The University Immune System: Overcoming Resistance to Change
A university, similar to any other organization, has an immune system that erects a powerful barrier against change. This article discusses the university immune system and what can be done to counteract its negative effects and thereby allow change to occur
A Multicenter, Prospective, Randomized, Contralateral Study of Tissue Liquefaction Liposuction vs Suction-Assisted Liposuction
Tissue liquefaction liposuction (TLL) deploys a novel energy source utilizing a stream of warmed, low-pressurized, and pulsed saline to extract fat tissue.
Objectives:
Compare TLL to suction-assisted liposuction (SAL) to determine which device is more efficient for surgeons and provides better recovery for patients.
Methods:
Thirty-one adult female patients were followed prospectively in a contralateral study design comparing differences in bruising, swelling, tenderness, and incision appearance ratings between TLL and SAL procedures. Surgical efficiency and appearance of the lipoaspirate were also compared.
Results:
All 31 patients successfully completed the study. For TLL and SAL procedures, the average volumes of infusion (1.242 vs 1.276 L) and aspirated supernatant fat (704 vs 649 mL) were statistically similar. TLL median fat extraction rate was faster than SAL (35.6 vs 25 mL/min; P < 0.0001), and stroke rate was reduced in TLL vs SAL procedures (48 vs 120 strokes/min; P < 0.0001), and both were statistically significant. The mean total scores for bruising, swelling, treatment site tenderness, and incision appearance were lower, indicating improved patient recovery on the TLL side.
Conclusions:
TLL and SAL techniques produced comparable volume of fat aspirate. TLL demonstrated a 42% faster fat extraction rate and a 68% reduction in arm movements needed to complete the procedure compared to SAL, both of these differences are statistically significant. The TLL side was noted to have reduced bruising and swelling and improved incision site appearance with less tenderness compared to the SAL side
Genetic predisposition to mosaic Y chromosome loss in blood.
Mosaic loss of chromosome Y (LOY) in circulating white blood cells is the most common form of clonal mosaicism1-5, yet our knowledge of the causes and consequences of this is limited. Here, using a computational approach, we estimate that 20% of the male population represented in the UK Biobank study (n = 205,011) has detectable LOY. We identify 156 autosomal genetic determinants of LOY, which we replicate in 757,114 men of European and Japanese ancestry. These loci highlight genes that are involved in cell-cycle regulation and cancer susceptibility, as well as somatic drivers of tumour growth and targets of cancer therapy. We demonstrate that genetic susceptibility to LOY is associated with non-haematological effects on health in both men and women, which supports the hypothesis that clonal haematopoiesis is a biomarker of genomic instability in other tissues. Single-cell RNA sequencing identifies dysregulated expression of autosomal genes in leukocytes with LOY and provides insights into why clonal expansion of these cells may occur. Collectively, these data highlight the value of studying clonal mosaicism to uncover fundamental mechanisms that underlie cancer and other ageing-related diseases. This research has been conducted using the UK Biobank Resource under application 9905 and 19808. Examining the correctness of measurements performed with precise digital leveler
Do wykrywania ewentualnych nieprawidłowości w pomiarach zastosowano statystyczny test zgodności Kołmogorowa-Lilieforsa, sprawdzając hipotezę H0
o normalności rozkładu błędów pomiarowych.
Dla sprawdzenia i potwierdzenia wyników wynikających z powyższego
testu przeprowadzono dodatkowe badania statystyczne stosując statystyki:
1. Cramera - von Misesa: W2 i W12.
2. Watsona: U2 i U12
Z przeprowadzonych badań wyciągnięto wnioski dotyczące jakości pomiarów geodezyjnych wykonanych testowanym instrumentem. In order to verify that measurements made with a digital leveler "WILD NA
3000" are burdened with errors, distorting the results of these observations, numerous measurements of height differences between points of a leveling net set up
in the Department of Environment and Geodesy of the University of Agriculture in
Cracow were performed
Measurements were made on a network of three closed leveling mesh,
assessing of height differences in those leveling mesh 35-times.
To detect possible anomalies in the measurement, a statistical compatibility
tests of Kolmogorov – Liliefors was used, checking the hypothesis H0 of normal
distribution of measurement errors.
To verify and confirm the results coming from concerned test, additional
test were launched using the statistics:
1 Cramer – von Mises: W2 and W1
2 Watson: U2 and U12
Performed analysis gives overview on measurements quality with use of
tested instrument
Methodology of the cv aluation of geodetic equipment using tests of mathematical statistics
W pracy przedstawiono problem związany z ustalaniem dokładności użytkowej
instrumentów geodezyjnych. Wyniki pomiarów testowych zostaną poddane
ocenie za pomocą testów statystyki matematycznej tzn. za pomocą statystycznego
testu Abbe`go oraz testu Shapiro-Wilka.
The paper presents the problem of determining the accuracy usable of geodetic
Instruments. The results of test measurements will be evaluated using tests of
mathematical statistics by the statistical Abeb's test and the Shapiro - Wilk test. Will
discuss the theoretical basis for conformance testing and arę given ways of their
practical application.
The study concludes that the tested instruments meet the conditions of both statistical
tests and thus arę suitable for making measurements in engineering geodesy
Proposal for a comprehensive study of electronic total station
Do badania poprawności pomiarów długościowych zastosowano statystyczny test zgodności ABBE`GO [Krysicki 1986 ].
The paper shows how to conduct a comprehensive study of the accuracy of
the measurements made with an electronic total station TRIMBLE 5602 DR 200 +.
The results of the measurements of lenghts, horizontal angles and elevations
were examined.
Measurements were performed on a test network of the Agricultural
University in Krakow and the results of mathematical statistics methods have been
developed to detect the presence of any irregularities in them.
Statistical surveys of these three groups of measurements were performed
in order to check if their distributions of errors correspond to the normal
distribution. This determines the accuracy of test measurements and the usefulness
of the tested total station for the performance surveying.
To study the accuracy of length measurements a statistical ABBE test of
compliance were used.
Measurements of angular and elevations were tested using the test of
identity:
- for measuring of horizontal angles MANN-WHTNEY-WILCOXON test
was used
- for measurements of elevations - SERIES test
To verify the results of these three statistical tests - all measuring groups
were studied with tests parameters.
1/ S-factor asymmetry (skewness)
2/ e – flattening factor (excess, newfangled).
From the measurements and statistical studies drew the conclusions on the
correctness of the results of the measurements made with tested equipment, and
usefulness of this total station to perform various types of surveying
Accuracy analysis, of measurements made by precise electronic total station in the approach of mathematical statistics research
Aby sprawdzić poprawność pomiarów wykonywanych precyzyjnym tachimetrem elektronicznym Leica TC 2003, wykonano pomiary testowe polegające na 36-cio krotnym pomiarze odległości oraz kątów poziomych, które mierzono w dwóch położeniach lunety.
Do badania zgodności rozkładu błędów doświadczalnych z teoretycznym
rozkładem N(0;1), co świadczyłoby o poprawności działania badanego sprzętu, zastosowano
dwie metody badań statystycznych:
1. obliczając parametry rozkładu:
a) spłaszczenie „ e"
b) asymetrię „S"
oraz ich błędy średnie,
2. statystyczny test zgodności Andersona-Darlinga.
Z przeprowadzonych pomiarów oraz badań statystycznych wyciągnięto
wnioski co do poprawności pomiarów wykonywanych badanym sprzętem. To verify the precision of measurements made with a precise electronic total
station Leica TC 2003, test measurements consisting of 36-fold measurement of
distances and horizontal angles were taken, measurements were made in two telescope
positions.
To examine the compatibility of the distribution of experimental errors with
the theoretical distribution N (0;1), which would indicate a proper working of the
tested equipment, two methods of statistical surveys were used:
1. calculating the distribution parameters: a) flattening e
b) assymetry S
and their average errors,
2. Anderson-Darling statistical test of compatibility .
The study allowed to conclude correctness of results obtained from measurements
with the tested instrument
