BCS-BEC crossover in a strongly correlated Fermi gas

    Get PDF
We study the BCS-BEC crossover in the strongly correlated regime of an ultra-cold rotating two component Fermi gas. Strong correlations are shown to generate an additional long-range interaction which results in a modified crossover region compared to the non-rotating situation. The two-particle correlation function reveals a smooth crossover between the s-wave paired fermionic fractional quantum Hall state and the bosonic Laughlin state.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Feshbach resonances in 3He*-4He* mixtures

    Get PDF
We discuss the stability of homonuclear and heteronuclear mixtures of 3He and 4He atoms in the metastable 2^3S_1 state (He*) and predict positions and widths of Feshbach resonances by using the Asymptotic Bound-state Model (ABM). All calculations are performed without fit parameters, using \emph{ab-initio} calculations of molecular potentials. One promising very broad Feshbach resonance (\Delta B=72.9^{+18.3}_{-19.3} mT) is found that allows for tuning of the inter-isotope scattering length.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

The development of an integrated framework in order to address King III’s IT governance principles at a strategic level

    Get PDF
In today’s technologically advanced business environments, Information Technology (IT) has become the center of most businesses’ strategic activities. It is for this reason that the King III report has dedicated a chapter to addressing IT governance principles, holding the board of directors (senior management) responsible for addressing such principles. The King III report does provide broad level guidance, however lack sufficient detail on its interpretation. Although various guidelines in the form of IT control frameworks -models and -standards exist, it remains theoretical in nature and companies tend to implement these guidelines in an ad hoc manner. This ad hoc implementation of controls leads to unnecessary controls being implemented, resulting in an ineffective IT governance system that does not address each key strategic risk area.   The objective of this research is to develop an integrated best practices framework, which will provide guidance to senior management in how to effectively and efficiently address King III’s IT governance principles by taking a business’ unique strategic objectives into account.   A detailed literature review was performed of different control frameworks,-models and standards. These were analysed to identify a list of similar and overlapping control areas. These control areas were thereafter mapped to a list of strategic objectives applicable to most businesses. In doing so, effective and efficient IT governance principles which are understood by senior management, are able to be implemented

Asymptotic Bound-state Model for Feshbach Resonances

    Get PDF
We present an Asymptotic Bound-state Model which can be used to accurately describe all Feshbach resonance positions and widths in a two-body system. With this model we determine the coupled bound states of a particular two-body system. The model is based on analytic properties of the two-body Hamiltonian, and on asymptotic properties of uncoupled bound states in the interaction potentials. In its most simple version, the only necessary parameters are the least bound state energies and actual potentials are not used. The complexity of the model can be stepwise increased by introducing threshold effects, multiple vibrational levels and additional potential parameters. The model is extensively tested on the 6Li-40K system and additional calculations on the 40K-87Rb system are presented.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

Development of plasma-sprayed molybdenum carbide-based anode layers with various metal oxides for SOFC.

Air plasma-sprayed (APS) coatings provide an ability to deposit a range of novel fuel cell materials at competitive costs. This work develops three separate types of composite anodes (Mo-Mo2C/Al2O3, Mo-Mo2C/ZrO2, Mo-Mo2C/TiO2) using a combination of APS process parameters on Hastelloy®X for application in intermediate temperature proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells. Commercially available carbide of molybdenum powder catalyst (Mo-Mo2C) and three metal oxides (Al2O3, ZrO2, TiO2) was used to prepare three separate composite feedstock powders to fabricate three different anodes. Each of the modified composition anode feedstock powders included a stoichiometric weight ratio of 0.8:0.2. The coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, nanoindentation, and conductivity. We report herein that three optimized anode layers of thicknesses between 200 and 300µm and porosity as high as 20% for Mo-Mo2C/Al2O3 (250-µm thick) and Mo-Mo2C/TiO2 (300µm thick) and 17% for Mo-Mo2C/ZrO2 (220-µm thick), controllable by a selection of the APS process parameters with no addition of sacrificial pore-forming material. The nanohardness results indicate the upper layers of the coatings have higher values than the subsurface layers in coatings with some effect of the deposition on the substrate. Mo-Mo2C/ZrO2 shows high electrical conductivity

Feshbach spectroscopy and scattering properties of ultracold Li+Na mixtures

    Get PDF
We have observed 26 interspecies Feshbach resonances at fields up to 2050 G in ultracold 6^6Li+23^{23}Na mixtures for different spin-state combinations. Applying the asymptotic bound-state model to assign the resonances, we have found that most resonances have d-wave character. This analysis serves as guidance for a coupled-channel calculation, which uses modified interaction potentials to describe the positions of the Feshbach resonances well within the experimental uncertainty and to calculate their widths. The scattering length derived from the improved interaction potentials is experimentally confirmed and deviates from previously reported values in sign and magnitude. We give prospects for 7^7Li+23^{23}Na and predict broad Feshbach resonances suitable for tuning.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, version as published in PR

D.D.T. for the protection of sheep against blowfly strike

    Get PDF
Sheep treated at Onderstepoort with emulsions containing 5 per cent. and 2•5 per cent. para para isomer of D.D.T. on selected sites on the fleece, and subsequently tested on these treated sites by artificially induced strikes with first-stage larvae of blowflies, were protected for a period of approximately three months. A field experiment in the Graaff-Reinet district of the Karroo is described in which sheep were sprayed in the breech region with emulsions containing 6 per cent., 5 per cent. and 2•5 per cent. of the p.p. isomer of D.D.T. A considerable degree of protection was afforded which was more apparent on sheep pastured on Karroo veld than on those running in lucerne lands. The conclusion arrived at is that the treatment of sheep, according to the method described, with a D.D.T. emulsion containing 5 per cent. of the p.p. isomer will afford a degree of protection sufficient to reduce blowfly strike to a minimum during the periods of greatest activity. Treatment is best applied shortly after the first summer rains about September and again after the late summer rains in February. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 300dpi.
