    The geometric stochastic resonance and rectification of active particles

    This thesis describes the work of three research projects, the background research that motivated the work, and the resultant project findings. The three projects concerned: (i) Geometric stochastic resonance in a double cavity, (ii) Synchronisation of geometric stochastic resonance by a bi-harmonic drive, and (iii) Rectification of Brownian particles with oscillating radii in asymmetric corrugated channels. In the project 'Geometric stochastic resonance in a double cavity', we investigated synchronisation processes for the geometric stochastic resonance of particles diffusing across a porous membrane and subject to a periodic driving force. Non-interacting particle currents were driven through a symmetric membrane pore either parallel or perpendicular to the membrane. Then, harmonic mixing spectral current components were generated by the combined action of parallel and perpendicular drives. The role of the repulsive interaction of particles as a controlling factor with potential applications to the transport of colloids and biological molecules through narrow pores was also investigated. In 'Synchronisation of geometric stochastic resonance by a bi-harmonic drive', we simulated the stochastic dynamics of an elliptical particle using the Langevin equation. The particle was simultaneously driven by low and high frequency harmonic drives across a porous inter-cavity membrane. It was observed that the particle oscillated out of phase with the low frequency drive. This effect was due to the absolute negative mobility the particle would have exhibited if the low frequency drive had been replaced by a dc static force. It was also observed that the magnitude of this out-of-phase stochastic resonance depends on how the combined action of the driving forces and noise fluctuations affect the particle orientation, and as such was shown to be sensitive to the particle shape. This emphasises the importance of particle geometry, in addition to chamber geometry, to the realisation and optimisation of geometric stochastic resonance. In the project 'Rectification of Brownian particles with oscillating radii in asymmetric corrugated channels', we simulated the transport of a Brownian particle with an oscillating radius freely diffusing in an asymmetric corrugated channel over a range of driving forces for a series of temperatures and angular frequencies of radial oscillation. It was observed that there was a strong influence of self-oscillation frequency upon the average particle velocity. This effect can be used to control rectification of biologically active particles as well as for their separation according to their activity, for instance in the separation of living and dead cells.     Minding Children in the Study of Liturgy

    Recent interest in philosophy of religion on religious practice more generally, and liturgical rituals in particular, opens up new avenues for thinking about the religious lives of young children. In this article I consider what it means to say that young children are part of a worshipping assembly, and in what ways they might count as exemplary religious practitioners. There is very little discussion of the religious experiences and practices of children in the philosophy of religion, and I argue that this lacuna should be addressed. Taking cues from Nicholas Wolterstorff and Terence Cuneo's work on the philosophy of liturgy, I make the case that young children can and do participate fully in the liturgical rituals of Christian communities. I draw on the work of religious educators Sofia Cavaletti and Jerome Berryman to illustrate what the religious world of the child looks like, and to make the case that there are respects in which children are at an advantage over adults in participating in the liturgical life of the church

    The Museum of...Project: an interdisciplinary collaboration in the development and visualisation of a new museum concept

    This case study focuses on a design-led integrated project involving first year undergraduates from ten different courses in the School of Creative Enterprise at the London College of Communication. In 2008 approximately 350 students worked together in 24 mixed groups to develop a new concept for a museum. The project culminated in ‘The Museum of…. Trade Fair’, an event where the groups displayed their museum proposals and sold their ideas to a panel of judges from the museum sector. The project gave students the opportunity to work with colleagues from other disciplines and to combine theory with creative practice

    Exploring Preservice Teachers\u27 Affective Response to Disruptive Student Behavior in an Immersive Simulation Classroom

    This mixed methods study investigated changes in preservice teachers\u27 affective response to disruptive student behavior within the TeachLivE, immersive simulation classroom. Preservice teachers completed two simulation teaching sessions, during which they were exposed to five different disruptive student behavior events in each. All teaching sessions were recorded and post-processed using iMotions Affectiva Affdex software to collect data on preservice teachers\u27 emotion expression and valence during their teaching experiences. At the end of each teaching session, participants completed a self-report survey on their level of stress. Simulated teaching sessions were followed-up with video stimulated recall sessions where participants reflected on their feelings during the simulation. The goal of this research was to examine changes in preservice teachers\u27 affective response to stress, with repeated exposure to disruptive student behavior, to determine if it had a desensitization effect, potentially increasing emotional regulation ability and decreasing negative emotional responses. Descriptive statistics were used to examine differences in emotional valence by disruptive student events and teaching sessions. Paired samples t-tests were conducted to examine if mean differences existed in self-reported stress within and between teaching sessions. Additional qualitative analysis of video stimulated recall sessions was conducted using thematic analysis. Analysis revealed minimal difference in preservice teachers\u27 positive or negative emotional valence in response to disruptive student behavior events within and between teaching sessions. There was a statistically significant change in self-reported stress from the first simulated teaching session to the second. Analysis of video stimulated recall reflections revealed themes of cognitive dissonance, behavior-induced stress, and difficulty with virtual behavior management

    Umbilical artery tone in maternal obesity

    Background: The increasing prevalence of obesity constitutes a major health problem in obstetrics with implications for feto-maternal growth and wellbeing. This study investigated and compared the contractile properties of umbilical arteries excised from obese women, with those excised from women with a normal body mass index (BMI). Methods: Sections of umbilical artery were obtained from umbilical cord samples immediately after delivery and mounted for isometric recording in organ tissue baths under physiological conditions. Cumulative additions of 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and Prostaglandin F-2alpha (PgF2alpha) were added in the concentration range of 1 nmol/L to 10 micromol/L. Control vessels were exposed to Krebs physiological salt solution (PSS) only. The resultant effects of each drug addition were measured using the Powerlab hardware unit. Results: 5-HT exerted a significant effect on human umbilical artery tone at concentrations of 100 nmol/L, 1 micromol/L, and 10 micromol/L in normal (n = 5; P < 0.05) and obese ( n = 5; P < 0.05) women. The contractile effect was significantly greater in vessels from obese women {Mean Maximum Tension (MMT) = 4.2532 g} than in those from women of normal BMI (MMT = 2.97 g; P < 0.05). PgF2alpha exerted a significant contractile effect on vessels at 1 micromol/L and 10 micromol/L concentrations when compared with controls (n = 5; P < 0.05). There was a nonsignificant trend towards an enhanced tone response in vessels from obese women (MMT = 3.02 g; n = 5), in comparison to vessels from women of a normal BMI (MMT = 2.358 g; n = 5; P > 0.05). Conclusion: These findings support the hypothesis that endogenous regulation of umbilical artery tone is altered in association with maternal obesity. This may be linked to the cardiovascular effects of secretory products of adipose tissue, with implications for the feto-maternal circulation

    Inhibiting the oncogenic translation program is an effective therapeutic strategy in multiple myeloma

    Published in final edited form as: Sci Transl Med. 2017 May 10; 9(389). https://doi.org/10.1126/scitranslmed.aal2668.Multiple myeloma (MM) is a frequently incurable hematological cancer in which overactivity of MYC plays a central role, notably through up-regulation of ribosome biogenesis and translation. To better understand the oncogenic program driven by MYC and investigate its potential as a therapeutic target, we screened a chemically diverse small-molecule library for anti-MM activity. The most potent hits identified were rocaglate scaffold inhibitors of translation initiation. Expression profiling of MM cells revealed reversion of the oncogenic MYC-driven transcriptional program by CMLD010509, the most promising rocaglate. Proteome-wide reversion correlated with selective depletion of short-lived proteins that are key to MM growth and survival, most notably MYC, MDM2, CCND1, MAF, and MCL-1. The efficacy of CMLD010509 in mouse models of MM confirmed the therapeutic relevance of these findings in vivo and supports the feasibility of targeting the oncogenic MYC-driven translation program in MM with rocaglates
