[Review of] Donald M. Taylor and Fathali M. Moghaddam. Theories of Intergroup Relations: International Social Psychological Perspectives
This ambitious book comes at a time when the resurgence of intergroup conflict sounds a despairing note to those of us who have spent more years than we care to count struggling for a united front against an oppressive ruling class. To keep heart we need to periodically focus on the progress that has been made and, in Mao\u27s words, review our accomplishments and transgressions in order to make the past serve the present. For those of us working in the academic enterprise, this means that the tools of our trade, our theories and our methods, must be criticized and updated. We must be very aware of how we got to where we are, why we have the theories we have, and why we use the methods we use
[Review of] Laura Uba. Asian Americans: Personality Patterns, Identity, and Mental Health
When looking at issues of ethnicity and mental health we are constantly reminded that there is, at present, no unified paradigm to guide either the practitioner or the research scholar. What we do know is that the human organism is a socially constructed being. We also know that there are species-specific human needs that play out in the formation of mental well being; there does exist a common denominator, if you will, of optimum conditions and relational situations that underly all human development. Mental health is an arena where the universality of human needs meets the specificity or relativity of cultural ways and experiences. Hence, mental health becomes an arena in which the organic realities of social structures like racism, sexism, etc., reveal themselves. Unfortunately, too many prefer to operate as if their practice and services did not in fact interface with the realities of onerous and destructive social structures (ie., ignoring racism and sexism and enforced poverty and all the other biases that drive the American way is still the preferred denial system of far too many individuals who create and administer mental health services). In Asian Americans, Laura Uba gives us a masterful overview of phsychological [psychological] research on Asian Americans and dispells [dispels] any notion that contemporary mental health theory and practice has come anywhere near addressing the needs of this particular population. Her work is all the more powerful because she does not lecture, she presents. And her presentation carries impact because of her comprehensive approach to the literature and her clear and authoratative [authoritative] style of writing
Analisis Beban Kerja Karyawan produksi di UD. Murni Jaya Menggunakan Metode Nasa-TLX dan Work Sampling
UD Murni Jaya is a manufacturing company engaged in the production of concrete buis. This study aims to analyze the
workload of production employees at UD Murni Jaya and
determine the optimal number of employees to complete their
work. This study uses a method of measuring physical workload (work sampling) and mental workload NASA - Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). According to the calculation of the standard time as seen from the physical workload of production employees amounting to 105.28 minutes or 1.75 hours. From the work sampling analysis, the average standard time used to complete the production activities of 1 concrete bus/employee is 105.28 minutes or 1.75 hours so that the standard time is still considered normal. The calculation results of NASA-TLX show that the mental workload of employee 1 is 84.7%, employee 2 is 83.3%, employee 3 is 84.7% and employee 4 is 82.7. From the analysis, the Nasa-TLX 4 employee score is 83.83%. Proposed improvements to optimize the workload of 4 production employees, namely adding 1 employee to 5 employees with an average workload of 67.08% so that the workload of employees is still in the medium category. The calculation of the correlation coefficient is used to determine therelationship between standard time and mental load which is expressed by the variables x and y, which is equal to 1.112, it is stated that the perfect correlation
Effect of the use of a video tutorial in addition to simulation in learning the maneuvers for shoulder dystocia
The development of video tutorials is flourishing and may make it possible to maintain knowledge learned during instruction with simulation. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of adding a video tutorial to a lecture and simulation for learning the maneuvers and protocol for the management of shoulder dystocia. Student midwives and medical students attended a lecture class including instruction about maneuvers and a presentation of an algorithm for the management of shoulder dystocia. They were randomized into two groups. The video group was reminded every two weeks to watch a short tutorial. The control group was reminded to consult the slide show. At the end of two months, they were evaluated by graders. The practice, theory, and global scores of the students in the video group were significantly higher than those of the students in the control group (14.8 vs. 10.4; 5.6 vs. 3.4; and 9.3 vs. 7.0, P<0.001). The scores for the video group improved at the second simulation session, compared with the first (14.8 vs. 9.9; 5.6 vs. 2.9; and 9.3 vs. 7, P<0.001). The addition of a video tutorial improved learning compared to a standard lecture and simulation session alone

Start-up rheometry of highly polydisperse magnetorheological fluids: experiments and simulations
An extensive experimental and simulation study is carried out in conventional magnetorheological fluids formulated by dispersion of mixtures of carbonyl iron particles having different sizes in Newtonian carriers. Apparent yield stress data are reported for a wide range of polydispersity indexes (PDI) from PDI = 1.63 to PDI = 3.31, which for a log-normal distribution corresponds to the standard deviation ranging from to . These results demonstrate that the effect of polydispersity is negligible in this range in spite of exhibiting very different microstructures. Experimental data in the magnetic saturation regime are in quantitative good agreement with particle-level simulations under the assumption of dipolar magnetostatic forces. The insensitivity of the yield stresses to the polydispersity can be understood from the interplay between the particle cluster size distribution and the packing density of particles inside the clusters
