Density-Temperature-Softness Scaling of the Dynamics of Glass-forming Soft-sphere Liquids
The principle of dynamic equivalence between soft-sphere and hard-sphere
fluids [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{68}, 011405 (2003)] is employed to describe the
interplay of the effects of varying the density n, the temperature T, and the
softness (characterized by a softness parameter {\nu}^{-1}) on the dynamics of
glass-forming soft-sphere liquids in terms of simple scaling rules. The main
prediction is that the dynamic parameters of these systems, such as the
{\alpha}-relaxation time and the long-time self-diffusion coefficient, depend
on n, T, and {\nu} only through the reduced density n^\ast \equiv
n{\sigma}^{3}_{HS}(T, {\nu}),where the effective hard-sphere diameter
{\sigma}_{HS}(T, {\nu}) is determined, for example, by the
Andersen-Weeks-Chandler condition for soft-sphere-hard-sphere structural
equivalence. A number of scaling properties observed in recent simulations
involving glass-forming fluids with repulsive short range interactions are
found to be a direct manifestation of this general dynamic equivalence
principle. The self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (SCGLE) theory of
colloid dynamics is shown to accurately capture these scaling rule
Effect of stress and/or field annealing on the magnetic behavior of the âCo77Si13.5B9.5âŠ90Fe7Nb3 amorphous alloy
Variations of coercive field, induced magnetic anisotropy, and saturation magnetostriction constant
in sCo77Si13.5B9.5d90Fe7Nb3 amorphous ribbons submitted to stress and/or axial magnetic-field
annealing are reported. The annealing was carried out by using the Joule-heating effect saverage
temperature values of the sample corresponding to the intensity of the electrical current were 273,
378, 409, and 445 °Cd and the applied stress and axial magnetic field during the thermal treatments
were 500 MPa and 750 A/m, respectively. As a result of these treatments, a uniaxial in-plane
magnetic anisotropy, which affects drastically the soft magnetic character of the samples, was

General Non-equilibrium Theory of Colloid Dynamics
A non-equilibrium extension of Onsager's canonical theory of thermal
fluctuations is employed to derive a self-consistent theory for the description
of the statistical properties of the instantaneous local concentration profile
n(r,t) of a colloidal liquid in terms of the coupled time evolution equations
of its mean value n(r,t) and of the covariance {\sigma}(r,r';t) \equiv
of its fluctuations {\delta}n(r, t) = n(r, t) -
n(r, t). These two coarse-grained equations involve a local mobility function
b(r, t) which, in its turn, is written in terms of the memory function of the
two-time correlation function C(r, r' ; t, t') \equiv <{\delta}n(r,
t){\delta}n(r',t')>. For given effective interactions between colloidal
particles and applied external fields, the resulting self-consistent theory is
aimed at describing the evolution of a strongly correlated colloidal liquid
from an initial state with arbitrary mean and covariance n^0(r) and
{\sigma}^0(r,r') towards its equilibrium state characterized by the equilibrium
local concentration profile n^(eq)(r) and equilibrium covariance
{\sigma}^(eq)(r,r').
This theory also provides a general theoretical framework to describe
irreversible processes associated with dynamic arrest transitions, such as
aging, and the effects of spatial heterogeneities
Spectropolarimetric multi line analysis of stellar magnetic fields
In this paper we study the feasibility of inferring the magnetic field from
polarized multi-line spectra using two methods: The pseudo line approach and
The PCA-ZDI approach. We use multi-line techniques, meaning that all the lines
of a stellar spectrum contribute to obtain a polarization signature. The use of
multiple lines dramatically increases the signal to noise ratio of these
polarizations signatures. Using one technique, the pseudo-line approach, we
construct the pseudo-line as the mean profile of all the individual lines. The
other technique, the PCA-ZDI approach proposed recently by Semel et al. (2006)
for the detection of polarized signals, combines Principle Components Analysis
(PCA) and the Zeeman Do ppler Imaging technique (ZDI). This new method has a
main advantage: the polarized signature is extracted using cross correlations
between the stellar spectra nd functions containing the polarization properties
of each line. These functions are the principal components of a database of
synthetic spectra. The synthesis of the spectra of the database are obtained
using the radiative transfer equations in LTE. The profiles built with the
PCA-ZDI technique are denominated Multi-Zeeman-Signatures. The construction of
the pseudo line as well as the Multi-Zeeman-Signatures is a powerful tool in
the study of stellar and solar magnetic fields. The information of the physical
parameters that governs the line formation is contained in the final polarized
profiles. In particular, using inversion codes, we have shown that the magnetic
field vector can be properly inferred with both approaches despite the magnetic

Impact of concurrent pregnancy and lactation on maternal nestbuilding, estradiol and progesterone concentrations in rabbits
[EN] We evaluated the impact of concurrent pregnancy and lactation on: nest-building (i.e., digging, straw-carrying, hair-pulling), food intake, milk output, body weight, and the concentration of estradiol and progesterone in blood. Digging was lower in pregnant-lactating (PL) rabbits, compared with pregnant-only (PO) does, on 21-23 d (52±64 vs. 104±86 g, respectively; mean±SD; P<0.05). Straw-carrying was also reduced in PL does on 24-26 d (9±27 vs. 79±94 g; P<0.005), 27-29 (27±56 vs. 99±77 g; P<0.005), and in the total amount of material introduced into the nest box (132±167 vs. 286±217 g; P<0.02). Hair-pulling was expressed by practically all animals. Food intake declined in PO does on the three days preceding parturition (P<0.01) and increased markedly during lactation; this increase was much larger in PL than in lactating-only (LO) rabbits (P<0.01). Milk output was similar between PL and LO does during the first 21 d of lactation but a marked decline in this parameter occurred in PL does from then until 30 d. The differences in nest-building between PL and PO rabbits may be related to the concentrations of estradiol and progesterone on specific days of pregnancy. PL does showed significantly higher estradiol levels than PO animals on pregnancy 1 d (33±13 vs. 23±4 pg/mL; P<0.02) and 21 (34±19 vs. 24±6 pg/mL; P<0.05) and also higher levels of progesterone on pregnancy 1 d (4±5 vs. 1±2 ng/mL; P<0.05). However, PL rabbits had lower levels of progesterone on 7 d (6±3 vs. 9±2 ng/mL; P<0.02) and 14 d (8±3 vs. 11±3 ng/mL; P<0.005) than PO does. Production of Transglutaminase by Streptoverticillium ladakanum NRRL-3191 Grown on Media Made from Hydrolysates of Sorghum Straw
The aim of this work was to elucidate the suitability of the biotechnological production of transglutaminase by Streptoverticillium ladakanum NRRL-3191 grown on media made from hydrolysates of sorghum straw. Transglutaminase activity was determined in fermentations on sorghum straw hydrolysates and commercial xylose with initial xylose 10, 20 or 30 g/L. Using media containing commercial xylose 20 g/L, transglutaminase activity up to 0.282 U/mL was obtained in 96 h. Using neutralized, charcoal-treated hydrolysates of sorghum straw with xylose 30 g/L sterilized in autoclave at 121 °C, up to 0.155 U/mL was obtained in 96 h. However, when the sterilization was performed by filtration, using the same hydrolysates with xylose 20 g/L, up to 0.348 U/mL was obtained in 72 h. It was demonstrated that hydrolysates of sorghum straw are suitable media for transglutaminase production by Streptoverticillium ladakanum
