Press forming a 0/90 cross-ply advanced thermoplastic composite using the double-dome benchmark geometry

    Get PDF
A pre-consolidated thermoplastic advanced composite cross-ply sheet comprised of two uniaxial plies orientated at 0/90° has been thermoformed using tooling based on the double-dome bench-mark geometry. Mitigation of wrinkling was achieved using springs to apply tension to the forming sheet rather than using a friction-based blank-holder. The shear angle across the surface of the formed geometry has been measured and compared with data collected previously from experiments on woven engineering fabrics. The shear behaviour of the material has been characterised as a function of rate and temperature using the picture frame shear test technique. Multi-scale modelling predictions of the material’s shear behaviour have been incorporated in finite element forming predictions; the latter are compared against the experimental results

Disagreement between capture probabilities extracted from capture and quasi-elastic backscattering excitation functions

Experimental quasi-elastic backscattering and capture (fusion) excitation functions are usually used to extract the s-wave capture probabilities for the heavy-ion reactions. We investigated the 16^{16}O+120^{120}Sn,144^{144}Sm,208^{208}Pb systems at energies near and below the corresponding Coulomb barriers and concluded that the probabilities extracted from quasi-elastic data are much larger than the ones extracted from fusion excitation functions at sub and deep-sub barrier energies. This seems to be a reasonable explanation for the known disagreement observed in literature for the nuclear potential diffuseness derived from both methods.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

Performance measurement and management in portuguese law enforcement

    Get PDF
Performance measurement of police services is complicated by ambiguous and complex goal- and objectives-setting, and by the difficulties of measuring outputs. This article looks at the organizational and management changes being made in Portuguese police forces. The authors fill a gap in the literature on performance measurement in Portugal by taking a national approach to the study of how law enforcement agencies are introducing new management accounting changes. The article therefore widens the debate on performance measurement and performance improvements in law enforcement

Nitric oxide release from antimicrobial peptide hydrogels for wound healing

    Get PDF
Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenously produced molecule that has been implicated in several wound healing mechanisms. Its topical delivery may improve healing in acute or chronic wounds. In this study an antimicrobial peptide was synthesized which self-assembled upon a pH shift, forming a hydrogel. The peptide was chemically functionalized to incorporate a NO-donor moiety on lysine residues. The extent of the reaction was measured by ninhydrin assay and the NO release rate was quantified via the Griess reaction method. The resulting compound was evaluated for its antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, and its effect on collagen production by fibroblasts was assessed. Time-kill curves point to an initial increase in bactericidal activity of the functionalized peptide, and collagen production by human dermal fibroblasts when incubated with the NO-functionalized peptide showed a dose-dependent increase in the presence of the NO donor within a range of 0–20 µM.This work was financed by FEDER (Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional) funds via COMPETE 2020 (Operacional Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation (POCI), Portugal 2020), and by Portuguese funds through FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia/ Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior) in the framework of the projects “Institute for Research and Innovation in Health Sciences” (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007274) and PTDC/QUI-QFI/29914/2017, as well through the grant SFRH/BD/84914/2012. Vertex Operators and Soliton Solutions of Affine Toda Model with U(2) Symmetry

The symmetry structure of non-abelian affine Toda model based on the coset SL(3)/SL(2)U(1)SL(3)/SL(2)\otimes U(1) is studied. It is shown that the model possess non-abelian Noether symmetry closing into a q-deformed SL(2)U(1)SL(2)\otimes U(1) algebra. Specific two vertex soliton solutions are constructed.Comment: 17 pages, latex, misprints corrected, version to appear in J.Phys
