    The Dynamical Implications of Multiple Stellar Formation Events in Galactic Globular Clusters

    Various galactic globular clusters display abundance anomalies that affect the morphology of their colour-magnitude diagrams. In this paper we consider the possibility of helium enhancement in the anomalous horizontal branch of NGC 2808. We examine the dynamics of a self-enrichment scenario in which an initial generation of stars with a top-heavy initial mass function enriches the interstellar medium with helium via the low-velocity ejecta of its asymptotic giant branch stars. This enriched medium then produces a second generation of stars which are themselves helium-enriched. We use a direct N-body approach to perform five simulations and conclude that such two-generation clusters are both possible and would not differ significantly from their single-generation counterparts on the basis of dynamics. We find, however, that the stellar populations of such clusters would differ from single-generation clusters with a standard initial mass function and in particular would be enhanced in white dwarf stars.     Isolation, characterization, and genome sequence of the first representative of a novel class within the Chloroflexi that is abundant in some U.S. Great Basin hot springs and may play important roles in N and C cycling

    A thermophilic, facultatively microaerophilic, heterotrophic bacterium, designated strain JAD2, was isolated from sediments of Great Boiling Spring (GBS), an ~80oC, circumneutral hot spring in the Great Basin GB). The strain grew anaerobically on yeast extract or peptone with an optimal growth temperature of 70-75oC. Growth was stimulated by addition of 0.01 atm O2 to the culture vessel headspace, but was inhibited by higher concentrations (0.2 atm). Cells of JAD2 formed non-motile filaments ranging from 10 to \u3e300 μm in length, which typically decreased in length during stationary phase. 16S rRNA gene-targeted pyrotag sequencing and clone library data suggest that close relatives of this isolate are prominent members of the sediment communities in GBS. Shotgun sequencing of the JAD2 genome produced an assembly consisting of ~3.2 Mbp with an average G+C content of 67.3%. Phylogenies inferred from the 16S rRNA gene and predicted amino acid sequences of various conserved proteins indicate that JAD2 is the first cultivated representative of the GAL35 group, a new class within the Chloroflexi. Predicted genes in the draft genome encoding a putative carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (coxMSL), nitrite reductase (nrfHA) and nitrous oxide reductase (nosZ) suggest that this isolate may play important roles in N and C cycling in GBS sediments

    An Idealized Pulsar Magnetosphere: the Relativistic Force-Free Approximation

    The non-dissipative relativistic force-free condition should be a good approximation to describe the electromagnetic field in much of the pulsar magnetosphere, but we may plausibly expect it to break down in singular domains. Self-consistent magnetospheric solutions are found with field lines closing both at and within the light-cylinder. In general, the detailed properties of the solutions may be affected critically by the physics determining the appropriate choice of equatorial boundary condition beyond the light-cylinder.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figure

    Climate, landscape, habitat, and woodland management associations with hazel dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius population status

    Although strictly protected, populations of the hazel dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius in the UK declined by 72% from 1993 to 2014. Using National Dormouse Monitoring Programme data from 300 sites throughout England and Wales, we investigated variation in hazel dormouse population status (expressed as Indices of Abundance, Breeding, and population Trend) in relation to climate, landscape, habitat, and woodland management. Dormice were more abundant and produced more litters on sites with warmer, sunnier springs, summers, and autumns. Dormouse abundance was also higher on sites with consistently cold local climate in winter. Habitat connectivity, woodland species composition, and active site management were all correlated with greater dormouse abundance and breeding. Abundances were also higher on sites with successional habitats, whereas the abundance of early successional bramble Rubus fruticosus habitat, woodland area, and landscape connectivity were important for population stability. Diversity in the structure of woodlands in Europe has decreased over the last 100 years, and the habitats we found to be associated with more favourable dormouse status have also been in decline. The conservation status of the hazel dormouse, and that of woodland birds and butterflies, may benefit from reinstatement or increased frequency of management practices, such as coppicing and glade management, that maintain successional and diverse habitats within woodland

    In situ collection and preservation of intact Microcystis colonies to assess population diversity and microcystin quotas

    Understanding of colony specific properties of cyanobacteria in the natural environment has been challenging because sampling methods disaggregate colonies and there are often delays before they can be isolated and preserved. Microcystis is a ubiquitous cyanobacteria that forms large colonies in situ and often produces microcystins, a potent hepatotoxin. In the present study a new cryo-sampling technique was used to collect intact Microcystis colonies in situ by embedding them in a sheet of ice. Thirty-two of these Microcystis colonies were investigated with image analysis, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, quantitative polymerase chain reaction and high-throughput sequencing to assess their volume, microcystin quota and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) genotype diversity. Microcystin quotas were positively correlated to colony volume (R² = 0.32; p = 0.004). Individual colonies had low Microcystis ITS genotype diversity and one ITS operational taxonomic unit predominated in all samples. This study demonstrates the utility of the cryo-sampling method to enhance the understanding of colony-specific properties of cyanobacteria with higher precision than previously possible
