    Welfare of horses from Mexico and the United States of America transported for slaughter in Mexico: Fitness profiles for transport and pre-slaughter logistics

    Every year thousands of horses from Mexico and the United States of America (USA) are transported to slaughter in Mexico, but little is known about their welfare or pre-slaughter logistics. In this study, we recorded the origin, sex, age and condition of horses (121 journeys, 2648 animals) upon arrival to an abattoir in northern Mexico, including transport details. Horse welfare was measured indirectly via individual scores for body condition, coat quality, lameness, ocular and nasal discharge, as well as reactivity to a chute restraint test, all performed shortly after unloading. The average journey duration was 9.69 (±7.6) hours for horses from Mexico and 16.77 (±4.51) hours for horses from the USA (77 % of all journeys). The prevalence of ocular discharge, nasal discharge, skin wounds, lameness and diarrhoea, were 23 %, 12 %, 11 %, 9 %, 1 % (respectively) of all the horses observed, with no significant differences between Mexican and American horses (P = 0.05). During the chute test the American horses were calmer than the Mexican ones (P < 0.001), who were more restless and aggressive (P = 0.001). Likewise, vocalizations in their three variants during the restraint, neigh/whinny (P = 0.018), nicker (P < 0.001), and snort (P = 0.018), were more common in horses from Mexico. In order to help characterize fitness for transport, a two-step cluster analysis was applied using the welfare indicators, suggesting the existence of four clusters (C) evaluated on arrival at the abattoir (from good to very poor fitness): good (profile C4, n = 769, 29.1 %), average (profile C1, n = 799 horses, 30.2 %), poor (profile C3, n = 586, 22.1 %) and very poor (profile C2, n = 494, 18.6 %). In fact, the C4 best welfare group had 0% lame, 0% nasal discharge, 16.4 % ocular discharge, 7.9 % skin wounds. Instead, the C2 poorest welfare group had 45.8 % lame, 61.1 % nasal discharge, 42.8 % ocular discharge, and 19.9 % skin wounds. Results show potential for using nasal discharge, lameness and ocular discharge as key indicators of horse fitness and welfare on abattoir. The study provides detailed scientific data to help establish strategies regarding optimal days of recovery post-transport and fattening for homogenization of weights between animals of different origins, logistic planning, and optimization of logistic resources to minimize the biological cost of long-distance transport

    Terahertz Emission of Gallium Arsenide on Textured p-type Silicon (100) Substrates Grown via Molecular Beam Epitaxy

    This study presents the terahertz (THz) emission of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) on surface textured p-type Silicon (p- Si) (100) substrates. Surface texturing was achieved by anisotropic wet chemical etching using 5% wt Potassium Hydroxide (KOH): Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) (50:1) solution for 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes. Reflectivity measurements for the textured p-Si(100) substrates indicated that the overall texturing increases with longer etching times. Raman spectroscopy of the post-growth samples confirmed GaAs growth. The THz emission intensities were the same order of magnitude. The GaAs grown on p-Si(100) textured for 60 minutes exhibited the most intense THz emission attributed to the increased absorption from a larger surface-to-volume ratio due to surface texturing.     Vitamin A and zinc levels in gastroenterological surgical patients: Relation with inflammation and postoperative complications

    Introducción: Se acepta que la depleción aún moderada de algunos nutrientes puede afectar la evolución del paciente quirúrgico. Objetivo: Evaluar la influencia de los niveles plasmáticos de retinol y de zinc preoperatorios sobre la evolución postoperatoria; evaluar la influencia de la inflamación sobre los niveles de ambos marcadores. Métodos: Se determinaron los niveles plasmáticos de retinol y zinc en 50 pacientes previo a ser sometidos a cirugías gastroenterológicas programadas. Para caracterizar el estado nutricional global de los pacientes se incluyeron el IMC y el porcentaje de pérdida de peso (%PP) previo a la cirugía. Se utilizó la Proteína C Reactiva (PCR) como marcador de inflamación. Durante el seguimiento se registraron las complicaciones postoperatorias. El presente análisis se realizó sobre 43 pacientes con información completa. Resultados: Se hallaron valores bajos de retinol (< 20 μg/dl) en 3 pacientes y de zinc (< 85 μg/dl) en 20 pacientes, siendo 9 de estos ultimos compatibles con deficiencia severa (< 70 μg/dl). Se registraron complicaciones postoperatorias en 17 pacientes. Los pacientes con complicaciones presentaron valores inferiores de Zn (78,4± 25,8 vs 87,8 ± 25,7 μ/dl) y de retinol (36,9 ± 14,5 vs 49,7 ± 20,6 μg/dl; P = 0,0318) respecto de los pacientes sin complicaciones; se observo una disminucion de la proporcion de complicaciones a medida que aumentaron los niveles de retinol y de Zn plasmaticos. No se observo relacion entre %PP y complicaciones; los pacientes con mayor %PP fueron los que tenian mayor peso habitual. La inflamacion afecto a ambos marcadores: el retinol bajo de 50,1± 17,2 a 44,0 ± 20,8 y a 23,7± 4,0 μg/dl para rangos de PCR < 0,5, 0,5-3,9 y ≥ 4 mg/dl, respectivamente; P = 0,0193. El zinc bajo de 90,1 ± 17,8 a 85,2± 29,9 y a 55,0± 25,9 μg/dl para los mismos rangos de PCR; P = 0,0195. El nivel de Zn tuvo influencia sobre el nivel de retinol, cayendo este a 33,1± 11,7 μg/dl en el grupo de pacientes con deficiencia severa de Zn (P = 0,0386). Conclusiones: Los resultados obtenidos permiten confirmar la influencia de la vitamina A y el zinc sobre la evolución postoperatoria, al tiempo que advierten sobre las interrelaciones entre vitamina A, zinc e inflamación, que generan dificultad para establecer la causa real de las deficiencias. Más allá de tales dificultades, los niveles plasmáticos de retinol y de zinc condicionan la disponibilidad del nutriente en el organismo y aparecen como marcadores promisorios de riesgo quirúrgico.Introduction: It is accepted that even mild nutrient depletion may affect the evolution of the surgical patient. Objective: To evaluate the influence of preoperative levels of plasma retinol and zinc on postoperative evolution of surgical patients; to evaluate the influence of inflammation on both level markers. Methods: Plasma retinol and zinc were determined in 50 patients before programmed gastroenterological surgeries. To detect global malnutrition BMI and weight loss percentage (WL%) were included. C-reactive protein (CRP) was included as inflammation marker. During follow up postoperative complications were recorded. The present analysis was carried out in 43 patients with complete information. Results: Low retinol values (< 20 μg/dl) were founded in 3 cases and low Zn values (< 85 μg/dl) in 20 cases, being 9 of them indicative of severe deficiency (< 70 μg/dl). Postoperative complications were recorded in 17 patients; patients with complications presented lower values of plasma Zn (78.4 ± 25.8 vs. 87.8 ± 25.7 μg/dl) and retinol (36.9 ± 14.5 vs. 49.7 ± 20.6; P = 0.0318) than those with no complications; the number of patients with complications decreased when retinol and Zn ranges increased. No relation between BMI or WL% and appearance of complications was founded; patients with higher WL% were those with higher usual weight. Inflammation affected both markers: retinol dropped from 50.1 ± 17.2 to 44.0 ±20.8 and to 23.7 ± 4.0 μg/dl for CRP ranges of < 0.5, 0.5-3.9 and ≥ 4 mg/dl, respectively (p = 0.0193); levels of zinc fell from 90.1 ± 17.8 to 85.2 ± 29.9 and to 55.0 ± 25.9 μg/dl for the same CRP ranges (P = 0.0195). Zn level influenced retinol level, dropping to 33.1 ± 11.7 μg/dl of retinol in the Zn severe deficiency group (P = 0.0386). Conclusions: The obtained results confirm the influence of vitamin A and zinc on postoperative evolution of the surgical patient, while alert about the interrelationships among vitamin A, zinc and inflammation, which lead to difficulty to establish the real source of deficiencies. Beyond these difficulties, retinol and zinc plasma levels determine the nutrient availability for the body and appear as promissory markers of surgical risk.Fil: Zago, Liliana Beatriz.     Hereditary Cancer Program (ProCanHe): 21-years of experience at a referral registry in Argentina

    Registries in South America were initiated in the early 90´s with thehelp of Henry T. Lynch. The Programa de Cancer Hereditario (Pro.Can.He), is a multidisciplinary program established in 1996 at theHospital Italiano, Argentina. The aim of the study is to update our 21-year experience to determine the applicability of genetic testshighlighting the most informative molecular findings in relation toLynch syndrome mostly.Materials and methods: Families undergoing genetic testing aftergenetic counselling between1996-2018 were included. Data were obtainedfrom a prospective IRB approved database. Clinicalepidemiologicaland molecular variables were analysed. Genetic testswere carried out after a genetic counselling session and obtainingthe informed consent of the patient.Molecular testingUntil 2015, the search for variants was carried out by PCR and Sangersequencing of exons and adjacent intronic regions of MLH1 andMSH2. Then, sequencing of MLH1/MSH2/MSH6/PMS2/EPCAM geneswas performed by NGS and large rearrangements were detected byMLPA. The variants were classified according to international databases.Variants with uncertain or unreported clinical significancewere analysed In-silico using the PolyPhen, SIFT and/or Human Splicingfinder 3.0 software.ResultsA total of 83 families (49 fulfilled Amsterdam Criteria [AC] and 34 BethesdaCriteria [BC]) were analysed. Pathogenic variants were foundin 26 out of 83 (31.3%) families, been 23 pathogenic and 3 likelypathogenic.Splice site and large rearrangements represented 19.2% (5/26) and11.5% (3/26) of the variants.23% (6/26) of them were originally describedin this series and 1 was a founding mutation from Piedmont,Italy. Affected genes include MSH2, MLH1, MSH6 and PMS2 (12, 11, 2and 1 cases respectively). Mutation detection rates in AC and BT familieswere 48.9% (N=24) and 5.9% (N=2), p<0.01. Among AC families,those with identified mutation had a lower median age of cancer onset and higher incidence of extra-CCR cancer than those withoutidentified mutations. Additionally, we have also studied other genesin patients with different clinical conditions included in the registry.We identified mutations in APC, MUTYH, BMPR1A, SMAD4, CDH1,BRCA1-2, CHEK2.ConclusionThe multidisciplinary approach and the international collaborationsallowed the correct implementation of the genetic tests. To ourknowledge, this study is the first Characterization of AC families accordingto genetic tests in South America.     BreastScreening: On the Use of Multi-Modality in Medical Imaging Diagnosis

    This paper describes the field research, design and comparative deployment of a multimodal medical imaging user interface for breast screening. The main contributions described here are threefold: 1) The design of an advanced visual interface for multimodal diagnosis of breast cancer (BreastScreening); 2) Insights from the field comparison of single vs multimodality screening of breast cancer diagnosis with 31 clinicians and 566 images, and 3) The visualization of the two main types of breast lesions in the following image modalities: (i) MammoGraphy (MG) in both Craniocaudal (CC) and Mediolateral oblique (MLO) views; (ii) UltraSound (US); and (iii) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).     The Expression of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide Receptor 1 Is Negatively Modulated by MicroRNA 525-5p

    Background: The human Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a neurokine with effects on the immune system where it is involved in promoting tolerance. In this context, one of its receptors, VPAC1, has been found to be down-modulated in cells of the immune network in response to activating stimuli. In particular, the bacterial liposaccaride (LPS), a strong activator of the innate immune system, induces a rapid decrease of VPAC1 expression in monocytes and this event correlates with polymorphisms in the 3'-UTR of the gene. Methodology/Principal Findings: MicroRNA 525-5p, having as putative target the 3'-UTR region of VPAC1, has been analysed for its expression in monocytes and for its role in down-modulating VPAC1 expression. We report here that miR-525-5p is promptly up-regulated in LPS-treated monocytes. This microRNA, when co-transfected in 293T cells together with a construct containing the 3'-UTR of the VPAC1 gene, significantly reduced the luciferase activity in a standard expression assay. The U937 cell line as well as primary monocytes enforced to express miR-525-5p, both down-modulate VPAC1 expression at similar extent. Conclusions/Significance: Our results show that the response to an inflammatory stimulus elicits in monocytes a rapid increase of miR-525-5p that targets a signaling pathway involved in the control of the immune homeostasis

    Metastatic eccrine porocarcinoma: report of a case and review of the literature

    Eccrine porocarcinoma (EPC) is a rare type of skin cancer arising from the intraepidermal portion of eccrine sweat glands or acrosyringium, representing 0.005-0.01% of all cutaneous tumors. About 20% of EPC will recur and about 20% will metastasize to regional lymph nodes. There is a mortality rate of 67% in patients with lymph node metastases.
