    Satisfaction among patients attending oncology clinic in a tertiary hospital in South West, Nigeria

    Objective: This study determined patients' satisfaction with health care received at the oncology clinic in a tertiary hospital in Lagos, South West of Nigeria.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among patients attending the oncology clinic in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos. A total of 143 patients were recruited using a systematic random sampling and interviewer administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20). Test of significance was performed using a 95% confidence interval and the level of significant set at p = 0.05.Results: More than half 123 (86.1%) reported that they got the kind of service they wanted, 125 (87.5%) reported almost all their needs had been met. Majority (92.3%) of the respondents were satisfied with the level of care received while 2.8% were indifferent and 7 (5%) were dissatisfied. The level of satisfaction was statistically significantly associated with age, marital status, level of education and average monthly income (p<0.05).Conclusion: Majority of patients were satisfied with the health care services at the oncology clinic.     Whistler mode startup in the Michigan Mirror Machine

    Results of investigations of whistler mode ECRH plasma startup in the Michigan Mirror Machine are presented. Electron‐velocity‐distribution and plasma‐spatial‐distribution time evolution are characterized by measurements from axially and radially moveable Langmuir probes, an endloss current detector, an electron cyclotron emission radiometer, a foil‐filtered X‐ray detector, and a diamagnetic loop at the mirror midplane. Measurements of the buildup of both electron density and perpendicular pressure (nkT⟂) are compared to predictions from various numerical models.     Latent class analysis variable selection

    We propose a method for selecting variables in latent class analysis, which is the most common model-based clustering method for discrete data. The method assesses a variable's usefulness for clustering by comparing two models, given the clustering variables already selected. In one model the variable contributes information about cluster allocation beyond that contained in the already selected variables, and in the other model it does not. A headlong search algorithm is used to explore the model space and select clustering variables. In simulated datasets we found that the method selected the correct clustering variables, and also led to improvements in classification performance and in accuracy of the choice of the number of classes. In two real datasets, our method discovered the same group structure with fewer variables. In a dataset from the International HapMap Project consisting of 639 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 210 members of different groups, our method discovered the same group structure with a much smaller number of SNP

    Exact Cover with light

    We suggest a new optical solution for solving the YES/NO version of the Exact Cover problem by using the massive parallelism of light. The idea is to build an optical device which can generate all possible solutions of the problem and then to pick the correct one. In our case the device has a graph-like representation and the light is traversing it by following the routes given by the connections between nodes. The nodes are connected by arcs in a special way which lets us to generate all possible covers (exact or not) of the given set. For selecting the correct solution we assign to each item, from the set to be covered, a special integer number. These numbers will actually represent delays induced to light when it passes through arcs. The solution is represented as a subray arriving at a certain moment in the destination node.     Weight suppression and weight elevation are associated with eating disorder symptomatology in women age 50 and older: Results of the gender and body image study

    Objective: Weight suppression (WS), the difference between highest past non-pregnancy weight and current weight, predicts negative outcomes in eating disorders, but the impact of WS and related weight constructs are understudied in nonclinical, midlife populations. We examined WS (current weight < highest weight) and weight elevation (WE), the opposite of WS (current weight > lowest weight) and their associations with eating psychopathology in women aged 50+. Method: Participants were a community-based sample (N = 1,776, M age = 59) who completed demographic and eating psychopathology questions via online survey. WS, WE, and WS × WE were tested as predictors of outcome variables; BMI and medical conditions that affect weight were controlled for. Results: Individuals that were higher on WS and WE were most likely to engage in current weight loss attempts, dieting in the past 5 years, and extreme lifetime restriction. Individuals with higher WS were more likely to experience binge eating, greater frequency of weight checking, overvaluation of shape and weight, and lifetime fasting. Individuals with higher WE were more likely to report negative life impacts of eating and dieting. Higher WS and WE each predicted higher levels of skipping meals over the lifetime. Discussion: This novel study investigated WS in midlife women and introduced a new conceptualization of weight change (WE) that may be more relevant for aging populations given that women tend to gain weight with age. The findings implicate the utility of investigating both WS and WE as factors associated with eating psychopathology in midlife women

    On the formation of a Hawking-radiation photosphere around microscopic black holes

    We show that once a black hole surpasses some critical temperature TcritT_{crit}, the emitted Hawking radiation interacts with itself and forms a nearly thermal photosphere. Using QED, we show that the dominant interactions are bremsstrahlung and electron-photon pair production, and we estimate Tcrit∌me/α5/2T_{crit} \sim m_{e}/\alpha^{5/2}, which when calculated more precisely is found to be Tcrit≈T_{crit} \approx 45 GeV. The formation of the photosphere is purely a particle physics effect, and not a general relativistic effect, since the the photosphere forms roughly α−4\alpha^{-4} Schwarzschild radii away from the black hole. The temperature TT of the photosphere decreases with distance from the black hole, and the outer surface is determined by the constraint T∌meT\sim m_{e} (for the QED case), since this is the point at which electrons and positrons annihilate, and the remaining photons free stream to infinity. Observational consequences are discussed, and it is found that, although the QED photosphere will not affect the Page-Hawking limits on primordial black holes, which is most important for 100MeV black holes, the inclusion of QCD interactions may significantly effect this limit, since for QCD we estimate Tcrit∌ΛQCDT_{crit}\sim \Lambda_{QCD}. The photosphere greatly reduces possibility of observing individual black holes with temperatures greater than TcritT_{crit}, since the high energy particles emitted from the black hole are processed through the photosphere to a lower energy, where the gamma ray background is much higher. The temperature of the plasma in the photosphere can be extremely high, and this offers interesting possibilities for processes such as symmetry restoration.Comment: Latex, 16 pages, 3 postscript figures, submitted to PRD.     Sweet taste preference in binge-eating disorder: A preliminary investigation

    Research suggests that individuals with high liking for sweets are at increased risk for binge eating, which has been minimally investigated in individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED). Forty-one adults (85% female, 83% white) with binge eating concerns completed a sweet taste test and measures of eating disorder behaviors and food cravings. A subset of participants with BED completed an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT; N = 21) and a 24-hour dietary recall (N = 26). Regression models were used to compare highest sweet preferers (HSP [N = 18]) to other sweet preferers (OSP [N = 23]) and were used to assess associations between sweet taste preference and outcome variables. Effect sizes (ηp2) for differences between HSP and OSP ranged from small (≀ 0.01) to large (≄ 0.24); group differences were statistically nonsignificant except for 24-hour caloric intake (ηp2 = 0.16, p = 0.04), protein intake (ηp2 = 0.16, p = 0.04), and insulin sensitivity index (ηp2 = 0.24, p = 0.04), which were higher in HSP, and postprandial insulin, which was smaller in HSP (ηp2 = 0.27, p = 0.03). Continuous analyses replicated postprandial insulin response. Compared with OSP, HSP reported numerically higher binge-eating frequency (ηp2 = 0.04), over-eating frequency (ηp2 = 0.06), and carbohydrate intake (ηp2 = 0.14), and they exhibited numerically smaller postprandial glucose AUC (ηp2 = 0.16).     The structure of oppositionality: Response disposition and situational aspects

    Background: The Amsterdam Scale of Oppositionality (ASO) is a recently developed self-report instrument to measure the full range of oppositionality. It was used to test the assumption that oppositionality can best be conceptualized as a combination of emotions and behaviors varying across contexts, i.e., with parents, peers and authority figures. Method: The sample consisted of 560 boys and 598 girls, aged 8 to 12 years. The thirty items of the ASO, grouped in item parcels, were analyzed using confirmatory factor analyses. Results: Results confirmed the main hypothesis. The best fitting models contained strongly related emotional and behavioral factors and three mutually related situational factors. Oppositionality appeared to be to a large extent situation-specific. Girls are more affected by the situation than boys and show less oppositionality only outside the family context. Conclusions: Results are discussed with respect to the concept of oppositionality, varying expectations for interpersonal consequences, and implications for clinical assessment and studies of inter-informant reliability

    A pilgrimage to gravity on GPUs

    In this short review we present the developments over the last 5 decades that have led to the use of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for astrophysical simulations. Since the introduction of NVIDIA's Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) in 2007 the GPU has become a valuable tool for N-body simulations and is so popular these days that almost all papers about high precision N-body simulations use methods that are accelerated by GPUs.
