Large ferro–pyro–phototronic effect in 0.5Ba(Zr<inf>0.2</inf>Ti<inf>0.8</inf>)O<inf>3</inf>–0.5(Ba<inf>0.7</inf>Ca<inf>0.3</inf>)TiO<inf>3</inf> thin films integrated on silicon for photodetection
Coupling together the ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and photovoltaic characteristics within a single material is a novel way to improve the performance of photodetectors. In this work, we take advantage of the triple multifunctionality shown by 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3–0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (BCZT), as demonstrated in an Al/Si/SiO x /BCZT/ITO thin‐film device. The Si/SiO x acts as an n‐type layer to form a metal–ferroelectric–insulator–semiconductor heterostructure with the BCZT, and with Al and ITO as electrodes. The photo‐response of the device, with excitation from a violet laser (405 nm wavelength), is carefully investigated, and it is shown that the photodetector performance is invariant with the chopper frequency owing to the pyro‐phototronic effect, which corresponds to the coupling together of the pyroelectric and photovoltaic responses. However, the photodetector performance was significantly better than that of the devices operating based only on the pyro‐phototronic effect by a factor of 4, due to the presence of ferroelectricity in the system. Thus, after a poling voltage of −15 V, for a laser power density of 230 mW/cm2 and at a chopper frequency of 400 Hz, optimized responsivity, detectivity, and sensitivity values of 13.1 mA/W, 1.7 × 1010 Jones, and 26.9, respectively, are achieved. Furthermore, ultrafast rise and fall times of 2.4 and 1.5 µs, respectively, are obtained, which are 35,000 and 36,000 times faster rise and fall responses, respectively, than previous reports of devices with the ferro–pyro–phototronic effect. This is understood based on the much faster ferroelectric switching in ferroelectric thin films owing to the predominant 180° domains in a single direction out of plane
Delivery of an anti-transthyretin Nanobody to the brain through intranasal administration reveals transthyretin expression and secretion by motor neurons
Transthyretin (TTR) is a transport protein of retinol and thyroxine in serum and CSF, which is mainly secreted by liver and choroid plexus, and in smaller amounts in other cells throughout the body. The exact role of TTR and its specific expression in Central Nervous System (CNS) remains understudied. We investigated TTR expression and metabolism in CNS, through the intranasal and intracerebroventricular delivery of a specific anti-TTR Nanobody to the brain, unveiling Nanobody pharmacokinetics to the CNS. In TTR deficient mice, we observed that anti-TTR Nanobody was successfully distributed throughout all brain areas, and also reaching the spinal cord. In wild-type mice, a similar distribution pattern was observed. However, in areas known to be rich in TTR, reduced levels of Nanobody were found, suggesting potential targetmediated effects. Indeed, in wild-type mice, the anti-TTR Nanobody was specifically internalized in a receptor-mediated process, by neuronal-like cells, which were identified as motor neurons. Whereas in KO TTR mice Nanobody was internalized by all cells, for late lysosomal degradation. Moreover, we demonstrate that in vivo motor neurons also actively synthesize TTR. Finally, in vitro cultured primary motor neurons were also found to synthesize and secrete TTR into culture media. Thus, through a novel intranasal CNS distribution study with an anti-TTR Nanobody, we disclose a new cell type capable of synthesizing TTR, which might be important for the understanding of the physiological role of TTR, as well as in pathological conditions where TTR levels are altered in CSF, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosisThis work was supported by FEDER funds through the Operational Competitiveness Programme – COMPETE, by national funding from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the project PEst-C/SAU/LA0001/2011, QREN Brainiac 13141 and a post-doctoral fellowship (SFRH/BPD/84178/2012) to João Gomes. The authors acknowledge Paul Moreira for support in recombinant protein production and Paula Gon©calves, for tissue processing. The authors of the manuscript have the following potential competing interest: IC, HS, PV and, AW (left in 04/2012) were employees of ABLYNX at the time of work development. The other authors have no conflict of interests. The anti-TTR Nanobody discovery and characterization, as well as the quantification of Nanobodies in brain samples was performed by ABLYNX, whereas Nanobody delivery, tissue imaging, biochemistry processing as well as cellular cultures and data processing was performed by IBMC
Nurses' practices at health basic units in a city in the south of Brazil Las prácticas de enfermeros en unidades básicas de salud en un municipio del sur de Brasil Práticas de enfermeiros em unidades básicas de saúde em município do sul do Brasil
On Public Health, nurses can influence the care of the health needs of the population. The objective of this paper is to feature and understand the practices of nurses working at Health Basic Units. It is a qualitative research whereby semi-structured interviews were made with 15 nurses who work at Porto Alegre-Brasil. The treatment of the data was based on analysis of content of the thematic type. Outcomes indicate that the activities performed by nurses are influenced by the Health System and its limitations, especially the lack of nursing workers. Nurses are sought to solve problems that are not always related with their work, demonstrating the diversity of their practices. The conclusion is that the presence of nurses in the daily care and their articulating role contributes to change the realities of health.<br>En la Salud Colectiva los enfermeros pueden influir efectivamente en la atención de las necesidades de la salud de las poblaciones.
