Kinetic energy functional for Fermi vapors in spherical harmonic confinement
Two equations are constructed which reflect, for fermions moving
independently in a spherical harmonic potential, a differential virial theorem
and a relation between the turning points of kinetic energy and particle
densities. These equations are used to derive a differential equation for the
particle density and a non-local kinetic energy functional.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Metastable states of a ferromagnet on random thin graphs
We calculate the mean number of metastable states of an Ising ferromagnet on
random thin graphs of fixed connectivity c. We find, as for mean field spin
glasses that this mean increases exponentially with the number of sites, and is
the same as that calculated for the +/- J spin glass on the same graphs. An
annealed calculation of the number <N_{MS}(E)> of metastable states of energy E
is carried out. For small c, an analytic result is obtained. The result is
compared with the one obtained for spin glasses in order to discuss the role
played by loops on thin graphs and hence the effect of real frustration on the

Creative User-Centered Visualization Design for Energy Analysts and Modelers
We enhance a user-centered design process with techniques that deliberately promote creativity to identify opportunities for the visualization of data generated by a major energy supplier. Visualization prototypes developed in this way prove effective in a situation whereby data sets are largely unknown and requirements open â enabling successful exploration of possibilities for visualization in Smart Home data analysis. The process gives rise to novel designs and design metaphors including data sculpting. It suggests: that the deliberate use of creativity techniques with data stakeholders is likely to contribute to successful, novel and effective solutions; that being explicit about creativity may contribute to designers developing creative solutions; that using creativity techniques early in the design process may result in a creative approach persisting throughout the process. The work constitutes the first systematic visualization design for a data rich source that will be increasingly important to energy suppliers and consumers as Smart Meter technology is widely deployed. It is novel in explicitly employing creativity techniques at the requirements stage of visualization design and development, paving the way for further use and study of creativity methods in visualization design

Applying baled litter from northwest Arkansas shipped by truck with backhauls, supplemented with chemical fertilizers provided the most cost-efficient method to supply nutrients to crops in eastern Arkansas, according to a GAMS optimization. Imaging of genomic loci in Trypanosoma brucei using an optimised LacO-LacI system
Visualisation of genomic loci by microscopy is essential for understanding nuclear organisation, particularly at the single cell level. One powerful technique for studying the positioning of genomic loci is through the Lac Operator-Lac Repressor (LacO-LacI) system, in which LacO repeats introduced into a specific genomic locus can be visualised through expression of a LacI-protein fused to a fluorescent tag. First utilised in Trypanosoma brucei over 20 years ago, we have now optimised this system with short, stabilised LacO repeats of less than 2Â kb paired with a constitutively expressed mNeongreen::LacI fusion protein to facilitate visualisation of genomic loci. We demonstrate the compatibility of this system with super-resolution microscopy and propose its suitability for multiplexing with inducible RNAi or protein over expression which will allow analysis of nuclear organisation after perturbation of gene expression
Branching ratios for the beta decay of 21Na
We have measured the beta-decay branching ratio for the transition from 21Na
to the first excited state of 21Ne. A recently published test of the standard
model, which was based on a measurement of the beta-nu correlation in the decay
of 21Na, depended on this branching ratio. However, until now only relatively
imprecise (and, in some cases, contradictory) values existed for it. Our new
result, 4.74(4)%, reduces but does not remove the reported discrepancy with the

Peak power output in the bench pull is maximised after 4 weeks of specific power training
Maximal power production has been shown to be a differentiating factor between playing levels in many sports and is thus a focus of many strength and conditioning programmes. We sought to evaluate the duration for which a strategy of training with the optimal load (that maximises power output) will be effective in producing improvements in power output in the bench pull. The optimal load that produced the maximum power output in the bench pull was determined for twenty-one male university athletes who were randomly assigned to a group that trained with their optimal load or a load 10% of their one repetition maximum below the optimal load. Both groups completed two sessions per week for 4 weeks, after which their power output capabilities were reassessed. They then trained for a further 3 weeks with a load that was modified to reflect changes in their optimal load. The cohort as a whole had improved their peak power output by 4.6% (p = 0.002, d = 0.290) after 4 weeks of training, but experienced no further increase after another 3 weeks of training. There were no significant differences in the response to training between the two groups. This study suggests that improvements in power output can be realised within a few weeks when training with the optimal load, but training in such a way for a longer duration may be ineffective. Strength and conditioning coaches should consider periodizing power training to maximise gains in power output capabilities

A Dynamical Fossil in the Ursa Minor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
The nearby Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal (UMi dSph) is one of the most dark
matter dominated galaxies known, with a central mass to light ratio roughly
equal to 70. Somewhat anomalously, it appears to contain morphological
substructure in the form of a second peak in the stellar number density. It is
often argued that this substructure must be transient because it could not
survive for the > 10 Gyr age of the system, given the crossing time implied by
UMi's 8.8 km/s internal velocity dispersion. In this paper, however, we present
evidence that the substructure has a cold kinematical signature, and argue that
UMi's clumpiness could indeed be a primordial artefact. Using numerical
simulations, we demonstrate that substructure is incompatible with the cusped
dark matter haloes predicted by the prevailing Cold Dark Matter (CDM) paradigm,
but is consistent with an unbound stellar cluster sloshing back and forth
within the nearly harmonic potential of a cored dark matter halo. Thus CDM
appears to disagree with observation at the least massive, most dark matter

Globalising assessment: an ethnography of literacy assessment, camels and fast food in the Mongolian Gobi
What happens when standardised literacy assessments travel globally? The paper presents an ethnographic account of adult literacy assessment events in rural Mongolia. It examines the dynamics of literacy assessment in terms of the movement and re-contextualisation of test items as they travel globally and are received locally by Mongolian respondents. The analysis of literacy assessment events is informed by Goodwinâs âparticipation frameworkâ on language as embodied and situated interactive phenomena and by Actor Network Theory. Actor Network Theory (ANT) is applied to examine literacy assessment events as processes of translation shaped by an âassemblageâ of human and non-human actors (including the assessment texts)
