Correlation of levels of serum C reactive protein in second trimester with fetomaternal outcome

    Get PDF
Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between levels of second trimester C Reactive protein (CRP) with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Methods: Present study was a prospective analytical study carried out among 359 pregnant women between 14-18 weeks. All were primigravida, who attended antenatal OPD at RGGWCH between January 2019 to June 2020. All subjects fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. Informed written consent was obtained in each case. A detailed history, clinical and ultrasound examination was done to confirm the gestational age. Then blood was collected and sent for serum CRP estimation. Patients were followed upto discharge of the mother and baby and fetomaternal outcome studied. Once the sample size was attained, the correlation between CRP levels and fetomaternal outcome was studied. Results: Increased levels of serum CRP in early second trimester in primigravida were significantly associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes like preterm delivery (p value 0.001), PROM (premature rupture of membranes) (p value 0.01) and low APGAR (p value 0.01).Conclusions: Early detection of higher levels of serum CRP in pregnancy can be used as predictor of inflammation and may help in early intervention, follow up and timely referral of the patients to minimize adverse maternal and fetal complications.

Are advertising policies affirmative in restricting the marketing of foods high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) in India?: Evidence from SWOT Analysis

    Get PDF
The regulatory Indian environment for advertising high fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS) foods and non-alcoholic beverages, on various media was reviewed. Identified national-level policies were categorised as mandatory or self-regulatory based on legal content. For each mandatory regulation, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis was undertaken to determine how existing policies could be strengthened to safeguard children from unhealthy food advertisements. Thirteen policies (nine mandatory; four self-regulatory) relevant to advertising in India were identified. Of the nine mandatory policies, Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022, is the only policy that restricts HFSS food advertisements to children across all media. There are key shortfalls, including limited scope of ‘child-targeted’ advertisements and lack of criteria to define HFSS foods. A robust regulatory framework is needed to protect children from HFSS food marketing, not just what is ‘directed’ at them, with clear evidence-based food classification criteria.Funding source: The work is supported by the UNICEF India Country Office, New Delhi, India

Density inversion in the binary liquid system cyclohexane + aceto nitrile. Effects of doping and simplified models of the phenomena

    No full text
The binary liquid system acetonitrile + cyclohexane has closely matched densities, equal to within 0.2% at 20 °C, a density inversion in the system at ; 32oC\simeq\hspace{2mm} 32^oC and a critical solution temperature off 76oC\simeq\hspace{2mm}76^oC. It is thus an excellent system for simulating buoyancy corrected microgravity in the laboratory. The changes of the density inversion temperature ti caused by doping with water soluble in acetonitrile only and acetic anhydride soluble in both liquids has been studied experimentally dti/dXdt_i/dX is equal to 1.7±0.11.7\hspace{2mm}\pm\hspace{2mm}0.1 mK/ppm weight fraction of water with respect to acetonitrile and is 1.0±0.11.0\hspace{2mm}\pm\hspace{2mm}0.1 mK/ppm weight fraction of acetic anhydride with respect to acetonitrile. Simplified models of the phenomena are presented for each case of doping

Fatal Klebsiella pneumoniae meningitis in a patient with diabetes mellitus and Hansen′s disease

Klebsiella is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes different types of health care-associated infections including pneumonia, bloodstream infections, surgical site infections and meningitis. We report here a case of Klebsiella pneumoniae meningitis in a patient with diabetes mellitus and Hansen′s disease. A middle-aged man with a known case of diabetes mellitus and Hansen′s disease presented with the complaints of blurred vision in the left eye and the patient was found to have cataract. Patient was operated for cataract and Intraocular lens implanted. Patient developed headache and vomiting on the 4 th post-operative day. Lumbar puncture was carried out and gram stain of cerebrospinal fluid showed Gram-negative bacilli in the direct smear and culture yielded a heavy growth of K. pneumoniae. The patient was treated with antimicrobials according to the susceptibility pattern. He initially showed improvement but later on developed altered sensorium and hypotension. Patient succumbed to infection in spite of all medical attention

The binary liquid system acetonitrile + cyclohexane has closely matched densities, equal to within 0.2% at 20 °C, a density inversion in the system at ;\simeq 32 °C and a critical solution temperature off \simeq 76 °C. It is thus an excellent system for simulating buoyancy corrected microgravity in the laboratory. The changes of the density inversion temperature ti caused by doping with water soluble in acetonitrile only and acetic anhydride soluble in both liquids has been studied experimentally dti/dXdt_i/dX is equal to 1.7 ±\pm 0.1 mK/ppm weight fraction of water with respect to acetonitrile and is 1.0 ±\pm 0.1 mK/ppm weight fraction of acetic anhydride with respect to acetonitrile. Simplified models of the phenomena are presented for each case of doping.

Coexistence curve of acetonitrile and cyclohexane liquid system

The paper reports a detailed determination of the coexistence curve for the binary liquid system acetonitrile+cyclohexane, which have very closely matched densities and the data points get affected by gravity only for t=(Tc−T)/ Tc[approximately-equal-to]10−6. About 100 samples were measured over the range 10−6<t<5×10−1. The order parameter exponent is found to be 0.322±0.004 and the value of Delta is nearly 0.50±0.05 as expected theoretically. There is also a definite anomaly in the diameter which is carefully examined with reference to the predictions of the various theories. The data, when expressed in terms of the volume fraction as the composition variable and analyzed in the asymptotic region, give an exponent of 0.9 for the diameter in keeping with the (1−alpha) exponent theoretically predicted, the value of alpha being 0.11 in binary liquids. The extrapolation properties of the Wegner expansion procedure is somewhat inferior to the extrapolation obtained using a renormalization group (RG) crossover expansion. The use of the new variables proposed by Johnston et al. and Vnuk in making the coexistence curve appear symmetric in the new variables is pointed out. In critical wetting phenomena, the situation of a heavier liquid residing on top of lighter liquid is observed. The consequences of the Rayleigh-Taylor mode of instability in the semicritical wetting layer in a binary liquid mixture are investigated. We also report experimental observations in support of our theory, in the critical binary liquid mixture cyclohexane + acetonitrile.
