Adding Value To Under utilised Fish Species

End of project reportTightening fish quotas and supply shortages for conventional species are causing major difficulties for both fishermen and seafood processors. There is a need, therefore, to explore the potential of underutilised fish species both as fillets or portions and as added-value products. The current project at Ashtown Food Research Centre (AFRC) addressed this issue for a number of underutilised species via (a) sous vide processing (with savoury sauces),(b)marinating (salt- and sugar-based marinades) and (c) via a combination of freeze-chilling and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP).A range of physico-chemical and sensory tests was conducted on the products and their shelf-life status was also determined.National Development Plan (NDP

Factors that Affect Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Students’ Efforts toward Self-Actualization at a Private, Religious College: A Phenomenological Study

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) college students to understand the relationship, if any, between sexual orientation and self-actualization at a private, religious college. Four recent graduates and 14 current students volunteered for semi-structured interviews about their academic and extracurricular experiences at a Roman Catholic college in the greater New York City area. They shared their perceptions of campus climate for GLB students, including homophobia and bias among faculty, staff, and students at the college. Interview data, viewed through the framework of Maslow’s theory of self-actualization and Astin’s student involvement theory, identified factors that support GLB self-actualization and others that discourage it. Such factors included students’ family life before and during college, their levels of outness, and their involvement on campus with an LGBT club and other activities. Findings suggest that GLB students perceive growing support from faculty, including those who belong to religious orders, but more resources and more awareness of GLB issues are needed. Further research on GLB experiences with self-actualization is needed. Studies set in different geographic regions, at schools with other religious affiliations, and in non-educational areas of life (such as youth organizations or sports) would be beneficial

Pro-poor sewerage: solids modelling for design optimization.

    Get PDF
More than 2·8 billion people still live without adequate sanitation. ‘Simplified sewerage’ is one possible solution, offering the possibility of an appropriate scale for urban sanitation. Adoption of such systems requires the range of engineering and advocacy tools erstwhile only available in developed countries. The application of small-bore solid transport system models is wholly appropriate for simplified sewerage, but modifications are required to account for the shallow gradients and the likely accumulation of solids due to low water usage. The importance of local water flow depth on drain self-cleansing where large accumulated solids are present has been identified, and the solid movement threshold has been quantified for a range of expected gross accumulated solids. These modifications, together with improved solid deposition predictions, have contributed to the development of a robust model suitable for application to simplified sewerage systems in order to improve efficiency and optimise design. </jats:p
