    Precision Measurements of the Semileptonic Charm Decays D0→π−ℓ+ÎœD^0 \to \pi^- \ell^+ \nu and D0→K−ℓ+ÎœD^0 \to K^- \ell^+ \nu

    We investigate the decays D0→π−ℓ+ÎœD^0\to\pi^-\ell^+\nu and D0→K−ℓ+ÎœD^0\to K^-\ell^+ \nu, where ℓ\ell is ee or ÎŒ\mu, using approximately 7 fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of data collected with the CLEO III detector. We find R0≡B(D0→π−e+Îœ)/B(D0→K−e+Îœ)=0.082±0.006±0.005R_0\equiv {\cal B}(D^0\to \pi^-e^+\nu)/{\cal B}(D^0\to K^-e^+\nu)= 0.082 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.005. Fits to the kinematic distributions of the data provide parameters describing the form factor of each mode. Combining the form factor results and R0R_0 gives ∣f+π(0)∣2∣Vcd∣2/∣f+K(0)∣2∣Vcs∣2=0.038−0.007−0.003+0.006+0.005|f^{\pi}_{+}(0)|^2 |V_{cd}|^2/|f^K_{+}(0)|^2 |V_{cs}|^2 = 0.038^{+0.006+0.005}_{-0.007-0.003}.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, talk given at DPF'04, UC Riverside, C

    Effect of thermal exposure, forming, and welding on high-temperature, dispersion-strengthened aluminum alloy: Al-8Fe-1V-2Si

    The feasibility of applying conventional hot forming and welding methods to high temperature aluminum alloy, Al-8Fe-1V-2Si (FVS812), for structural applications and the effect of thermal exposure on mechanical properties were determined. FVS812 (AA8009) sheet exhibited good hot forming and resistance welding characteristics. It was brake formed to 90 deg bends (0.5T bend radius) at temperatures greater than or equal to 390 C (730 F), indicating the feasibility of fabricating basic shapes, such as angles and zees. Hot forming of simple contoured-flanged parts was demonstrated. Resistance spot welds with good static and fatigue strength at room and elevated temperatures were readily produced. Extended vacuum degassing during billet fabrication reduced porosity in fusion and resistance welds. However, electron beam welding was not possible because of extreme degassing during welding, and gas-tungsten-arc welds were not acceptable because of severely degraded mechanical properties. The FVS812 alloy exhibited excellent high temperature strength stability after thermal exposures up to 315 C (600 F) for 1000 h. Extended billet degassing appeared to generally improve tensile ductility, fatigue strength, and notch toughness. But the effects of billet degassing and thermal exposure on properties need to be further clarified.     In this letter we introduce a possible measure of the size of CP violation in the Standard Model and its extensions, based on quantities invariant under the change of weak quark basis.     We present the complete flavor SU(3) decomposition of decay amplitudes for decays of the triplet (B^+_u, B^0_d, B^0_s) of B mesons nonleptonically into two pseudoscalar mesons.     Determination of CKM phases through rigid polygons of flavor SU(3) amplitudes

    Some new methods for the extraction of CKM phases α\alpha and Îł\gamma using flavor SU(3) symmetry have been suggested through the construction of rigid polygons in the complex plane with sides equal to the decay amplitudes of B mesons into two mesons belonging to the light (charmless) pseudoscalar octet. These rigid polygons incorporate all the possible amplitude triangles and, being overdetermined, also serve as consistency checks and in estimating the rates of some decay modes. The same techniques also lead to numerous useful amplitude triangles when octet-singlet mixing has been taken into account and nearly physical η,ηâ€Č\eta,\eta' are used.Comment: A few detailed explanations added, some rearrangement of sections and a few minor changes in notation. 19 pages, 1 PostScript figure, uses psfig.st

    On a zero speed sensitive cellular automaton

    Using an unusual, yet natural invariant measure we show that there exists a sensitive cellular automaton whose perturbations propagate at asymptotically null speed for almost all configurations. More specifically, we prove that Lyapunov Exponents measuring pointwise or average linear speeds of the faster perturbations are equal to zero. We show that this implies the nullity of the measurable entropy. The measure m we consider gives the m-expansiveness property to the automaton. It is constructed with respect to a factor dynamical system based on simple "counter dynamics". As a counterpart, we prove that in the case of positively expansive automata, the perturbations move at positive linear speed over all the configurations

    Factorization Contributions and the Breaking of the ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2 Rule in Weak ΛNρ\Lambda N\rho and ÎŁNρ\Sigma N\rho Couplings

    We compute the modified factorization contributions to the Λ→Nρ\Lambda\rightarrow N\rho and Σ→Nρ\Sigma\rightarrow N\rho couplings and demonstrate that these contributions naturally include ΔI=3/2\Delta I=3/2 terms which are comparable (≃0.4\simeq 0.4 to −0.8-0.8 times) in magnitude to the corresponding ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2 terms. As a consequence, we conclude that models which treat vector meson exchange contributions to the weak conversion process ΛN→NN\Lambda N\rightarrow NN assuming such weak couplings to satisfy the ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2 rule are unlikely to be reliable.Comment: 13 pages, uses REVTEX Entire manuscript available as a ps file at http://www.physics.adelaide.edu.au/theory/home.html .     τ→ρππΜ\tau\to\rho\pi\pi\nu decays

    Effective chiral theory of mesons is applied to study the four decay modes of τ→ρππΜ\tau\to\rho\pi\pi\nu. Theoretical values of the branching ratios are in agreement with the data. The theory predicts that the a1a_{1} resonance plays a dominant role in these decays. There is no new parameter in this study.Comment: 12 pages and one figur

    Determining the Weak Phase Îł\gamma From Charged BB Decays

    A quadrangle relation is shown to be satisfied by the amplitudes for B+→π0K+, π+K0, ηK+B^+ \to \pi^0 K^+,~\pi^+ K^0,~\eta K^+, and ηâ€ČK+\eta' K^+. By comparison with the corresponding relation satisfied by B−B^- decay amplitudes, it is shown that the relative phases of all the amplitudes can be determined up to discrete ambiguities. Making use of an SU(3) relation between amplitudes contributing to the above decays and those contributing to B±→π±π0B^{\pm} \to \pi^{\pm} \pi^0, it is then shown that one can determine the weak phase γ≡Arg(Vub∗Vcb/Vus∗Vcs)\gamma \equiv {\rm Arg} (V_{ub}^* V_{cb}/V_{us}^* V_{cs}), where VV is the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix describing the charge-changing weak interactions between the quarks (u,c,t)(u,c,t) and (d,s,b)(d,s,b).Comment: 16 pages, latex, 7 uuencoded figure

    Seabird Bycatch in Pelagic Longline Fisheries Is Grossly Underestimated when Using Only Haul Data

    Hundreds of thousands of seabirds are killed each year as bycatch in longline fisheries. Seabirds are predominantly caught during line setting but bycatch is generally recorded during line hauling, many hours after birds are caught. Bird loss during this interval may lead to inaccurate bycatch information. In this 15 year study, seabird bycatch was recorded during both line setting and line hauling from four fishing regions: Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, Coral Sea and central Pacific Ocean. Over 43,000 albatrosses, petrels and skuas representing over 25 species were counted during line setting of which almost 6,000 seabirds attempted to take the bait. Bait-taking interactions were placed into one of four categories. (i) The majority (57%) of bait-taking attempts were “unsuccessful” involving seabirds that did not take the bait nor get caught or hooked. (ii) One-third of attempts were “successful” with seabirds removing the bait while not getting caught. (iii) One-hundred and seventy-six seabirds (3% of attempts) were observed being “caught” during line setting, with three albatross species – Laysan (Phoebastria immutabilis), black-footed (P. nigripes) and black-browed (Thalassarche melanophrys)– dominating this category. However, of these, only 85 (48%) seabird carcasses were retrieved during line hauling. Most caught seabirds were hooked through the bill. (iv) The remainder of seabird-bait interactions (7%) was not clearly observed, but likely involved more “caught” seabirds. Bait taking attempts and percentage outcome (e.g. successful, caught) varied between seabird species and was not always related to species abundance around fishing vessels. Using only haul data to calculate seabird bycatch grossly underestimates actual bycatch levels, with the level of seabird bycatch from pelagic longline fishing possibly double what was previously thought
