Incorporating Naloxone Education Into Routine Primary Care

    Get PDF
Opioid overdoses are a growing public health concern in Vermont and nationwide. Naloxone can save the life of someone who overdoses, if those around them know how to use it. This project investigates the feasibility of offering naloxone education as an element of routine primary care encounters with patients who do not use opioids themselves.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1472/thumbnail.jp

Archaeometric Characterization of Roman Tile Fabrics from the Sangro Valley, Italy

In this paper, I use archaeometric methods to investigate the raw materials and manufacture of terracotta roof tiles from three Roman sites in the Sangro Valley, Abruzzo, Italy. Although fragmentary remains of the tegula and imbrex roof system are commonly uncovered at sites throughout the ancient world, these tiles are woefully understudied. Equally obscure are the workings of the economy of Samnium during and after its conquest by the Romans. As mass-produced industrial materials generally manufactured and used within a small radius, tiles may prove to be the ideal medium through which to explore the regional ceramic economy. This study applies ceramic petrography and x-ray fluorescence to tiles from the Sangro Valley Project\u27s excavations at Monte Pallano, Acquachiara, and San Giovanni, as well as to samples of local clays and regional coarsewares, in order to identify mineralogical and chemical patterns related to clay sourcing and tile production. These efforts cast doubt on the validity of current methods for identifying ceramic groups and creating fabric typologies, yet they simultaneously shed light on the nature of tile manufacturing in the ancient Sangro Valley, suggesting a pattern of decentralized production in a diffusely settled area. This, in turn, may prove significant for the archaeological interpretation of social and economic trends in the region

Method for Adaptive Labels on Content Based on the Accessibility Persona or Domain Expertise of the User

The present disclosure describes computer-implemented systems and methods for providing adaptable accessibility labels to web content and web applications by selecting labels that are targeted to different cohorts of users based on the user’s skill level and disability. Accessibility labels that are targeted to the user’s skill level and disability are selected from multiple variants of labels and provided to the user to help the user understand the application better than with the general labels that apply to all users regardless of skill level or disability

Mycosis Fungoides Associated with Kaposi\u27s Sarcoma, T-cell Rich B-cell Lymphoma, and T cell Lymphoma with Angioimmunoblastic Features

A patient with mycosis fungoides (MF), Kaposi\u27s sarcoma, T-cell B-cell rich lymphoma and T-cell lymphoma with angioimmunoblastic features is described. The appearance of multiple malignancies in this patient may have been caused by previous exposure to radiation in the Chernobyl accident and/or systemic chemotherapy for the initial T-cell B-cell rich lymphoma which he underwent.</p

Needs Assessment of Suicide Prevention in Vermont Middle and High Schools

    Get PDF
Introduction. Adolescent suicide is epidemic. 17% of high school students con- sidered suicide and 8% attempting to take their lives in 2015 nationwide. Vermont has seen a 2% increase within the last two years according to the VT Youth Risk Behavior Survey. School is one of several settings where effective suicide interventions could take place. Previous studies have identified means prevention as an effective way to combat adolescent suicide. This study aims to identify training levels and comfort of school staff in dealing with suicidality. Methods. A survey was emailed to all schools in Vermont covering grades 6-12. The survey addressed employee demographics, training, perception of suicide in their school, and concern regarding lethal means. Questions were multiple choice, scaled and free responses. Data was analyzed using SPSS and free responses were organized using thematic content analysis. Results. 126 responses represented 46% of Vermont middle and high schools. 77% agreed or strongly agreed that they felt confident in recognizing a student with suicidality. Respondents were not comfortable implementing lethal means prevention. Respondents identified early intervention and trusting communicative relationships as key to prevention, and identified lack of time, protocols, and resources as obstacles. Discussion. Respondents identified suicidality in 2.2% of their students, com- pared to the YRBS that recognized 12% of adolescents. Survey technique may con- tribute to this discrepancy, but it is also likely that schools are failing to identify students at risk. A lack of comfort recognizing suicidality and implementing prevention techniques warrants standardized training, screening and response protocols.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1265/thumbnail.jp

An Uncommon Presentation of Darier-White Disease with Hystrix-like Palmoplantar Keratoderma

    Get PDF
Darier-White disease is a relatively common autosomal dominant genodermatosis caused by mutation in the ATP2A2 gene. It is characterized by multiple warty papules coalescing into plaques in the seborrheic areas and by specific histological skin changes. Palm and sole involvement in Darier-White disease is usually mild, mainly featuring discrete and small keratotic papules. We present a unique case of Darier-White disease presenting with a diffuse, mutilating hystrix-like palmoplantar keratoderma

CRP Levels as a Prognostic Factor in Mycosis Fungoides

    Get PDF
Mycosis Fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS) are the most com- mon forms of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. Few validated prognostic factors have been reported in MF/SS, especially when compared with non-cutaneous lympho- mas. Increased C-reactive protein (CRP) levels have recently been associated with poor clinical outcome in various malignancies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of serum CRP levels at diagnosis in patients with MF/ SS. This retrospective study included 76 patients with MF/SS. Stage was assigned according to the ISCL/EORTC guidelines. The follow-up period was 24 months or more. Disease course and response to treatment were determined using quantita- tive scales. Wilcoxon’s rank test and multivariate regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Increased CRP levels correlated significantly with advanced stages (Wilcoxon’s test, P>0.0001). Furthermore, increased CRP levels were associated with a lower treatment response rate (Wilcoxon’s test, P=0.0012). Multivariate regression analysis showed that CRP is an independent predictor of advanced clinical stage at diagnosis. The present data suggest that elevated CRP levels could serve as a useful prognostic factor in MF/SS and may assist in guiding treatment choices
