    The policy of rapprochement with Russia that President Victor Yanukovych and his entourage had been actively promoting in the first months of his presidency has slowed down notably. One of the reasons for this lowered pace is that current talks between Russia and Ukraine concern the spheres in which Kyiv is not ready to make concessions to Russia. Despite numerous top-level meetings, recent months have failed to bring a breakthrough in energy issues of key importance. First of all, no compromise was reached in gas issues where the divergence of interests is particularly large and where Ukraine has adopted a tough stance to negotiate the best conditions possible. Even though some agreements were signed during the October session of the inter-governmental committee presided over by the prime ministers (the agreement on linking the two states’ aircraft production and on the joint construction of a nuclear fuel production plant), these resulted from prior agreements. Economic negotiations will continue in the coming months but the observed deadlock is not likely to be broken any time soon. The results of these talks are likely to reflect the interests of both Russia and Ukraine, as well as the competition among Ukrainian business groups, some of which opt for closer cooperation with their Eastern neighbour. Ukraine’s consent to send oil to Belarus along the Odessa-Brody pipeline shows that the government in Kyiv is ready to engage in projects they consider profitable, even those that run counter to Russian interests. Ukraine’s adoption of this stance may trigger irritation in Moscow and lead to a cooling in bilateral relations

    Mission statements in FT ranked European business schools - a content analysis

    Purpose: The objective of this article is to investigate mission statements of European business schools ranked by Financial Times (FT) ranking team. In particular, the research focuses on such aspects as dynamics of missions’ changes, the keywords used, the impact of mission statement on b-school performance in the ranking process. Design/Methodology/Approach: Mission statements of b-schools ranked in “FT” from the years 2008, 2012, 2015 and 2017 were collected. Next, they were coded by means of 6-items typology, based on typology used in previous research, descriptive statistics, McNemars and Chi-square tests have been used to analyse the data. Mission statement has not significant influence on the performance of schools in “FT” rankings. Findings: Mission statements of top listed schools and below average listed schools don’t differ significantly. The usage of keywords: “research” and “global” surged in most of the schools. Practical Implications: The article offers clear insights into the significance of mission statements of business schools, their changes and strategies of European business schools (e.g. going global, focusing on research). Originality/Value: The research encourages further research to focus on global market of business schools and further dynamic comparison.peer-reviewe

    The purpose of the study was to evaluate the percentage of CD4+/CD8+ peripheral T cells expressing CD62L+ and CD54+ in patients with Graves' disease and to assess if these estimations could be helpful as markers of active ophthalmopathy. The study was carried out in 25 patients with Graves' disease (GD) divided into 3 groups: 1/ 8 patients with active Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) (CAS 3-6, GO complaints pound 1 year), 2/ 9 patients with hyperthyroid GD without symptoms of ophthalmopathy (GDtox) and 3/ 8 patients with euthyroid GD with no GO symptoms (GDeu). The control group consisted of 15 healthy volunteers age and sex matched to groups 1-3. The expression of lymphocyte adhesion molecules was evaluated by using three-color flow cytometry.     Impairment of vascular endothelium plays a key role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases including juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and atherosclerosis. We hypothesized that structural abnormalities of the smallest blood vessels (capillaries) might exist and reflect endothelial dysfunction in children with JIA. Microcirculation was studied, by means of nailfold videocapillaroscopy with computer-associated image analysis, in 43 patients with JIA and compared with 20 healthy children. Moreover, capillaroscopic findings were correlated with the activity of the disease and the levels of serum biomarkers of endothelial injury, namely soluble intercellular adhesion molecule (sICAM) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). We found that in JIA patients capillaries were significantly wider and longer than in healthy controls. Moreover, irregular capillaries and dilated subpapillary venous plexus were found significantly more frequently in JIA in comparison with the control group. Serum levels of sICAM and VEGF were significantly higher in JIA patients with capillary abnormalities than in JIA patients with normal capillaroscopy. Our study indicates that there are structural changes in the microcirculation of patients with JIA and that these changes might reflect endothelial injury. Whether capillaroscopy might have a role in early identification of JIA patients being at higher risk of atherosclerosis requires further studies

    Circulating monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in women with gestational diabetes.

    Monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) has been implicated as a key factor in the recruitment and activation of peripheral blood leukocytes in atherosclerotic lesions and adipose tissue. Elevated levels of circulating MCP-1 have been found in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as with coronary artery disease. In this study we compared serum MCP-1 concentrations between pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and non-pregnant healthy women. The group studied consisted of 62 patients with GDM (mean age 30.1 +/- 5.0 years) at 29.0 +/- 3.5 week of gestation, 64 pregnant women with NGT (mean age 30.0 +/- 4.7 years) at 29.2 +/- 2.9 week of gestation and 34 non-pregnant healthy women (mean age 29.8 +/- 4.7 years). Serum MCP-1 concentration was measured using an enzyme - linked immunosorbent assay. Median MCP-1 concentrations did not differ significantly between women with GDM (median 342.3 [interquartile range 267.9-424.4] pg/ml) and NGT (338.0 [274.7-408.2] pg/ml), but were markedly lower than those found in non-pregnant women (485.2 [409.6-642.4] pg/ml,

    Clusters of Glycemic Response to Oral Glucose Tolerance Tests Explain Multivariate Metabolic and Anthropometric Outcomes of Bariatric Surgery in Obese Patients

    Glycemic responses to bariatric surgery are highly heterogeneous among patients and defining response types remains challenging. Recently developed data-driven clustering methods have uncovered subtle pathophysiologically informative patterns among patients without diabetes. This study aimed to explain responses among patients with and without diabetes to bariatric surgery with clusters of glucose concentration during oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs). We assessed 30 parameters at baseline and at four subsequent follow-up visits over one year on 154 participants in the Bialystok Bariatric Surgery Study. We applied latent trajectory classification to OGTTs and multinomial regression and generalized linear mixed models to explain differential responses among clusters. OGTT trajectories created four clusters representing increasing dysglycemias that were discordant from standard diabetes diagnosis criteria. The baseline OGTT cluster increased the predictive power of regression models by over 31% and aided in correctly predicting more than 83% of diabetes remissions. Principal component analysis showed that the glucose homeostasis response primarily occurred as improved insulin sensitivity concomitant with improved the OGTT cluster. In sum, OGTT clustering explained multiple, correlated responses to metabolic surgery. The OGTT is an intuitive and easy-to-implement index of improvement that stratifies patients into response types, a vital first step in personalizing diabetic care in obese subjects

    RSK1 promotes murine breast cancer growth and metastasis

    Introduction. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), representing over 15% of all breast cancers, has a poorerprognosis than other subtypes. There is no effective targeted treatment available for the TNBC sufferers. Ribosomal S6 kinases (RSKs) have been previously proposed as drug targets for TNBC based on observations that 85% of these tumors express activated RSKs.Materials and methods. Herein we examined an involvement of RSK1 (p90 ribosomal S6 kinase 1) in a regulation of TNBC growth and metastatic spread in an animal model, which closely imitates human disease. Micewere inoculated into mammary fat pad with 4T1 cells or their RSK1-depleted variant. We examined tumorgrowth and formation of pulmonary metastasis. Boyden chamber, wound healing and soft agarose assays wereperformed to evaluate cells invasion, migration and anchorage-independent growth.Results. We found that RSK1 promoted tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. After 35 days all animals inoculatedwith control cells developed tumors while in the group injected with RSK1-negative cells, there were 75%tumor-bearing mice. Average tumor mass was estimated as 1.16 g and 0.37 g for RSK1-positive vs. -negativesamples, respectively (p < 0.0001). Quantification of the macroscopic pulmonary metastases indicated that micewith RSK1-negative tumors developed approximately 85% less metastatic foci on the lung surface (p < 0.001).This has been supported by in vitro data presenting that RSK1 promoted anchorage-independent cell growthand migration. Moreover, RSK1 knock-down corresponded with decreased expression of cell cycle regulatingproteins, i.e. cyclin D3, CDK6 and CDK4.Conclusions. We provide evidence that RSK1 supports tumor growth and metastatic spread in vivo as well asin vitro migration and survival in non-adherent conditions. Further studies of RSK1 involvement in TNBC progression may substantiate our findings, laying the foundations for development of anti-RSK1-based therapeuticstrategies in the management of patients with TNBC
