    Effectiveness of neem seed oil (Azadirachta indica A. Juss: Meliaceae) on Syllepte derogata Fabricius, Lepidoptera: Pyralidae

    Objective: Synthetic insecticides have long been used for cotton protection,  resulting in pest resistance, toxicity and environmental pollution. Biopesticides have been suggested as alternatives to synthetic pesticides. Both field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of neem oil in controlling Syllepte derogata (Fabricius), a cotton phyllophagous pest.Methodology and Results: In the field trials, effect of neem oil was compared to that of conventional insecticides; while in the laboratory direct larval immersion and leaf dip method using EMA SUPER 56DC and neem oil were tested. Decrease in damage by S. derogata for about 63 and 86% was recorded with neem oil and synthetic insecticides. In the laboratory, the mortality of S. derogata after 24 hours exposure to neem oil and Ema Super was significantly higher (2.5 to 100%) than that of the control. The mortality of larvae of S. derogata was positively correlated with the concentration of neem oil and exposure time. Lethal Concentration (LC50) after 24 hours exposure of larvae was respectively 4.03 104 ml/l and 51.13 ml/l forleaf dipping method and larval immersion.Conclusion and application of results: Overall, these results showed the efficacy of neem oil in controlling S. derogata, as a biopesticide. This oil could also  constitute a successful alternative to synthetic pesticides. However, the  effectiveness of neem oil appeared to be weakened by the rapid degradation of the active substances, azadirachtin in particular. Indeed, azadirachtin, the main active ingredient of neem is photo and heat labile. It easily degrades under high solar radiations and high temperatures, hence the need for stabilization.Keywords: Phyllophagous pest, integrated pest management, leaf-dipping method, larval immersion, Lethal Concentration

    Giving Voice to the Voiceless: The Use of Digital Technologies by Marginalized Groups

    This paper reports on a workshop hosted at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in September, 2018. The workshop, called “Giving Voice to the Voiceless: The Use of Digital Technologies by Marginalized Groups”, focused on discussing how marginalized groups use digital technologies to raise their voices. At the workshop, a diverse group of scholars and doctoral students presented research projects and perspectives on the role that digital technologies have in activist projects that represent marginalized groups that have gained momentum in the last few years. The studies and viewpoints presented shed light on four areas in which IS research can expand our understanding about how marginalized groups use digital technologies to address societal challenges: 1) the rise of cyberactivism, 2) resource mobilization for cyberactivism, 3) cyberactivism by and with marginalized groups, and 4) research methods for examining how marginalized groups use digital technologies

    Doctors under the microscope: the birth of medical audit

    In 1989 a UK government White Paper introduced medical audit as a comprehensive and statutory system of assessment and improvement in quality of care in hospitals. A considerable body of research has described the evolution of medical audit in terms of a struggle between doctors and National Health Service managers over control of quality assurance. In this paper we examine the emergence of medical audit from 1910 to the early 1950s, with a particular focus on the pioneering work of the American surgeons Codman, MacEachern and Ponton. It is contended that medical professionals initially created medical audit in order to articulate a suitable methodology for assessing individual and organisational performance. Rather than a means of protecting the medical profession from public scrutiny, medical auditing was conceived and operationalised as a managerial tool for fostering the active engagement of senior hospital managers and discharging public accountability. These early debates reveal how accounting was implicated in the development of a system for monitoring and improving the work of medical professionals, advancing the quality of hospital care, and was advocated in ways, which included rather than excluded managers

    Cattle genome-wide analysis reveals genetic signatures in trypanotolerant N'Dama

    Abstract Background Indigenous cattle in Africa have adapted to various local environments to acquire superior phenotypes that enhance their survival under harsh conditions. While many studies investigated the adaptation of overall African cattle, genetic characteristics of each breed have been poorly studied. Results We performed the comparative genome-wide analysis to assess evidence for subspeciation within species at the genetic level in trypanotolerant N’Dama cattle. We analysed genetic variation patterns in N’Dama from the genomes of 101 cattle breeds including 48 samples of five indigenous African cattle breeds and 53 samples of various commercial breeds. Analysis of SNP variances between cattle breeds using wMI, XP-CLR, and XP-EHH detected genes containing N’Dama-specific genetic variants and their potential associations. Functional annotation analysis revealed that these genes are associated with ossification, neurological and immune system. Particularly, the genes involved in bone formation indicate that local adaptation of N’Dama may engage in skeletal growth as well as immune systems. Conclusions Our results imply that N’Dama might have acquired distinct genotypes associated with growth and regulation of regional diseases including trypanosomiasis. Moreover, this study offers significant insights into identifying genetic signatures for natural and artificial selection of diverse African cattle breeds
