Requirements for optimization of electrodes and electrolyte for the iron/chromium Redox flow cell
Improved catalyzation techniques that included a pretreatment of carbon substrate and provided normalized carbon surface for uniform gold deposition were developed. This permits efficient use of different batches of carbon felt materials which initially vary significantly in their physical and surface chemical properties, as well as their electrochemical behavior. Further modification of gold impregnation technique gave the best performing electrodes. In addition to the linear sweep voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry was used to determine the effects of different activation procedures on the Cr(3)/Cr(2) Redox and H2 evolution reactions. The roles of carbon, gold and lead in the overall Redox cycle are identified. The behavior of the electrodes at both normal battery operating potentials and more extreme potentials is discussed preparing efficient and stable electrodes for the energy storage battery is implicated
Single crystal tubes of beta alumina
Edge-defined, film-fed growth process allows both tubular shapes and single crystallinity to be achieved. Beta alumina in single crystal form makes possible membranes with improved conductivities. Single crystal membranes also eliminate problems associated with electrical short circuiting of membrane due to possible sodium metal diffusion
Resonant hyper-Raman scattering in spherical quantum dots
A theoretical model of resonant hyper-Raman scattering by an ensemble of
spherical semiconductor quantum dots has been developed. The electronic
intermediate states are described as Wannier-Mott excitons in the framework of
the envelope function approximation. The optical polar vibrational modes of the
nanocrystallites (vibrons) and their interaction with the electronic system are
analized with the help of a continuum model satisfying both the mechanical and
electrostatic matching conditions at the interface. An explicit expression for
the hyper-Raman scattering efficiency is derived, which is valid for incident
two-photon energy close to the exciton resonances. The dipole selection rules
for optical transitions and Fr\"ohlich-like exciton-lattice interaction are
derived: It is shown that only exciton states with total angular momentum
and vibrational modes with angular momentum contribute to the
hyper-Raman scattering process. The associated exciton energies, wavefunctions,
and vibron frequencies have been obtained for spherical CdSe zincblende-type
nanocrystals, and the corresponding hyper-Raman scattering spectrum and
resonance profile are calculated. Their dependence on the dot radius and the
influence of the size distribution on them are also discussed.Comment: 12 pages REVTeX (two columns), 2 tables, 8 figure

Electroreflectance spectroscopy in self-assembled quantum dots: lens symmetry
Modulated electroreflectance spectroscopy of semiconductor
self-assembled quantum dots is investigated. The structure is modeled as dots
with lens shape geometry and circular cross section. A microscopic description
of the electroreflectance spectrum and optical response in terms of an external
electric field () and lens geometry have been considered. The field
and lens symmetry dependence of all experimental parameters involved in the
spectrum have been considered. Using the effective mass formalism
the energies and the electronic states as a function of and dot
parameters are calculated. Also, in the framework of the strongly confined
regime general expressions for the excitonic binding energies are reported.
Optical selection rules are derived in the cases of the light wave vector
perpendicular and parallel to . Detailed calculation of the Seraphin
coefficients and electroreflectance spectrum are performed for the InAs and
CdSe nanostructures. Calculations show good agreement with measurements
recently performed on CdSe/ZnSe when statistical distribution on size is
considered, explaining the main observed characteristic in the
electroreflectance spectra
Orientation of propagating crack paths emanating from fretting-fatigue contact problems
[EN] In this work, the orientation and propagation of cracks in fretting fatigue problems is analyzed numerically using the finite element method (FEM) and the extended finite element method (X- FEM). The analysis is performed by means of a 2D model of a complete-contact fretting problem, consisting of two square indenters pressed onto a specimen subjected to cyclic fatigue. For the simulation, we allow for crack face contact in the implementation during the corresponding parts of the fatigue cycle. The problem is highly nonlinear and non-proportional and we make use of the so-called minimum shear stress range orientation criterion, min(Delta tau), proposed by the authors in previous works. This criterion is introduced to predict the crack path in each step of the crack growth simulation. The objective of the work is to detect which is the relevant parameter affecting the crack path orientation. A parametric study of some a priori relevant magnitudes is carried out, such as normal load on the indenters, bulk load on the specimen, stress ratio and relative stiffness of the indenter and specimen materials. Contrary to previous expectations, it is shown that the relative magnitude of the applied loads has no significant effect. However, it is found that the stiffness of the indenter material with respect to the specimen material has the greatest effect. A simple explanation of this behavior is also provided. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support given by the SGPI of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Project DPI2013-46641-R).Giner Maravilla, E.; Diaz-Alvarez, J.; Marco Esteban, M.; Miguélez, MH.
