Cardiovascular autonomic function and MCI in Parkinson's disease
Introduction: dysautonomic dysfunction and cognitive impairment represent the most disabling non-motor features of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Recent evidences suggest the association between Orthostatic Hypotension (OH) and PD-Dementia. However, little is known on the interactions between cardiovascular dysautonomia and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). We aimed to evaluate the association between cardiovascular dysautonomia and MCI in patients with PD. Methods: non-demented PD patients belonging to the PACOS cohort underwent a comprehensive instrumental neurovegetative assessment including the study of both parasympathetic and sympathetic function (30:15 ratio, Expiratory-Inspiratory ratio [E-I] and presence of Orthostatic Hypotension [OH]). Diagnosis of MCI was made according to the MDS criteria level II. Results: we enrolled 185 PD patients of whom 102 (55.1%) were men, mean age was 64.6 ± 9.7 years, mean disease duration of 5.6 ± 5.5 years with a mean UPDRS-ME score of 31.7 ± 10.9. MCI was diagnosed in 79 (42.7%) patients. OH was recorded in 52 (28.1%) patients, altered 30:15 ratio was recorded in 39 (24.1%) patients and an altered E-I ratio was found in 24 (19.1%) patients. Presence of MCI was associated with an altered 30:15 ratio (adjOR 2.83; 95%CI 1.25–6.40) but not with an altered E-I ratio, while OH was associated only with the amnestic MCI subgroup (OR 2.43; 95% CI 1.05–5.06). Mapping deuterated methanol toward L1544: I. Deuterium fraction and comparison with modeling
The study of deuteration in pre-stellar cores is important to understand the
physical and chemical initial conditions in the process of star formation. In
particular, observations toward pre-stellar cores of methanol and deuterated
methanol, solely formed on the surface of dust grains, may provide useful
insights on surface processes at low temperatures. Here we analyze maps of CO,
methanol, formaldehyde and their deuterated isotopologues toward a well-known
pre-stellar core. This study allows us to test current gas-dust chemical
models. Single-dish observations of CHOH, CHDOH, HCO,
H_2\,^{13}CO, HDCO, DCO and CO toward the prototypical pre-stellar
core L1544 were performed at the IRAM 30 m telescope. We analyze their column
densities, distributions, and compare these observations with gas-grain
chemical models. The maximum deuterium fraction derived for methanol is
[CHDOH]/[CHOH] 0.080.02, while the measured deuterium
fractions of formaldehyde at the dust peak are [HDCO]/[HCO]
0.030.02, [DCO]/[HCO] 0.040.03 and [DCO]/[HDCO]
1.20.3. Observations differ significantly from the predictions of
models, finding discrepancies between a factor of 10 and a factor of 100 in
most cases. It is clear though that to efficiently produce methanol on the
surface of dust grains, quantum tunneling diffusion of H atoms must be switched
on. It also appears that the currently adopted reactive desorption efficiency
of methanol is overestimated and/or that abstraction reactions play an
important role. More laboratory work is needed to shed light on the chemistry
of methanol, an important precursor of complex organic molecules in space.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
From risk-based health surveillance to health promotion: an evidence-based experience in a health care setting.
Health surveillance’s aim consists in different aspects: (i) to ensure worker’s health, (ii) to comply regulation, (iii) to detect health changes at their onset, (iv) to reduce cost, (v) to provide a fitness for job judgement, (vi) to provide a medical baseline and (vii) to be part of a preventive programme. Some of these aspects are perceived as benefits from the different stakeholders. Employers indicated as benefits worker’s satisfaction improvement, cost reduction, relationship improvement, early detection of health changes5. The study showed some other benefits: an improvement in worker’s satisfaction, an improvement in the relationship between stakeholders (even though based on qualitative data only), an early detection of health changes in few cases and a sickness absence reduction after influenza vaccination programme

Cox and Griffiths define as psychosocial risks at work “those aspects of the
planning, organization and management of work, which, along with their
environmental and social contexts, may affect mental and physical health of the
employees, directly or indirectly producing stress”. Therefore, a more effective
approach to occupational safety and security should include integrated risk
management through the identification of any work stress related problem. The

Induction of apoptosis in human retinoblastoma cells by topoisomerase inhibitors
PURPOSE:To examine the apoptotic effect induced in human retinoblastoma Y79 cells by camptothecin, etoposide, and amsacrine, to examine the effect of these drugs on the expression of many apoptosis-related modulators, and to test the antiapoptotic effect exerted by insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I).
METHODS:Morphologic features of apoptosis were demonstrated using acridine orange- ethidium bromide staining and electron microscopy. DNA fragmentation was determined by means of an in situ cell detection procedure (TdT-dUTP terminal nick-end labeling [TUNEL]) or by electrophoresis on agarose gels and was quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of apoptosis-related modulators was studied by western blot analysis. The processing of latent p53 was examined by means of pulse- chase analysis.
RESULTS:Camptothecin, etoposide, and amsacrine induced apoptosis in Y79 cells in a dose-dependent manner; camptothecin was the most efficacious compound. The effect, which was dependent on macromolecular synthesis, appeared after a lag of 8 hours and increased for as long as 24 hours. It was lower in cells treated with IGF-I, a potent mitogenic factor. Camptothecin and etoposide increased the p53 level after 4 hours of treatment, before the onset of apoptosis. This effect seemed to be a consequence of the conversion of latent p53 to one that is transcriptionally active. The drugs also induced an increase in p53-related proteins, such as p21, Bax, and IGF binding protein-3 (IGF-BP3), and caused a significant reduction of the Bcl-2 level. The latter effect was less evident in cells pretreated with IGF-I.
CONCLUSIONS:Topoisomerase inhibitors induce apoptosis in Y79 cells. This event is accompanied by a decrease in the expression of Bcl-2, a death antagonist, and an increase in that of Bax, a death agonist. A probable consequence of these modifications is the activation of ICE-like activity with degradation of poly-(adenosine diphosphate [ADP] ribose)-polymerase. Insulin-like growth factor-I exerts an antiapoptotic action in Y79 cells, and this function is most likely reduced by the overexpression of IGF-BP3 that is induced by drug treatment
Topological Quantum Phase Transitions in Topological Superconductors
In this paper we show that BF topological superconductors (insulators) exibit
phase transitions between different topologically ordered phases characterized
by different ground state degeneracy on manifold with non-trivial topology.
These phase transitions are induced by the condensation (or lack of) of
topological defects. We concentrate on the (2+1)-dimensional case where the BF
model reduce to a mixed Chern-Simons term and we show that the superconducting
phase has a ground state degeneracy and not . When the symmetry is
, namely when both gauge fields are compact, this model is
not equivalent to the sum of two Chern-Simons term with opposite chirality,
even if naively diagonalizable. This is due to the fact that U(1) symmetry
requires an ultraviolet regularization that make the diagonalization
impossible. This can be clearly seen using a lattice regularization, where the
gauge fields become angular variables. Moreover we will show that the phase in
which both gauge fields are compact is not allowed dynamically.Comment: 5 pages, no figure
Detection of lithium plating in li-ion cell anodes using realistic automotive fast-charge profiles
The widespread use of electric vehicles is nowadays limited by the “range anxiety” of the customers. The drivers’ main concerns are related to the kilometric range of the vehicle and to the charging time. An optimized fast-charge profile can help to decrease the charging time, without degrading the cell performance and reducing the cycle life. One of the main reasons for battery capacity fade is linked to the Lithium plating phenomenon. This work investigates two methodologies, i.e., three-electrode cell measurement and internal resistance evolution during charging, for detecting the Lithium plating conditions. From this preliminary analysis, it was possible to develop new Multi-Stage Constant-Current profiles, designed to improve the performance in terms of charging time and cells capacity retention with respect to a reference profile. Four new profiles were tested and compared to a reference. The results coming from the new profiles demonstrate a simultaneous improvement in terms of charging time and cycling life, showing the reliability of the implemented methodology in preventing Lithium plating

Pyothorax and pulmonary lymphomatoid granulomatosis in a cat
A 7-year-old female neutered British Short Hair cat was presented for further investigation and treatment of pleural effusion due to a possible pyothorax. Cytology and culture of the fluid identified pyothorax and a large mass/consolidated right caudal lung lobe was found on x-ray, ultrasound and CT scan. Lung lobectomy was performed and a diagnosis of pulmonary lymphomatoid granulomatosis (PLG) was confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Despite medical treatment the patient was euthanized due to progression of the disease and deterioration of her clinical signs. This is the second case of PLG reported in a cat and the first case of PLG with concurrent pyothorax. PLG, despite being very rare, should be added to the list of differential diagnoses for pyothorax and solitary lung masses in cats.Non
