    Thermal correction to resistivity in dilute 2D systems

    We calculate the resistivity of 2D electron (hole) gas, taking into account the degeneracy and the thermal correction due to the combined Peltier and Seebeck effects. The resistivity is found to be universal function of temperature, expressed in units of he2(kFl)−1\frac{h}{e^{2}} (k_{F}l)^{-1}. The giant parallel magnetiresistivity found to result from the spin and, if exists, valley splitting of the energy spectrum. Our analysis of compressibility and thermopower points to thermodynamic nature of metal-insulator transition in 2D systems.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, ICPS'26, D113, Edinburgh, U

    Emergence of quasi-metallic state in disordered 2D electron gas due to strong interactions

    The interrelation between disorder and interactions in two dimensional electron liquid is studied beyond weak coupling perturbation theory. Strong repulsion significantly reduces the electronic density of states on the Fermi level. This makes the electron liquid more rigid and strongly suppresses elastic scattering off impurities. As a result the weak localization, although ultimately present at zero temperature and infinite sample size, is unobservable at experimentally accessible temperature at high enough densities. Therefore practically there exists a well defined metallic state. We study diffusion of electrons in this state and find that the diffusion pole is significantly modified due to "mixture" with static photons similar to the Anderson - Higgs mechanism in superconductivity. As a result several effects stemming from the long range nature of diffusion like the Aronov - Altshuler logarithmic corrections to conductivity are less pronounced.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.

    Legacy Planning, Regeneration and Events: The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

    This paper focuses upon the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games (CWG) legacy proposals regarding the regeneration of the East End. It provides a preliminary pre-event evaluation by examining local progress towards urban regeneration legacies, primarily physical and economic renewal. Following an examination of the events' legacy landscape and problems within the legacy planning process, the paper outlines the socio-economic profile of the locale. Thereafter, the relevance of the CWG to the area is highlighted and an evaluation of the progress towards physical and economic urban regeneration goals is charted. Key risks in the legacy planning process are identified. It is suggested that while there are elements of good practice in local progress towards legacy planning and regeneration, there are community issues that could pose tensions.
