Multiplicity Fluctuations in Au+Au Collisions at RHIC
The preliminary data of the PHENIX collaboration for the scaled variances of
charged hadron multiplicity fluctuations in Au+Au at GeV are
analyzed within the model of independent sources. We use the HSD transport
model to calculate the participant number fluctuations and the number of
charged hadrons per nucleon participant in different centrality bins. This
combined picture leads to a good agreement with the PHENIX data and suggests
that the measured multiplicity fluctuations result dominantly from participant
number fluctuations. The role of centrality selection and acceptance is

Open and Hidden Charm Production in Heavy Ion Collisions at Ultrarelativistic Energies
We consider the production of the open charm and J/psi mesons in heavy ion
collisions at BNL RHIC. We discuss several recently developed pictures for
J/psi production and argue that a measurement at RHIC energies is crucial for

Particle Freeze-out and Discontinuities in Relativistic Hydrodynamics
Freeze-out of particles in relativistic hydrodynamics is considered across a
3-dimensional space-time hypersurface. The conservation laws for time-like
parts of the freeze-out hypersurface require different values of temperature,
baryonic chemical potential and flow velocity in the fluid and in the final
particle spectra. We analyze this freeze-out discontinuity and its connection
to the shock-wave phenomena in relativistic hydrodynamics.Comment: 6 figure
Surface Partition of Large Fragments
The surface partition of large fragments is derived analytically within a
simple statistical model by the Laplace-Fourier transformation method. In the
limit of small amplitude deformations, a suggested Hills and Dales Model
reproduces the leading term of the famous Fisher result for the surface entropy
with an accuracy of a few percent. The surface partition of finite fragments is

Multiplicity Fluctuations in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions: Dependence on Energy and Atomic Number
Event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations in central C+C, S+S, In+In, and
Pb+Pb as well as p+p collisions at bombarding energies from 10 to 160 AGeV are
studied within the HSD and UrQMD microscopic transport approaches. Our
investigation is directly related to the future experimental program of the
NA61 Collaboration at the SPS for a search of the QCD critical point. The
dependence on energy and atomic mass number of the scaled variances for
negative, positive, and all charged hadrons is presented and compared to the
results of the model of independent sources. Furthermore, the nucleus-nucleus
results from the transport calculations are compared to inelastic proton-proton
collisions for reference. We find a dominant role of the participant number
fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus reactions at finite impact parameter . In
order to reduce the influence of the participant numbers fluctuations on the
charged particle multiplicity fluctuations only the most central events have to
be selected. Accordingly, the samples of the 1% most central nucleus-nucleus
collisions with the largest numbers of the projectile participants are studied.
The results are compared with those for collisions at zero impact parameter. A
strong influence of the centrality selection criteria on the multiplicity
fluctuations is pointed out. Our findings are essential for an optimal choice
of colliding nuclei and bombarding energies for the experimental search of the

Particle Number Fluctuations in Statistical Model with Exact Charge Conservation Laws
Even though the first momenta i.e. the ensemble average quantities in
canonical ensemble (CE) give the grand canonical (GC) results in large
multiplicity limit, the fluctuations involving second moments do not respect
this asymptotic behaviour. Instead, the asymptotics are strikingly different,
giving a new handle in study of statistical particle number fluctuations in
relativistic nuclear reactions. Here we study the analytical large volume
asymptotics to general case of multispecies hadron gas carrying fixed baryon
number, strangeness and electric charge. By means of Monte Carlo simulations we
have also studied the general multiplicity probability distributions taking

Open Charm Enhancement in Pb+Pb Collisions at SPS
The statistical coalescence model for the production of open and hidden charm
is considered within the canonical ensemble formulation. The data for the
J/\psi multiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV are used for the model
prediction of the open charm yield. We find a strong enhancement of the open
charm production, by a factor of about 2--4, over the standard hard-collision
model extrapolation from nucleon-nucleon to nucleus-nucleus collisions. A
possible mechanism of the open charm enhancement in A+A collisions at the SPS

Multiplicity fluctuations in relativistic nuclear collisions
Multiplicity distributions of hadrons produced in central nucleus-nucleus
collisions are studied within the hadron-resonance gas model in the large
volume limit. In the canonical ensemble conservation of three charges (baryon
number, electric charge, and strangeness) is enforced. In addition, in the
micro-canonical ensemble energy conservation is included. An analytical method
is used to account for resonance decays. Multiplicity distributions and scaled
variances for negatively charged hadrons are presented along the chemical
freeze-out line of central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions from SIS to LHC energies.
Predictions obtained within different statistical ensembles are compared with
preliminary NA49 experimental results on central Pb+Pb collisions in the SPS
energy range. The measured fluctuations are significantly narrower than a
Poisson reference distribution, and clearly favor expectations for the
micro-canonical ensemble.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
