Two-photon targeted, quad whole-cell patch-clamping robot
We present an automated quad-channel patch-clamp technology platform for ex vivo brain slice electrophysiology, capable of both blind and two-photon targeted robotically automated patching. The robot scales up the patch-clamp single-cell recording technique to four simultaneous channels, with seal success rates for two-photon targeted and blind modes of 54% and 68% respectively. In 50% of targeted trials (where specific cells were required), two simultaneous recordings or more were obtained. For blind mode, most trials yielded dual or triple recordings. This robot, a milestone on the path to a true in vivo targeted robotic multi-patching technology platform, will allow numerous studies into the function and connectivity patterns of both primary and secondary cell types
Large reduction with the Twisted Eguchi-Kawai model
We examine the breaking of symmetry recently reported for the Twisted
Eguchi-Kawai model (TEK). We analyse the origin of this behaviour and propose
simple modifications of twist and lattice action that could avoid the problem.
Our results show no sign of symmetry breaking and allow us to obtain values of
the large infinite volume string tension in agreement with extrapolations

Evaluating 5-nitrofurans as trypanocidal agents
The nitroheterocycle nifurtimox, as part of a nifurtimox-eflornithine combination therapy, represents one of a limited number of treatments targeting Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of human African trypanosomiasis. The mode of action of this prodrug involves an initial activation reaction catalysed by a type I nitroreductase (NTR), an enzyme found predominantly in prokaryotes, leading to the formation of a cytotoxic unsaturated open chain nitrile metabolite. Here, we evaluate the trypanocidal activity of a library of other 5-nitrofurans against bloodstream form T. brucei as a preliminary step in the identification of additional nitroaromatic compounds that could potentially partner eflornithine. Biochemical screening against purified enzyme revealed that all 5-nitrofurans were effective substrates for TbNTR with the preferred compounds having apparent kcat/KM values approximately 50-fold greater than nifurtimox. For several compounds, in vitro reduction by this nitroreductase yielded products characterized by mass spectroscopy as either unsaturated or saturated open chain nitriles. When tested against bloodstream form T. brucei, many of the derivatives displayed significant growth inhibitory properties with the most potent compounds generating IC50 values around 200 nM. The anti-parasitic activity of the most potent agents was demonstrated to be NTR dependent as parasites having reduced levels of the enzyme displayed resistance to the compounds while parasites over expressing TbNTR showed hypersensitivity. We conclude that other members of the 5-nitrofurans class of nitroheterocycles have potential to treat human African trypanosomiasis perhaps as an alternative partner prodrug to nifurtimox in the next generation of eflornithine-based combinational therapies
Genetic origins of social networks in rhesus macaques

Yet the genetic basis of sociality remains unclear. Here we provide evidence that social network tendencies are heritable in a gregarious primate. The tendency for rhesus macaques, Macaca mulatta, to be tied affiliatively to others via connections mediated by their social partners - analogous to friends of friends in people - demonstrated additive genetic variance. Affiliative tendencies were predicted by genetic variation at two loci involved in serotonergic signalling, although this result did not withstand correction for multiple tests. Aggressive tendencies were also heritable and were related to reproductive output, a fitness proxy. Our findings suggest that, like humans, the skills and temperaments that shape the formation of multi-agent relationships have a genetic basis in nonhuman primates, and, as such, begin to fill the gaps in our understanding of the genetic basis of sociality.We thank Bonn Aure, Jacqueline Buhl, Monica Carlson, Matthew McConnell, Elizabeth Maldonado, David Paulsen, Cecilia Penedo & the Caribbean Primate Research Center (CPRC) for assistance, and Roger Mundry for the use of PSAM software. Evaluation of the obturator foramen as a sex assessment trait
Correctly assessing sex from skeletal remains is one of the main elements of creating a biological profile. Many traits allow for this, the obturator foramen being one. However, research on its accuracy has provided mixed results. This study examines the obturator foramen using a 5-point grading scale to assess the degree of sexual dimorphism in four known age and sex skeletal collections from the UK and South Africa. Overall, sexual dimorphism was found in the obturator foramen when using the new scoring system; however, accuracies for correct sex classification ranged from ~ 46 to ~ 75%. Considering its wide range in accuracy rates across the four samples and difficulty in identifying the subtle changes in morphology, the obturator foramen should only be used as part of a multifactorial assessment of sex
Securing combined Fog-to-Cloud systems: challenges and directions
Nowadays, fog computing is emerged for providing computational power closer to the users. Fog computing brings real-time processing, lowlatency, geo-distributed and etc. Although, fog computing do not come to compete cloud computing, it comes to collaborate. Recently, Fog-To-Cloud (F2C) continuum system is introduced to provide hierarchical computing system and facilitates fog-cloud collaboration. This F2C continuum system might encounter security issues and challenges due to their hierarchical and distributed nature. In this paper, we analyze attacks in different layer of F2C system and identify most potential security requirements and challenges for the F2C continuum system. Capsular synovial metaplasia mimicking silicone leak of a breast prosthesis: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Synovial metaplasia around a prosthesis and in particular around silicone breast implants has been noted by various investigators, but has unknown clinical significance. We report on a patient where a large amount of synovial fluid mimicked rupture of an implant. We believe this to be an unusual clinical presentation of this phenomenon. Review of the English language literature failed to identify a comparable case.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 25-year-old woman had undergone bilateral breast augmentation for cosmetic reasons. One implant was subsequently subjected to two attempts at expansion to correct asymmetry. The patient was later found to have a large quantity of viscous fluid around the port of that same prosthesis. Histological assessment of the implant had consequently confirmed capsular synovial metaplasia. This had initially caused the suspicion of a silicone 'bleed' from the implant and had resulted in an unnecessary explantation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Capsular synovial metaplasia should be ruled out before the removal of breast implants where a leak is suspected. Manipulation and expansion of an implant may be risk factors for the development of synovial metaplasia.</p
Two-Point Functions and S-Parameter in QCD-like Theories
We calculated the vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudo-scalar two-point
functions up to two-loop level in the low-energy effective field theory for
three different QCD-like theories. In addition we also calculated the
pseudo-scalar decay constant . The QCD-like theories we used are those
with fermions in a complex, real or pseudo-real representation with in general
