One-loop adjoint masses for branes at non-supersymmetric angles
This proceeding is based on arXiv:1105.0591 [hep-th] where we consider
breaking of supersymmetry in intersecting D-brane configurations by slight
deviation of the angles from their supersymmetric values. We compute the masses
generated by radiative corrections for the adjoint scalars on the brane
world-volumes. In the open string channel, the string two-point function
receives contributions only from the infrared limits of N~4 and N~2
supersymmetric configurations, via messengers and their Kaluza-Klein
excitations, and leads at leading order to tachyonic directions.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. Contribution to the proceedings of the Corfu

Dark Matter and Dark Forces from a supersymmetric hidden sector
We show that supersymmetric "Dark Force" models with gravity mediation are
viable. To this end, we analyse a simple string-inspired supersymmetric hidden
sector model that interacts with the visible sector via kinetic mixing of a
light Abelian gauge boson with the hypercharge. We include all induced
interactions with the visible sector such as neutralino mass mixing and the
Higgs portal term. We perform a detailed parameter space scan comparing the
produced dark matter relic abundance and direct detection cross sections to
current experiments.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures comprising 21 plots. 4Mb total size. v2: figures

A Three-dimensional Printed Low-cost Anterior Shoulder Dislocation Model for Ultrasound-guided Injection Training.
Anterior shoulder dislocations are the most common, large joint dislocations that present to the emergency department (ED). Numerous studies support the use of intraarticular local anesthetic injections for the safe, effective, and time-saving reduction of these dislocations. Simulation training is an alternative and effective method for training compared to bedside learning. There are no commercially available ultrasound-compatible shoulder dislocation models. We utilized a three-dimensional (3D) printer to print a model that allows the visualization of the ultrasound anatomy (sonoanatomy) of an anterior shoulder dislocation. We utilized an open-source file of a shoulder, available from embodi3D® (Bellevue, WA, US). After approximating the relative orientation of the humerus to the glenoid fossa in an anterior dislocation, the humerus and scapula model was printed with an Ultimaker-2 Extended+ 3D® (Ultimaker, Cambridge, MA, US) printer using polylactic acid filaments. A 3D model of the external shoulder anatomy of a live human model was then created using Structure Sensor®(Occipital, San Francisco, CA, US), a 3D scanner. We aligned the printed dislocation model of the humerus and scapula within the resultant external shoulder mold. A pourable ballistics gel solution was used to create the final shoulder phantom. The use of simulation in medicine is widespread and growing, given the restrictions on work hours and a renewed focus on patient safety. The adage of see one, do one, teach one is being replaced by deliberate practice. Simulation allows such training to occur in a safe teaching environment. The ballistic gel and polylactic acid structure effectively reproduced the sonoanatomy of an anterior shoulder dislocation. The 3D printed model was effective for practicing an in-plane ultrasound-guided intraarticular joint injection. 3D printing is effective in producing a low-cost, ultrasound-capable model simulating an anterior shoulder dislocation. Future research will determine whether provider confidence and the use of intraarticular anesthesia for the management of shoulder dislocations will improve after utilizing this model
Inter-Intra Molecular Dynamics as an Iterated Function System
The dynamics of units (molecules) with slowly relaxing internal states is
studied as an iterated function system (IFS) for the situation common in e.g.
biological systems where these units are subjected to frequent collisional
interactions. It is found that an increase in the collision frequency leads to
successive discrete states that can be analyzed as partial steps to form a
Cantor set. By considering the interactions among the units, a self-consistent
IFS is derived, which leads to the formation and stabilization of multiple such
discrete states. The relevance of the results to dynamical multiple states in
biomolecules in crowded conditions is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. submitted to Europhysics Letter
Intersecting Brane Worlds at One Loop
We develop techniques for one-loop diagrams on intersecting branes. The
one-loop propagator of chiral intersection states on D6 branes is calculated
exactly and its finiteness is shown to be guaranteed by RR tadpole
cancellation. The result is used to demonstrate the expected softening of power
law running of Yukawa couplings at the string scale. We also develop methods to
calculate arbitrary N-point functions at one-loop, including those without
gauge bosons in the loop. These techniques are also applicable to heterotic
orbifold models.Comment: 35 pages, 3 figures; added reference, corrected typos, JHEP styl
Euler and Potential Experiment/CFD Correlations for a Transport and Two Delta-Wing Configurations
A selection of successes and failures of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is discussed. Experiment/CFD correlations involving full potential and Euler computations of the aerodynamic characteristics of four commercial transport wings and two low aspect ratio, delta wing configurations are shown. The examples consist of experiment/CFD comparisons for aerodynamic forces, moments, and pressures. Navier-Stokes equations are not considered
ROCs in Eyewitness Identification: Instructions vs. Confidence Ratings
From the perspective of signal-detection theory, different lineup instructions may induce different levels of response bias (Clark, 2005). If so, then collecting correct and false identification rates across different instructional conditions will trace out the ROC – the same ROC that, theoretically, could also be traced out from a single instruction condition in which each eyewitness decision is accompanied by a confidence rating. We tested whether the two approaches do in fact yield the same ROC. Participants were assigned to a confidence rating condition or to an instructional biasing condition (liberal, neutral, unbiased, or conservative). After watching a video of a mock crime, participants were presented with instructions followed by a 6-person simultaneous photo lineup. The ROCs from both methods were similar, but they were not exactly the same. These findings have potentially important policy implications for how the legal system should go about controlling eyewitness response bias
Supersymmetry in the shadow of photini
Additional neutral gauge fermions -- "photini" -- arise in string
compactifications as superpartners of U(1) gauge fields. Unlike their vector
counterparts, the photini can acquire weak-scale masses from soft SUSY breaking
and lead to observable signatures at the LHC through mass mixing with the bino.
In this work we investigate the collider consequences of adding photini to the
neutralino sector of the MSSM. Relatively large mixing of one or more photini
with the bino can lead to prompt decays of the lightest ordinary supersymmetric
particle; these extra cascades transfer most of the energy of SUSY decay chains
into Standard Model particles, diminishing the power of missing energy as an
experimental handle for signal discrimination. We demonstrate that the missing
energy in SUSY events with photini is reduced dramatically for supersymmetric
spectra with MSSM neutralinos near the weak scale, and study the effects on
limits set by the leading hadronic SUSY searches at ATLAS and CMS. We find that
in the presence of even one light photino the limits on squark masses from
hadronic searches can be reduced by 400 GeV, with comparable (though more
modest) reduction of gluino mass limits. We also consider potential discovery
channels such as dilepton and multilepton searches, which remain sensitive to
SUSY spectra with photini and can provide an unexpected route to the discovery
of supersymmetry. Although presented in the context of photini, our results
apply in general to theories in which additional light neutral fermions mix
with MSSM gauginos.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, references adde
Positronium Portal into Hidden Sector: A new Experiment to Search for Mirror Dark Matter
The understanding of the origin of dark matter has great importance for
cosmology and particle physics. Several interesting extensions of the standard
model dealing with solution of this problem motivate the concept of hidden
sectors consisting of SU(3)xSU(2)_LxU(1)_Y singlet fields. Among these models,
the mirror matter model is certainly one of the most interesting. The model
explains the origin of parity violation in weak interactions, it could also
explain the baryon asymmetry of the Universe and provide a natural ground for
the explanation of dark matter. The mirror matter could have a portal to our
world through photon-mirror photon mixing (epsilon). This mixing would lead to
orthopositronium (o-Ps) to mirror orthopositronium oscillations, the
experimental signature of which is the apparently invisible decay of o-Ps. In
this paper, we describe an experiment to search for the decay o-Ps -> invisible
in vacuum by using a pulsed slow positron beam and a massive 4pi BGO crystal
calorimeter. The developed high efficiency positron tagging system, the low
calorimeter energy threshold and high hermiticity allow the expected
sensitivity in mixing strength to be epsilon about 10^-9, which is more than
one order of magnitude below the current Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit and in
a region of parameter space of great theoretical and phenomenological interest.
The vacuum experiment with such sensitivity is particularly timely in light of
the recent DAMA/LIBRA observations of the annual modulation signal consistent
with a mirror type dark matter interpretation.Comment: 40 pages, 29 Figures 2 Tables v2: Ref. added, Fig. 29 and some text

The kinetic dark-mixing in the light of CoGENT and XENON100
Several string or GUT constructions motivate the existence of a dark U(1)_D
gauge boson which interacts with the Standard Model only through its kinetic
mixing. We compute the dark matter abundance in such scenario and the
constraints in the light of the recent data from CoGENT, CDMSII and XENON100.
We show in particular that a region with relatively light WIMPS, M_{Z_D}< 40
GeV and a kinetic mixing 10^-4 < delta < 10^-3 is not yet excluded by the last
experimental data and seems to give promising signals in a near future. We also
compute the value of the kinetic mixing needed to explain the
DAMA/CoGENT/CRESST excesses and find that for M_{Z_D}< 30 GeV, delta ~ 10^-3 is
sufficient to fit with the data.Comment: 6 pages, 5figure
