MRI/TRUS data fusion for brachytherapy
BACKGROUND: Prostate brachytherapy consists in placing radioactive seeds for
tumour destruction under transrectal ultrasound imaging (TRUS) control. It
requires prostate delineation from the images for dose planning. Because
ultrasound imaging is patient- and operator-dependent, we have proposed to fuse
MRI data to TRUS data to make image processing more reliable. The technical
accuracy of this approach has already been evaluated. METHODS: We present work
in progress concerning the evaluation of the approach from the dosimetry
viewpoint. The objective is to determine what impact this system may have on
the treatment of the patient. Dose planning is performed from initial TRUS
prostate contours and evaluated on contours modified by data fusion. RESULTS:
For the eight patients included, we demonstrate that TRUS prostate volume is
most often underestimated and that dose is overestimated in a correlated way.
However, dose constraints are still verified for those eight patients.
CONCLUSIONS: This confirms our initial hypothesis
Finite geometries and diffractive orbits in isospectral billiards
Several examples of pairs of isospectral planar domains have been produced in
the two-dimensional Euclidean space by various methods. We show that all these
examples rely on the symmetry between points and blocks in finite projective
spaces; from the properties of these spaces, one can derive a relation between
Green functions as well as a relation between diffractive orbits in isospectral

AgapeZ1: a Large Amplification Microlensing Event or an Odd Variable Star Towards the Inner Bulge of M31
AgapeZ1 is the brightest and the shortest duration microlensing candidate
event found in the Agape data. It occured only 42" from the center of M31. Our
photometry shows that the half intensity duration of the event6 is 4.8 days and
at maximum brightness we measure a stellar magnitude of R=18.0 with B-R=0.80
mag color. A search on HST archives produced a single resolved star within the
projected event position error box. Its magnitude is R=22.Comment: 4 pages with 5 figure

Physical Sources of Scatter in the Tully-Fisher Relation
We analyze residuals from the Tully-Fisher relation for the emission-line
galaxies in the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, a broadly representative survey
designed to fairly sample the variety of galaxy morphologies and environments
in the local universe. For spirals brighter than M_R^i=-18, we find strong
correlations between Tully-Fisher residuals and both B-R color and EW(Halpha).
The extremes of the correlations are populated by Sa galaxies, which show
consistently red colors, and spirals with morphological peculiarities, which
are often blue. If we apply an EW(Halpha)-dependent or B-R color-dependent
correction term to the Tully-Fisher relation, the scatter in the relation no
longer increases from R to B to U but instead drops to a nearly constant level
close to the scatter we expect from measurement errors. We argue that these
results probably reflect correlated offsets in luminosity and color as a
function of star formation history. Broadening the sample in morphology and
luminosity, we find that most non-spirals brighter than M_R^i=-18 follow the
same correlations as do spirals, albeit with greater scatter. However, the
color and EW(Halpha) correlations do not apply to galaxies fainter than
M_R^i=-18 or to emission-line S0 galaxies with anomalous gas kinematics. For
the dwarf galaxy population, the parameters controlling Tully-Fisher residuals
are instead related to the degree of recent disturbance: overluminous dwarfs
have higher rotation curve asymmetries, brighter U-band effective surface
brightnesses, and shorter gas consumption timescales than their underluminous
counterparts. As a result, sample selection strongly affects the measured
faint-end slope of the Tully-Fisher relation. Passively evolving, rotationally

Universal conductance fluctuations in epitaxial GaMnAs ferromagnets: structural and spin disorder
Mesoscopic transport measurements reveal a large effective phase coherence
length in epitaxial GaMnAs ferromagnets, contrary to usual 3d-metal
ferromagnets. Universal conductance fluctuations of single nanowires are
compared for epilayers with a tailored anisotropy. At large magnetic fields,
quantum interferences are due to structural disorder only, and an unusual
behavior related to hole-induced ferromagnetism is evidenced, for both quantum
interferences and decoherence. At small fields, phase coherence is shown to
persist down to zero field, even in presence of magnons, and an additional spin
disorder contribution to quantum interferences is observed under domain walls

Diffusion over a saddle with a Langevin equation
The diffusion problem over a saddle is studied using a multi-dimensional
Langevin equation. An analytical solution is derived for a quadratic potential
and the probability to pass over the barrier deduced. A very simple solution is
given for the one dimension problem and a general scheme is shown for higher

Data Predictive Control for Peak Power Reduction
Decisions on how best to optimize today\u27s energy systems operations are becoming ever so complex and conflicting such that model-based predictive control algorithms must play a key role. However, learning dynamical models of energy consuming systems such as buildings, using grey/white box approaches is very cost and time prohibitive due to its complexity. This paper presents data-driven methods for making control-oriented model for peak power reduction in buildings. Specifically, a data predictive control with regression trees (DPCRT) algorithm, is presented. DPCRT is a finite receding horizon method, using which the building operator can optimally trade off peak power reduction against thermal comfort without having to learn white/grey box models of the systems dynamics. We evaluate the performance of our method using a DoE commercial reference virtual test-bed and show how it can be used for learning predictive models with 90% accuracy, and for achieving 8.6% reduction in peak power and costs
A compactness theorem for scalar-flat metrics on manifolds with boundary
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. This paper is
concerned with the set of scalar-flat metrics which are in the conformal class
of g and have the boundary as a constant mean curvature hypersurface. We prove
that this set is compact for dimensions greater than or equal to 7 under the
generic condition that the trace-free 2nd fundamental form of the boundary is
