Persistence of Tall Fescue and Cattle Grazing Preference as Affected by Endophyte Status
Endophyte-infected (E+) grasses often exhibit increased survival, growth and resistance to herbivory compared to uninfected counterparts. Latch (1997) proposed a strategy for cultivar improvement of infecting elite cultivars with strains of Neotyphodium coenophialum that are non-toxic to livestock, but still able to convey the persistence advantage shown with wild-type, toxic endophyte. The strategy of re-infecting tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh.) cultivars with naturally occurring, non-ergot-producing endophytes appears promising for removing animal toxicity symptoms and retaining agronomic performance (Bouton et al., 2002; Hill et al., 2002). Spontaneous symmetry breaking: exact results for a biased random walk model of an exclusion process
It has been recently suggested that a totally asymmetric exclusion process
with two species on an open chain could exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking
in some range of the parameters defining its dynamics. The symmetry breaking is
manifested by the existence of a phase in which the densities of the two
species are not equal. In order to provide a more rigorous basis to these
observations we consider the limit of the process when the rate at which
particles leave the system goes to zero. In this limit the process reduces to a
biased random walk in the positive quarter plane, with specific boundary
conditions. The stationary probability measure of the position of the walker in
the plane is shown to be concentrated around two symmetrically located points,
one on each axis, corresponding to the fact that the system is typically in one
of the two states of broken symmetry in the exclusion process. We compute the
average time for the walker to traverse the quarter plane from one axis to the
other, which corresponds to the average time separating two flips between
states of broken symmetry in the exclusion process. This time is shown to
diverge exponentially with the size of the chain.Comment: 42 page
Vegetation and peat characteristics of restiad bogs on Chatham Island (Rekohu), New Zealand
Restiad bogs dominated by Sporadanthus traversii on Chatham Island, New Zealand, were sampled to correlate vegetation patterns and peat properties, and to compare with restiad systems dominated by Sporadanthus ferrugineus and Empodisma minus in the Waikato region, North Island, New Zealand. Classification and ordination resulted in five groups that reflected a disturbance gradient. The largest S. traversii group, which comprised plots from central, relatively intact bogs, had the lowest levels of total nitrogen (mean 1.20 mg cm-3), total phosphorus (mean 0.057 mg cm-3), total potassium (mean 0.083 mg cm-3), and available phosphorus (mean 18.6 Îźg cm-3). Modification by drainage, stock, and fires resulted in a decline of S. traversii and an increase of Gleichenia dicarpa fern cover, together with elevated peat nutrient levels and higher bulk density. Compared with peat dominated by Sporadanthus ferrugineus or Empodisma minus in relatively unmodified Waikato restiad bogs, Chatham Island peat under S. traversii has significantly higher total potassium, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, bulk density, and von Post decomposition indices, and significantly lower pH. Sporadanthus traversii and Empodisma minus have similar ecological roles in restiad bog development, occupying a relatively wide nutrient range, and regenerating readily from seed after fire. Despite differences in root morphology, S. traversii and E. minus are the major peat formers in raised restiad bogs on Chatham Island and in Waikato, respectively, and could be regarded as ecological equivalents
Stringy Instantons and Quiver Gauge Theories
We explore contributions to the 4D effective superpotential which arise from
Euclidean D3 branes (``instantons'') that intersect space-filling D-branes.
These effects can perturb the effective field theory on the space-filling
branes by nontrivial operators composed of charged matter fields, changing the
vacuum structure in a qualitative way in some examples. Our considerations are
exemplified throughout by a careful study of a fractional brane configuration

Central exclusive production of longlived gluinos at the LHC
We examine the possibility of producing gluino pairs at the LHC via the
exclusive reaction pp -> p+gluino+gluino+p in the case where the gluinos are
long lived. Such long lived gluinos are possible if the scalar super-partners
have large enough masses. We show that it may be possible to observe the
gluinos via their conversion to R-hadron jets and measure their mass to better
than 1% accuracy for masses below 350 GeV with 300/fb of data.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Minor corrections to version
Theory of continuum percolation III. Low density expansion
We use a previously introduced mapping between the continuum percolation
model and the Potts fluid (a system of interacting s-states spins which are
free to move in the continuum) to derive the low density expansion of the pair
connectedness and the mean cluster size. We prove that given an adequate
identification of functions, the result is equivalent to the density expansion
derived from a completely different point of view by Coniglio et al. [J. Phys A
10, 1123 (1977)] to describe physical clustering in a gas. We then apply our
expansion to a system of hypercubes with a hard core interaction. The
calculated critical density is within approximately 5% of the results of
simulations, and is thus much more precise than previous theoretical results
which were based on integral equations. We suggest that this is because
integral equations smooth out overly the partition function (i.e., they
describe predominantly its analytical part), while our method targets instead

Cancer Carepartners: Improving patients' symptom management by engaging informal caregivers
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous studies have found that cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy can effectively manage their own symptoms when given tailored advice. This approach, however, may challenge patients with poor performance status and/or emotional distress. Our goal is to test an automated intervention that engages a friend or family member to support a patient through chemotherapy.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>We describe the design and rationale of a randomized, controlled trial to assess the efficacy of 10 weeks of web-based caregiver alerts and tailored advice for helping a patient manage symptoms related to chemotherapy. The study aims to test the primary hypothesis that patients whose caregivers receive alerts and tailored advice will report less frequent and less severe symptoms at 10 and 14 weeks when compared to patients in the control arm; similarly, they will report better physical function, fewer outpatient visits and hospitalizations related to symptoms, and greater adherence to chemotherapy. 300 patients with solid tumors undergoing chemotherapy at two Veteran Administration oncology clinics reporting any symptom at a severity of âĽ4 and a willing informal caregiver will be assigned to either 10 weeks of automated telephonic symptom assessment (ATSA) alone, or 10 weeks of ATSA plus web-based notification of symptom severity and problem solving advice to their chosen caregiver. Patients and caregivers will be surveyed at intake, 10 weeks and 14 weeks. Both groups will receive standard oncology, hospice, and palliative care.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Patients undergoing chemotherapy experience many symptoms that they may be able to manage with the support of an activated caregiver. This intervention uses readily available technology to improve patient caregiver communication about symptoms and caregiver knowledge of symptom management. If successful, it could substantially improve the quality of life of veterans and their families during the stresses of chemotherapy without substantially increasing the cost of care.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p><a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00983892">NCT00983892</a></p

CAD in mammography: lesion-level versus case-level analysis of the effects of prompts on human decisions
Object: To understand decision processes in CAD-supported breast screening by analysing how prompts affect readersâ judgements of individual mammographic features (lesions). To this end we analysed hitherto unexamined details of reports completed by mammogram readers in an earlier evaluation of a CAD tool.
Material and methods: Assessments of lesions were extracted from 5,839 reports for 59 cancer cases. Statistical analyses of these data focused on what features readers considered when recalling a cancer case and how readers reacted to CAD prompts.
Results: About 13.5% of recall decisions were found to be caused by responses to features other than those indicating actual cancer. Effects of CAD: lesions were more likely to be examined if prompted; the presence of a prompt on a cancer increased the probability of both detection and recall especially for less accurate readers in subtler cases; lack of prompts made cancer features less likely to be detected; false prompts made non-cancer features more likely to be classified as cancer.
Conclusion: The apparent lack of impact reported for CAD in some studies is plausibly due to CAD systematically affecting readersâ identification of individual features, in a beneficial way for certain combinations of readers and features and a damaging way for others. Mammogram readers do not ignore prompts. Methodologically, assessing CAD by numbers of recalled cancer cases may be misleading
