Aim. To conduct a qualitative, quantitative analysis and determine the antioxidant activity of dietary supplements with the pomegranate extract. Materials and methods. Three dietary supplements from different manufacturers – “Extract of pomegranate” (manufactured by Source Naturals), “Extract of pomegranate” (manufactured by Puritan Pride), and “Extract of pomegranate” (manufactured by Vitacost) – were chosen for the study. The thin layer chromatography (TLC) was used to perform the qualitative analysis, the quantity of biologically active substances (BAS) in dietary supplements was determined by the spectrophotometric method, the antioxidant activity – by potentiometric method. The qualitative analysis was performed by thin-layer chromatography (TLC); spectrophotometry was used for the quantitative determination, and the potentiometric method was applied to determine the antioxidant activity. Results and discussions. The presence of anthocyanins, flavonoids, catechins and phenolic acids were detected in the dietary supplements analyzed. The total content of phenolic compounds was 201.00 ± 6.03, 159.00 ± 4.77, 110.30 ± 3.30 mg, catechins was 16.10 ± 0.50, 11.60 ± 0.50, 7.33 ± 0.50 mg, anthocyanins was 43 ± 1.29, 32.00 ± 0.96, 22.00 ± 0.66 mg, and flavonoids was 30.15 ± 0.90, 29.44 ± 1.00, 18.21 ± 0.55 mg. The antioxidant activity was 266.11 ± 5.32, 212.12 ± 4.24, 150.81 ± 3.02 mmol-eqv./mextr for dietary supplements “Extract of pomegranate” (manufactured by Source Naturals), “Extract of pomegranate” (manufactured by Puritan Pride), “Extract of pomegranate” (manufactured by Vitacost) in 1 dosage form, respectively. Conclusions. The analysis of the qualitative composition, the quantitative content of BAS and the antioxidant activity of dietary supplements with the pomegranate extract allows us to find out that dietary supplements manufactured by Source Naturals and Puritans Pride meet the requirements of the State Pharmacopoeia of Ukraine (SPhU), while a dietary supplement manufactured by Vitacost does not correspond the requirements. The results of the study allow us to state that the problem of compliance of dietary supplements is relevant; therefore, it is necessary to introduce normative documentation for the identification and determination of BAS in dietary supplements.Мета – провести якісний, кількісний аналіз та визначити антиоксидантну активність дієтичних добавок з екстрактом граната. Background: Species of the genus Aeromonas are native inhabitants of aquatic environments and have recently been considered emerging human pathogens. Although the gastrointestinal tract is by far the most common anatomic site from which aeromonads are recovered, their role as etiologic agents of bacterial diarrhea is still disputed. Aeromonas-associated diarrhea is a phenomenon occurring worldwide; however, the exact prevalence of Aeromonas infections on a global scale is unknown. Methodology/Principal Findings: The prevalence and virulence potential of Aeromonas in patients suffering from diarrhea in Israel was studied using molecular methods. 1,033 diarrheal stools were sampled between April and September 2010 and Aeromonas species were identified in 17 (,2%) patients by sequencing the rpoD gene. Aeromonas species identity and abundance was: A. caviae (65%), A. veronii (29%) and Aeromonas taiwanensis (6%). This is the first clinical record of A. taiwanensis as a diarrheal causative since its recent discovery from a wound infection in a patient in Taiwan. Most of the patients (77%) from which Aeromonas species were isolated were negative for any other pathogens. The patients ranged from 1 to 92 years in age. Aeromonas isolates were found to possess different virulence-associated genes: ahpB (88%), pla/ lip/lipH3/apl-1 (71%), act/hlyA/aerA (35%), alt (18%), ast (6%), fla (65%), lafA (41%), TTSS ascV (12%), TTSS ascF-ascG (12%), TTSS-dependent ADP-ribosylating toxins aexU (41%) and aexT (6%) in various combinations. Marine Tar Residues: a Review

    Get PDF
Abstract Marine tar residues originate from natural and anthropogenic oil releases into the ocean environment and are formed after liquid petroleum is transformed by weathering, sedimentation, and other processes. Tar balls, tar mats, and tar patties are common examples of marine tar residues and can range in size from millimeters in diameter (tar balls) to several meters in length and width (tar mats). These residues can remain in the ocean envi-ronment indefinitely, decomposing or becoming buried in the sea floor. However, in many cases, they are transported ashore via currents and waves where they pose a concern to coastal recreation activities, the seafood industry and may have negative effects on wildlife. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge on marine tar residue formation, transport, degradation, and distribution. Methods of detection and removal of marine tar residues and their possible ecological effects are discussed, in addition to topics of marine tar research that warrant further investigation. Emphasis is placed on ben-thic tar residues, with a focus on the remnants of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in particular, which are still affecting the northern Gulf of Mexico shores years after the leaking submarine well was capped

To which world regions does the valence–dominance model of social perception apply?

    Get PDF
Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov’s valence–dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov’s methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov’s original analysis strategy, the valence–dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence–dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution.C.L. was supported by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF VRG13-007); L.M.D. was supported by ERC 647910 (KINSHIP); D.I.B. and N.I. received funding from CONICET, Argentina; L.K., F.K. and Á. TO IMPLEMENTATION OF THE BOLOGNA DECLARATION IN RUSSIA

    No full text
Relevance of the real research is caused by the fact that accession of Russia to the countries of the Bologna declaration was found by a number of her shortcomings. The analysis of the positioned advantages of the declaration and results their not the confirmations in educational system which have led to decrease in level of training of the let-out experts of the top skills is provided in article. The conclusion is drawn that implementation of the declaration not only doesn’t promote improvement of a condition of the higher education, but also discredits the existing earlier high quality of the higher education in Russia.

The problem of the involvement of the off-balance reserves of the metallic ores into the production process

    No full text
The underground mining of the ore deposits by means of the intensive methods of the traditional technologies is characterized by the loss of the reserves, which are off-balance for the technologies applied. The experience, which was accumulated by the state-of-the-art enterprises before the economic reforms and the crisis indicates, that it is possible to decrease the loss of metals. This can be assumed by means of involving the off-balance reserves into the production process with the metal lixiviation during closed work. The purpose of the present-day research is the substantiation of the technical possibility and economic reasonability of the lixiviation of metals from the off-balance reserves and poorly balance ores. The correct estimation of the perspectives of those combined technology is still one of the purposes. It is a matter of fact that combining traditional technologies of the underground mining with new ones concerned with the creation of the effective lixiviation of metals from ores can be carried out with the two-stage processing. It happens when the excavation of some amount of the balance reserves creates the compensational space for crushing off-balance reserves. Involving off-balance ores into the production process solves a set of the mining production problems. For example, the fullness of mineral resources usage, the strengthening of the resource base, the reduction of load of the environment and the security of works. The involvement of the off-balance reserves into the development in the course of the revaluation of the resources and in the technological facilities of the development in the context of the growth of the scale of production reduces the production price to the competitive level. The field of application of these results is in the mining enterprises which extract solid metal-containing ores by means of the underground mining. These ores are mostly of the nonferrous, rare and precious metals, which are easily opened by chemical reagents. Combining the technologies of the development for the arrangement of conditions for the lixiviation of metals from the off-balance ores considerably increases the mineral resources of the mining enterprises. It is also a reserve for the survival of the mining enterprises under the conditions of the continuing crisis. Conversion in the lixiviation technology is especially topical for the old mines of the Urals, which have a great reserve of the off-grade raw material
