=0.92MeV/c2\sigma = 0.92 MeV/c^2, pπp \pi^- relative momentum resolution σQ2.7MeV/c\sigma_Q \approx 2.7 MeV/c, and evidence for $\pi^

Detection of π+π\pi^+\pi^-atoms with the DIRAC spectrometer at CERN

The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN is to measure with high precision the lifetime of the π+π\pi^+\pi^- atom (A2πA_{2\pi}), which is of order 3×10153\times10^{-15} s, and thus to determine the s-wave ππ\pi\pi-scattering lengths difference a0a2|a_{0}-a_{2}|. A2πA_{2\pi} atoms are detected through the characteristic features of π+π\pi^+\pi^- pairs from the atom break-up (ionization) in the target. We report on a first high statistics atomic data sample obtained from p Ni interactions at 24 GeV/cc proton momentum and present the methods to separate the signal from the background.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 1 tabl
