High-intensity interval training: optimizing oxygen consumption and time to exhaustion taking advantage of the exponential reconstitution behaviour of D’
Purpose: Accumulating the time near maximum aerobic power (V ˙ O 2max) is considered to be the most effective way to improve aerobic capacity. The aims of this study were: (1) to verify whether postponing the first recovery interval improves time to exhaustion during a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) test, and (2) to verify whether a HIIT protocol with decreasing interval duration (HIDIT) is more effective in accumulating time near V ˙ O 2max compared with two classical protocols with short intervals (SIHIIT) and long intervals (LIHIIT). Methods: Nine active males (35 ± 11 years, V ˙ O 2max 52 ± 5 mL·min−1·kg−1) performed a graded exercise test on an athletic track. Critical velocity and D’ were estimated from three to five high-intensity trials to exhaustion. Then, the subjects performed three trials with a single recovery interval after 30 s (Rec30s), after 3 min (Rec3min) and after exhaustion (RecTlim) to verify whether postponing the first recovery interval enhances the time to exhaustion. Finally, the subjects performed the three HIIT protocols mentioned above. Results: The time to exhaustion was significantly greater in RecTlim (464 ± 67 s) than in Rec3min (388 ± 48 s) (p 0.0001). Additionally, it was significantly greater in Rec3min than in Rec30s (p = 0.0247). Furthermore, the time accumulated near V ˙ O 2max was significantly longer in HIDIT (998 ± 129 s) than in SIHIIT (678 ± 116 s) (p = 0.003) and LIHIIT (673 ± 115 s) (p < 0.031). Conclusions: During the trials, postponing the first recovery interval was effective in improving the time to exhaustion. Moreover, HIDIT was effective in prolonging the time near V ˙ O 2max
The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey V : The Virgo Cluster (I)
We present 21 cm observations of a 10 2 degree region in the Virgo
cluster, obtained as part of the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey. 289 sources
are detected over the full redshift range (-2,000 + 20,000
km/s) with 95 belonging to the cluster ( 3,000 km/s). We combine
our observations with data from the optically selected Virgo Cluster Catalogue
(VCC) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Most of our detections can be
clearly associated with a unique optical counterpart, and 30% of the cluster
detections are new objects fainter than the VCC optical completeness limit. 7
detections may have no optical counterpart and we discuss the possible origins
of these objects. 7 detections appear associated with early-type galaxies. We
perform HI stacking on the HI-undetected galaxies listed in the VCC in this
region and show that they must have significantly less gas than those actually
detected in HI. Galaxies undetected in HI in the cluster appear to be really
devoid of gas, in contrast to a sample of field galaxies from ALFALFA.Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures, 4 table
Fumasep FAA-3-PK-130: Exploiting multinuclear solid-state NMR to shed light on undisclosed structural properties
Fumasep FAA-3-PK-130 is considered the state-of-the-art among the different commercially available Anion Exchange Membranes (AEMs). It is produced by Fumatech GmbH as a cost-effective blend of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and poly (phenylene oxide) (PPO) characterized by high hydroxyl ions conductivity, high thermal and chemical resistance, and high dimensional stability. Nevertheless, the chemical structure of the anion exchange sites and their contents were unknown so far. In this paper, we report a detailed structural characterization of Fumasep FAA-3-PK-130 to identify the material phase composition, the nature of the conducting moieties and their interactions with the adsorbed water molecules. A complete phase segregation between PPO and PEEK was found on a micrometric scale from 1H spinlattice relaxation times and micro-ATR analysis. Multinuclear (1H, 13C, 19F) Solid-State NMR spectra, combined with nuclear spin relaxation measurements, allowed us to identify the anion exchange moiety with benzyl-ethyldimethylammonium. This is present as functionalizing group of PPO monomers with a functionalization degree of about 40 %. Moreover, the mobility of water absorbed in the membrane was studied by 2H Solid-State NMR on samples hydrated with deuterated water under controlled relative humidity: at low relative moisture, two different types of environments were found for water molecules, compatible with two types of water-ion clusters, one of which contains water molecules with a restricted mobility, limited to C2 jumps, due to strong interactions with ions
CULTURAL HERITAGE DIGITAL PRESERVATION THROUGH AI-DRIVEN ROBOTICS
This paper introduces a novel methodology developed for creating 3D models of archaeological artifacts that reduces the time and effort required by operators. The approach uses a simple vision system mounted on a robotic arm that follows a predetermined path around the object to be reconstructed. The robotic system captures different viewing angles of the object and assigns 3D coordinates corresponding to the robot's pose, allowing it to adjust the trajectory to accommodate objects of various shapes and sizes. The angular displacement between consecutive acquisitions can also be fine-tuned based on the desired final resolution. This flexible approach is suitable for different object sizes, textures, and levels of detail, making it ideal for both large volumes with low detail and small volumes with high detail. The recorded images and assigned coordinates are fed into a constrained implementation of the structure-from-motion (SfM) algorithm, which uses the scale-invariant features transform (SIFT) method to detect key points in each image. By utilising a priori knowledge of the coordinates and SIFT algorithm, low processing time can be ensured while maintaining high accuracy in the final reconstruction.
The use of a robotic system to acquire images at a pre-defined pace ensures high repeatability and consistency across different 3D reconstructions, eliminating operator errors in the workflow. This approach not only allows for comparisons between similar objects but also provides the ability to track structural changes of the same object over time.
Overall, the proposed methodology provides a significant improvement over current photogrammetry techniques by reducing the time and effort required to create 3D models while maintaining a high level of accuracy and repeatability
Nerve growth factor and bromocriptine: a sequential therapy for human bromocriptine-resistant prolactinomas.
Nerve growth factor (NGF) administration to athymic mice with transplanted human bromocriptine-resistant prolactinoma, results in the expression of dopamine D-2 receptors in the tumour and restores sensitivity to subsequent treatment with bromocriptine, which then produces normalisation of plasma prolactin and tumour regression. Sequential administration of NGF and bromocriptine thus may be a promising therapy for patients refractory to bromocriptine
Infrared Search for Young Stars in HI High-velocity Clouds
We have searched the IRAS Point Source Catalog and HIRES maps for young
stellar objects (YSOs) in the direction of five \HI high-velocity clouds
(HVCs). In agreement with optical searches in the halo, no evidence was found
for extensive star-forming activity inside the high-latitude HVCs.
Specifically, we have found no signs of star formation or YSOs in the direction
of the A IV cloud or in the very-high-velocity clouds HVC~110-7-465 and
HVC~114-10-440. We have identified only one young star in the direction of the
M~I.1 cloud, which shows almost perfect alignment with a knot of \HI emission.
Because of the small number of early-type stars observed in the halo, the
probability for such a positional coincidence is low; thus, this young star
appears to be physically associated with the M~I.1 cloud. We have also
identified a good YSO candidate in the \HI shell-like structure observed in the
core region of the low-latitude cloud complex H (HVC~131+1-200). This region
could be a supernova remnant with several other YSO candidates formed along the
shock front produced by the explosion. In agreement with recent theoretical
estimates, these results point to a low but significant star-formation rate in
intermediate and high Galactic latitude HVCs. For M~I.1 in particular, we
estimate that the efficiency of the star-formation process is M(YSO)/M(\HI)\ga
10^{-4}-10^{-3} by mass. Such efficiency is sufficient to account for (a) the
existence of the few young blue stars whose ages imply that they were born in
the Galactic halo, and (b) the nonprimordial metallicities inferred for some

Effects of 12-week combined training versus high intensity interval training on cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition and fat metabolism in obese male adults
Background: /Objectives: A weekly combination of a high volume of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) with a low volume of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) provides important improvements in body composition and physical capacities in individuals with obesity. However, previous studies did not determine the weekly proportions of HIIT and MICT a priori. This study aimed to investigate changes in body composition, physical capacities and the fat oxidation rate in obese male adults by comparing a combination of MICT and HIIT, called combined training (COMB), with HIIT for a 12-week period. Methods: Thirty-four obese male adults (mean age: 39.4 ± 7.0 y; mean body mass index [BMI] 34.0 ± 4.2 kg m−2) participated in this study (n = 18 for COMB, n = 16 HIIT), attending ∼ 36 training sessions. The COMB group performed 3 repetitions of 2 min at 95% of peak oxygen uptake (V'O2 peak) (e.g., HIIT ≤20%), followed by 30 min at 60% of VO2 peak (e.g., MICT ≥80%). The HIIT group performed 5–7 repetitions of 2 min at 95% of VO2 peak. At baseline (PRE) and at the end of the training period (POST), body composition, VO2 peak, and the fat oxidation rate were measured. The two training programs were equivalent in caloric expenditure. Results: At POST, body mass (BM) and fat mass (FM) decreased by a mean of 3.09 ± 3.21 kg and 3.90 ± 2.40 kg, respectively (P < 0.05), in both groups and V'O2 peak increased in both groups by a mean of 0.47 ± 0.34 L min−1 (P < 0.05). The maximal fat oxidation rate increased similarly in both groups from 0.32 ± 0.05 to 0.36 ± 0.06 g min−1 (P < 0.05). Conclusion: COMB training represents a viable alternative to HIIT to improve anthropometric characteristics, physical capacities and fat oxidation in obese male adults
AGC 226067: A possible interacting low-mass system
We present Arecibo, GBT, VLA and WIYN/pODI observations of the ALFALFA source
AGC 226067. Originally identified as an ultra-compact high velocity cloud and
candidate Local Group galaxy, AGC 226067 is spatially and kinematically
coincident with the Virgo cluster, and the identification by multiple groups of
an optical counterpart with no resolved stars supports the interpretation that
this systems lies at the Virgo distance (D=17 Mpc). The combined observations
reveal that the system consists of multiple components: a central HI source
associated with the optical counterpart (AGC 226067), a smaller HI-only
component (AGC 229490), a second optical component (AGC 229491), and extended
low surface brightness HI. Only ~1/4 of the single-dish HI emission is
associated with AGC 226067; as a result, we find M_HI/L_g ~ 6 Msun/Lsun, which
is lower than previous work. At D=17 Mpc, AGC 226067 has an HI mass of 1.5 x
10^7 Msun and L_g = 2.4 x 10^6 Lsun, AGC 229490 (the HI-only component) has
M_HI = 3.6 x 10^6 Msun, and AGC 229491 (the second optical component) has L_g =
3.6 x 10^5 Lsun. The nature of this system of three sources is uncertain: AGC
226067 and AGC 229490 may be connected by an HI bridge, and AGC 229490 and AGC
229491 are separated by only 0.5'. The current data do not resolve the HI in
AGC 229490 and its origin is unclear. We discuss possible scenarios for this
system of objects: an interacting system of dwarf galaxies, accretion of
material onto AGC 226067, or stripping of material from AGC 226067.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 6 pages, 4 figure
