    Fusing face and body display for Bi-modal emotion recognition: Single frame analysis and multi-frame post integration

    This paper presents an approach to automatic visual emotion recognition from two modalities: expressive face and body gesture. Pace and body movements are captured simultaneously using two separate cameras. For each face and body image sequence single "expressive" frames are selected manually for analysis and recognition of emotions. Firstly, individual classifiers are trained from individual modalities for mono-modal emotion recognition. Secondly, we fuse facial expression and affective body gesture information at the feature and at the decision-level. In the experiments performed, the emotion classification using the two modalities achieved a better recognition accuracy outperforming the classification using the individual facial modality. We further extend the affect analysis into a whole image sequence by a multi-frame post integration approach over the single frame recognition results. In our experiments, the post integration based on the fusion of face and body has shown to be more accurate than the post integration based on the facial modality only. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005

    Monte Carlo study of the Widom-Rowlinson fluid using cluster methods

    The Widom-Rowlinson model of a fluid mixture is studied using a new cluster algorithm that is a generalization of the invaded cluster algorithm previously applied to Potts models. Our estimate of the critical exponents for the two-component fluid are consistent with the Ising universality class in two and three dimensions.     Temporal Resolution In Preschool Children

    The purpose of this study was to examine temporal resolution in normal hearing pre-school children. Word recognition was evaluated in quiet and in spectrally identical continuous and interrupted noise at signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns) of 10, 0, and -10 dB. Sixteen children four to five years of age and eight adults participated. Performance decreased with decreasing S/N. At poorer S/Ns, participants demonstrated superior performance or a release from masking in the interrupted noise. Adults performed better than children, yet, the release from masking was equivalent. Collectively these findings are consistent with the notion that preschool children suffer from poorer processing efficiency rather than temporal resolution per se

    Gaugino Anomaly Mediated SUSY Breaking: phenomenology and prospects for the LHC

    We examine the supersymmetry phenomenology of a novel scenario of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking which we call Gaugino Anomaly Mediation, or inoAMSB. This is suggested by recent work on the phenomenology of flux compactified type IIB string theory. The essential features of this scenario are that the gaugino masses are of the anomaly-mediated SUSY breaking (AMSB) form, while scalar and trilinear soft SUSY breaking terms are highly suppressed. Renormalization group effects yield an allowable sparticle mass spectrum, while at the same time avoiding charged LSPs; the latter are common in models with negligible soft scalar masses, such as no-scale or gaugino mediation models. Since scalar and trilinear soft terms are highly suppressed, the SUSY induced flavor and CP-violating processes are also suppressed. The lightest SUSY particle is the neutral wino, while the heaviest is the gluino. In this model, there should be a strong multi-jet +etmiss signal from squark pair production at the LHC. We find a 100 fb^{-1} reach of LHC out to m_{3/2}\sim 118 TeV, corresponding to a gluino mass of \sim 2.6 TeV. A double mass edge from the opposite-sign/same flavor dilepton invariant mass distribution should be visible at LHC; this, along with the presence of short-- but visible-- highly ionizing tracks from quasi-stable charginos, should provide a smoking gun signature for inoAMSB.Comment: 30 pages including 14 .eps figure

    Testing the gaugino AMSB model at the Tevatron via slepton pair production

    Gaugino AMSB models-- wherein scalar and trilinear soft SUSY breaking terms are suppressed at the GUT scale while gaugino masses adopt the AMSB form-- yield a characteristic SUSY particle mass spectrum with light sleptons along with a nearly degenerate wino-like lightest neutralino and quasi-stable chargino. The left- sleptons and sneutrinos can be pair produced at sufficiently high rates to yield observable signals at the Fermilab Tevatron. We calculate the rate for isolated single and dilepton plus missing energy signals, along with the presence of one or two highly ionizing chargino tracks. We find that Tevatron experiments should be able to probe gravitino masses into the ~55 TeV range for inoAMSB models, which corresponds to a reach in gluino mass of over 1100 GeV.Comment: 14 pages including 6 .eps figure

    Does millet consumption contribute to raising blood hemoglobin levels compared to regular refined staples?: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Millets are recognized for their health and nutritional values, and the United Nations declared 2023 the International Year of Millets. Among the several health and nutritional benefits of millets, their impact on hemoglobin concentration is important since anemia is a major public health issue in many countries. To investigate the effect of millet (including sorghum) consumption on hemoglobin concentration in the blood, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Thirteen published studies featuring randomized control trials involving 590 individuals in the intervention group and 549 control individuals were eligible for the meta-analysis. The difference-in-differences analysis revealed highly significant (p < 0.01) positive effects of millet consumption on hemoglobin concentration, with an effect size of +0.68 standardized mean difference units. The change in hemoglobin concentration observed in the intervention group was +13.6%, which is statistically significant (p < 0.0005), compared to that in the control group, which was +4.8% and not statistically significant (p = 0.1362). In four studies, the consumption of millets in the intervention group demonstrated a change from mild anemia to normal status among children, whereas there was no change in the control group. The findings provide evidence that the consumption of millets can improve blood hemoglobin concentration, likely resulting from increased iron intake. Further research is needed involving the assessment of iron content and bioavailability to better understand the effect variation among millet types and the mechanisms involved

    Associations of plasma fibrinogen assays, C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 with previous myocardial infarction

    Background: The association of plasma fibrinogen with myocardial infarction (MI) may (like that of C-reactive protein, CRP) be a marker of subclinical inflammation, mediated by cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6). There are well- recognized discrepancies between commonly performed fibrinogen assays. Increased ratio of clottable fibrinogen to intact fibrinogen (measured by a recently developed immunoassay) has been proposed as a measure of hyperfunctional fibrinogen, and is elevated in acute MI.&lt;br/&gt; Objective: To compare the associations of intact fibrinogen and four routine fibrinogen assays (two von Clauss assays; one prothrombin-time derived; and one immunonephelometric) in a case-control study of previous MI. Patients/methods: Cases (n = 399) were recruited 3-9 months after their event; 413 controls were age- and sex-matched from the case-control study local population. Intact fibrinogen was measured in 50% of subjects. Results: All routine fibrinogen assays showed high intercorrelations (r = 0.82-0.93) and significant (P lt 0.0001) increased mean levels in cases vs. controls. These four routine assays correlated only moderately with intact fibrinogen (r = 0.45-0.62), while intact fibrinogen showed only a small, nonsignificant increase in cases vs. controls. Consequently, the ratio of each of the four routine assays to the intact fibrinogen assay was significantly higher (P lt 0.0003) in cases vs. controls. Each fibrinogen assay correlated with plasma levels of CRP and IL-6 (which were also elevated in cases vs. controls). Each routine fibrinogen assay remained significantly elevated in cases vs. controls after further adjustment for C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. Conclusions: These data provide evidence for acquired, increased hyperfunctional plasma fibrinogen in MI survivors, which is not associated with markers of inflammatory reactions. The causes and significance of these results remain to be established in prospective studies
