    Stress Corrosion Analysis and Direct Cell Viability of Biodegradable Zn-Fe-Ca Alloy in In-Vitro Conditions

    Due to the excellent biocompatibility of Zn and Zn-based alloys, researchers have shown great interest in developing biodegradable implants based on zinc. Furthermore, zinc is an essential component of many enzymes and proteins. The human body requires ~15 mg of Zn per day, and there is minimal concern for systemic toxicity from a small zinc-based cardiovascular implant, such as an arterial stent. However, biodegradable Zn-based implants have been shown to provoke local fibrous encapsulation reactions that may isolate the implant from its surrounding environment and interfere with implant function. The development of biodegradable implants made from Zn-Fe-Ca alloy was designed to overcome the problem of fibrous encapsulation. In a previous study made by the authors, the Zn-Fe-Ca system demonstrated a suitable corrosion rate that was higher than that of pure Zn and Zn-Fe alloy. The Zn-Fe-Ca system also showed adequate mechanical properties and a unique microstructure that contained a secondary Ca-reach phase. This has raised the promise that the tested alloy could serve as a biodegradable implant metal. The present study was conducted to further evaluate this promising Zn alloy. Here, we assessed the material’s corrosion performance in terms of cyclic potentiodynamic polarization analysis and stress corrosion behavior in terms of slow strain rate testing (SSRT). We also assessed the ability of cells to survive on the alloy surface by direct cell culture test. The results indicate that the alloy develops pitting corrosion, but not stress corrosion under phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and air environment. The direct cell viability test demonstrates the successful adherence and growth of cells on the alloy surface

    Custom Unit Pump Development for the EVA PLSS

    This paper describes the effort by the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) and Honeywell for NASA to design and test a pre-flight prototype pump for use in the Extra-vehicular activity (EVA) portable life support subsystem (PLSS). Major design decisions were driven by the need to reduce the pump s mass, power, and volume compared to the existing PLSS pump. In addition, the pump must accommodate a much wider range of abnormal conditions than the existing pump, including vapor/gas bubbles and increased pressure drop when employed to cool two suits simultaneously. A positive displacement, external gear type pump was selected because it offers the most compact and highest efficiency solution over the required range of flow rates and pressure drops. An additional benefit of selecting a gear pump design is that it is self priming and capable of ingesting non-condensable gas without becoming air locked. The chosen pump design consists of a 28 V DC, brushless, seal-less, permanent magnet motor driven, external gear pump that utilizes a Honeywell development that eliminates the need for magnetic coupling. The pump design was based on existing Honeywell designs, but incorporated features specifically for the PLSS application, including all of the key features of the flight pump. Testing at TEES verified that the pump meets the design requirements for range of flow rates, pressure drop, power consumption, working fluid temperature, operating time, gas ingestion, and restart capability under both ambient and vacuum conditions. The pump operated at 40 to 240 lbm/hr flow rate, 35 to 100 oF pump temperature, and 5 to 10 psid pressure rise. Power consumption of the pump controller at the nominal operating point in both ambient and vacuum conditions was 9.5 W, which was less than the 12 W predicted. Gas ingestion capabilities were tested by injecting 100 cc of air into the fluid line; the pump operated normally throughout this test

    Childhood IQ and marriage by mid-life: the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 and the Midspan Studies

    The study examined the influence of IQ at age 11 years on marital status by mid-adulthood. The combined databases of the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 and the Midspan studies provided data from 883 subjects. With regard to IQ at age 11, there was an interaction between sex and marital status by mid-adulthood (p = 0.0001). Women who had ever-married achieved mean lower childhood IQ scores than women who had never-married (p < 0.001). Conversely, there was a trend for men who had ever-married to achieve higher childhood IQ scores than men who had never-married (p = 0.07). In men, the odds ratio of ever marrying was 1.35 (95% CI 0.98–1.86&#59; p = 0.07) for each standard deviation increase in childhood IQ. Among women, the odds ratio of ever marrying by mid-life was 0.42 (95% CI 0.27–0.64; p = 0.0001) for each standard deviation increase in childhood IQ. Mid-life social class had a similar association with marriage, with women in more professional jobs and men in more manual jobs being less likely to have ever-married by mid-life. Adjustment for the effects of mid-life social class and height on the association between childhood IQ and later marriage, and vice versa, attenuated the effects somewhat, but suggested that IQ, height and social class acted partly independently

    Analyzing Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Risk Using Time-Series Model

    Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most global frequent liver disease, with a prevalence of almost 20% in the overall population. NAFLD may progress to fibrosis and later into cirrhosis in addition to other diseases. Our objective is to stratify patients\u27 risks for NAFLD and advanced fibrosis over time and suggest preventive medical decisions. We used a cohort of individuals from the Tel-Aviv medical center. Time-series clustering machine learning model (Hidden Markov Models (HMM)) was used to profile fibrosis risk by modeling patients’ latent medical status and trajectories over time. The best-fitting model had three latent HMM states. Initial results show that tracking individuals over time and their relative risk for fibrosis at each point of time provides significant clinical insights regarding each state (and its group of individuals). Thus, longitudinal risk stratification can enable the early identification of specific individual groups following distinct medical trajectories based on their routine visits

    The real-world safety profile of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors among older adults (≥ 75 years): a retrospective, pharmacovigilance study

    BackgroundAs indications for sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are expanding, a growing number of older adults have become candidates for treatment. We studied the safety profile of SGLT2i among older adults.MethodsA retrospective, pharmacovigilance study of the FDA's global database of safety reports. To assess reporting of pre-specified adverse events following SGLT2i among adults (< 75 years) and older adults (>= 75), we performed a disproportionality analysis using the sex-adjusted reporting odds ratio (adj.ROR).ResultsWe identified safety reports of 129,795 patients who received non-insulin anti-diabetic drugs (NIAD), including 24,253 who were treated with SGLT2i (median age 60 [IQR: 51-68] years, 2,339 [9.6%] aged >= 75 years). Compared to other NIAD, SGLT2i were significantly associated with amputations (adj.ROR = 355.1 [95%CI: 258.8 - 487.3] vs adj.ROR = 250.2 [79.3 - 789.5]), Fournier gangrene (adj.ROR = 45.0 [34.5 - 58.8] vs adj.ROR = 88.0 [27.0 - 286.6]), diabetic ketoacidosis (adj.ROR = 32.3 [30.0 - 34.8] vs adj.ROR = 23.3 [19.2 - 28.3]), genitourinary infections (adj.ROR = 10.3 [9.4 - 11.2] vs adj.ROR = 8.6 [7.2 - 10.3]), nocturia (adj.ROR = 5.5 [3.7 - 8.2] vs adj.ROR = 6.7 [2.8 - 15.7]), dehydration (adj.ROR = 2.5 [2.3 - 2.8] vs adj.ROR = 2.6 [2.1 - 3.3]), and fractures (adj.ROR = 1.7 [1.4 - 2.1] vs adj.ROR = 1.5 [1.02 - 2.1]) in both adults and older adults, respectively. None of these safety signals was significantly greater in older adults (P-interaction threshold of 0.05). Acute kidney injury was associated with SGLT2i in adults (adj.ROR = 1.97 [1.85 - 2.09]) but not in older adults (adj.ROR = 0.71 [0.59 - 0.84]). Falls, hypotension, and syncope were not associated with SGLT2i among either adults or older adults.ConclusionIn this global post-marketing study, none of the adverse events was reported more frequently among older adults. Our findings provide reassurance regarding SGLT2i treatment in older adults, although careful monitoring is warranted
