    Quaternion-based non-singular terminal sliding mode control for a satellite-mounted space manipulator

    In this paper, a robust control solution for a satellite equipped with a robotic manipulator is presented. First, the dynamic model of the system is derived based on quaternions to describe the evolution of the attitude of the base satellite. Then, a non-singular terminal sliding mode controller that employs quaternions for attitude control, is proposed for concurrently handling all the degrees of freedom of the space manipulator. Moreover, an additional adaptive term is embedded in the controller to estimate the upper bounds of disturbances and uncertainties. The result is a resilient solution able to withstand unmodelled dynamics and interactions. Lyapunov theory is used to prove the stability of the controller and numerical simulations allow assessing performance and fuel efficiency

    A mountainous area in western Sicily, where relic wood vegetation is still preserved notwithstanding past and present human pressure, is here analysed in order to prepare a checklist of its vascular flora. Field investigations allowed to compile a floristic inventory including 601 infrageneric taxa belonging to 304 genera and 80 families. Some remarks on the biological and chorological spectra are presented, and some measures to protect flora and vegetation are suggested, too

    An effective assessment of the static and dynamic structural behavior of historical monuments requires the development and validation of suitable adaptive structural models using high-quality experimental data acquired with an effectively continuous and distributed monitoring. Furthermore, the adaptive strategy allows an efficient evaluation of the health status and of the evolution along the time of a historical monument, providing relevant information to plan appropriate actions for its long-term preservation. The Trajan Arch in Benevento chosen as a case of study to develop and apply this new adaptive strategy in cultural heritage conservation. The paper, after a description of the innovative monitoring system, based on state-of-the-art mechanical sensors, presents and discusses the results of two tests, comparing the measurements with the predictions of an adaptive structural FEM model developed for the dynamical simulation of the Trajan Arch

    Molecular dynamics analysis of the structural properties of the transglutaminases of Kutzneria albida and Streptomyces mobaraensis

    The microbial transglutaminase (TGase) from Streptomyces mobaraensis (MTGase) is widely used for industrial applications. However, in the last decades, TGases from other bacteria have been described. We focused our attention on TGase, from Kutzneria albida (KalbTGase), recently characterized as more selective than MTGase and proposed for applications in drug delivery. By comparison of the crystallographic structures, the volume of the catalytic site results smaller in KalbTGase. We compared KalbTGase and MTGase structural flexibility by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at different conditions. KalbTGase is more rigid than MTGase at 300 K, but the catalytic site has a preserved conformation in both structures. Preliminary studies at higher temperatures suggest that KalbTGase acquires enhanced conformational flexibility far from the active site region. The volume of the catalytic active site pocket of KalbTGase at room temperature is smaller than that of MTGase, and decreases at 335 K, remaining stable after further temperature increase. On the contrary, in MTGase the pocket volume continues to decrease as the temperature increases. Overall, the results of our study suggest that at room temperature the enhanced specificity of KalbTGase could be related to a more closed catalytic pocket and lower flexibility than MTGase. Moreover, by preliminary results at higher temperature, KalbTGase structural flexibility suggests an adaptability to different substrates not recognized at room temperature. Lower adaptability of MTGase at higher temperature with a reduction of the catalytic pocket, instead, suggests a reduction of its activity

    (Dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine)(glycinato)copper(II) perchlorate: A novel DNA-intercalator with anti-proliferative activity against thyroid cancer cell lines

    A novel copper(II) heteroleptic complex of dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine (dppz) and glycinato (gly) as chelating ancillary ligand, [Cu(dppz)(gly)]ClO4 (1), was synthesized and characterized. X-ray crystallography revealed that the coordination geometry of the cationic [Cu(dppz)(gly)]+ unit is hexacoordinated and shows a distorted octahedral coordination geometry in the solid state, with the N,N and N,O chelating atoms of dppz and glycinato, respectively, in the square plane and in which the planar units are connected in a monodimensional polymeric array by the apical copper coordination of the second carboxylic oxygen atom. Biological assays showed that 1 exhibits a remarkable anti-proliferative activity against the two human anaplastic thyroid cancer cell lines 8505c (BrafV600E/V600E) and SW1736 (BrafWT/V600E), in a dose- and time-dependent manner. In details, the IC50 after 48 h of drug exposure was 2.86±0.54 μM for SW1736 and 1.05±0.48 μM for 8505c. On the other hand, the IC50 shown by cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cisplatin) against the same cell lines was 2.50±0.40 μM and 6.03±0.78 μM, respectively. Optical microscopy observations, after 48 h of treatment, showed morphological cell changes typical of apoptosis, confirmed by DNA ladder assays. DNA interaction studies, performed by UV absorption spectrophotometry, circular dichroism and viscosimetry, clearly showed that [Cu(dppz)(gly)]ClO4 is a DNA-intercalator, with a DNA-binding constant, Kb, of 2.1×106 M−1, suggesting that the mechanism of the cytotoxic activity can be related to its DNA-binding

    Radial neck fractures in children: results when open reduction is indicated

    BACKGROUND: Radial neck fractures in children are rare, representing 5% of all elbow pediatric fractures. Most are minimally displaced or nondisplaced. Severely displaced or angulated radial neck fractures often have poor outcomes, even after open reduction, and case series reported in literature are limited. The aim of the study is to analyze the outcomes of patients with a completely displaced and angulated fracture who underwent open reduction when closed reduction failed. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2009, 195 patients with radial neck fractures were treated in our institute. Twenty-four cases satisfied all the inclusion criteria and were evaluated clinically and radiologically at a mean follow-up of 7 years. At follow-up, the carrying angle in full elbow extension and the range of motion of the elbow and forearm were measured bilaterally. We recorded clinical results as good, fair, or poor according to the range of movement and the presence of pain. Radiographic evaluation documented the size of the radial head, the presence of avascular necrosis, premature physeal closure, and cubitus valgus. RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed that fair and poor results are directly correlated with loss of pronation-supination (P=0.001), reduction of elbow flexion-extension (P=0.001), increase of elbow valgus angle (P=0.002), necrosis of the radial head (P=0.001), premature physeal closure (P=0.01), and associated lesions (olecranon fracture with or without dislocation of the elbow) (P=0.002). DISCUSSION: In our cases, residual radial head deformity due to premature closure of the growth plate and avascular necrosis were correlated with a functional deficit. Associated elbow injury was coupled with a negative prognosis. In our series, about 25% of patients had fair and 20% had poor results. Outcomes were good in 55% and felt to represent a better outcome than if the fracture remained nonanatomically reduced with residual angulation and/or displacement of the radial head. This study reports the largest series of these fractures with a combination of significant angulation and displacement of the fracture requiring open reduction. We feel that open reduction is indicated when the head of the radius is completely displaced and without contact with the rim of the metaphysis
