There is no available adequate information on the biology and genetics of the Caspian salmon (salmo truta Caspiu) living in the Caspian Sea with other species such as common carp families, sturgeons and etc., therefore we are interested in knowing whether selection for rapid growth rate in salmo trutta Caspius will potentially lead to correlated genetic response in body weight and length. The potential for correlated responses was evaluated by the heritability estimation, estimating heritabilities of body weight and length. The genetic parameter estimations were obtained for different stages of growth from 5400 fish consisting 27 unrelated families that reached maturity at 36 months of age. The parent which used to produce separate family groups had been caught from the Caspian Sea and spawned during the autumn season. The estimated heritability of body weight and length was 0.42±0.13 and 0.49±0.01, respectively based on differential and selection response between parent pairs and their offsprings. Several factors may have affected the creation of this high level of estimation, dominant effect, inherited from different breeders to offspring

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the primary cause of mortality in the world and Iran. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic factors of short-term survival from acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in early and late patients in the Najafabad and Isfahan County, Iran. Methods: This hospital-based cohort study was conducted using the hospital registry of 1999-2009 in Iran. All patients (n = 14426) with an AMI referred to hospitals of Isfahan and Najafabad were investigated. To determine prognostic factors of short-term (28-days) survival in early and late patients, unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratio (HR) was calculated using univariate and multivariate Cox regression. Results: The short-term (28-day) survival rate of early and late patients was 96.6 and 89.4 (P < 0.001), respectively. In 80.0 of early and 79.3 of late patients, mortality occurred during the first 7 days of disease occurrence. HR of death was higher in women in the two groups; it was 1.97 in early patients was confidence interval (CI) 95%: 1.32-2.92 and 1.35 in late patients (CI 95%: 1.19-1.53) compared to men. HR of death had a rising trend with the increasing of age in the two groups. Conclusion: Short-term survival rate was higher in early patients than in late patients. In addition, case fatality rate (CFR) of AMI in women was higher than in men. In both groups, sex, age, an atomic location of myocardial infarction based on the International Classification of Disease, Revision 10 (ICD10), cardiac enzymes, and clinical symptoms were significant predictors of survival in early and late patients following AMI. © 2016, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS). Scientific and practical planning for achieving the lofty goals of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the framework of development plan of 1404 is the requirement to achieve sustainable development. Establishing roadmap of industries and products was considered by the scientific and technology office of the deputy president, in order to achieve the abovementioned objectives and in line with the national scientific comprehensive map. Therefore, present study was conducted as the roadmap of national aquatic-food processing development using available approved documents e.g. Iran perspective of 1404, fifth developing plan of I.R. of Iran, developing plan of Iranian fisheries organization in 1400 and the available approved statistical data. Current perspective of the aquatic-food processing is presented at the first chapter of the study. The second chapter reviewed the problems and obstacles. Third chapter tabulated the published studies and researches in fish handling and processing so far. Finally fourth chapter recommends executive and research projects considering quantitative and qualitative objectives of Iran 1400 plan as well as fifth developing plan of Shilat-Iran (Iranian fisheries organization). Authors hope the study to be useful in the national planning of I. R. of Iran in the future

The Effects of in ovo Nanocurcumin Administration on Oxidative Stress and Histology of Embryonic Chicken Heart

    No full text
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of nanocurcumin (NC) on oxidative stress and histology of embryonic chicken heart. NC was injected into the yolk of 4-day-old embryonic eggs at one of three doses: 10 ppm (NC10 group), 100 ppm (NC100 group), and 1000 ppm (NC1000 group). The control group received normal saline. Oxidative stress in heart tissue was evaluated by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, glutathione (GSH) content, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Serum lipids and cardio-histolopathogy were also measured. There were no significant differences in GSH, FRAP, and MDA levels between the control and treatment groups (P > 0.05). The serum lipid profile was altered in the NC100 group, with reduced levels of triglyceride (TG) (P < 0.01) but higher levels of HDL-c (P < 0.01) compared to the control. Heart histology was similar between NC10 and NC100 treatments compared to the control group. However, heart sections in NC1000 revealed focal areas of disrupted cardiac muscles and mild infiltration of mononuclear inflammatory cells between muscle fibers. It was concluded that NC at a concentration of 100 ppm did not damage heart tissues in chicken embryo and could be used as a valuable molecule for cardiovascular disease prevention

Medicinal plants and secondary metabolites for diabetes mellitus control

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common and complex problems of modern societies which has caused many economic and social problems. Because diabetes has no definite treatment, the use of traditional medicine seems to be an appropriate solution to control and manage it. Studies revealed that Vaccinium Arctostaphylos L., Securigera securidaca L., Gymnema sylvestre L., Atriplex halimus L., Camellia sinensis L., Ginkgo biloba L., Mamordica charantia L., Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad., Allium cepa L., Allium sativum L., Silybum marianum (L.), Gaertn and Trigonella foenum graecum L. are effective against diabetes. Flavonoids, quercin, metformin, quinolizidine, anthocyanin, catechin and flavone, phenylpropanoids, lipoic acid and coumarin metabolites were introduced major impact on diabetes. With regard to the study of plants and their metabolites and the mechanisms of their influence, it is clear that these plants have the potential to reduce blood sugar and diabetes and be considered as candidates for preparing new drugs. Combination of plants extracts or their components may also have synergistic effects to better act on diabetes. © 2014 Asian Pacific Tropical Medicine Press
