    Temperature or pressure controller

    Get PDF
Silicon chip thermal sensor coupled into a solid state power source controls temperature or pressure in combustion research. The silicon chip sensing element is embedded in a ceramic support for insulation, and connected to a high resistance bridge which operates the solid state power amplifiers

Variable-pulse switching circuit accurately controls solenoid-valve actuations

    IRAS observations of irregular galaxies

    Get PDF
Normal irregular galaxies seem to be unusual in having vigorous star formation yet lacking the many dark nebulae typical of spirals. The Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) observations of a large sample of irregulars are used to explore the dust contents of these galaxies. Compared to normal spirals, the irregulars generally have higher L sub IR/L sub B ratios, warmer f(100)/f(60) dust color temperatures, and lower globally-averaged dust/gas ratios. The relationship between the infrared data and various global optical properties of the galaxies is discussed

Solenoid operated valve in a control system powered by direct current issued to accurately measure the valve travel. This system is currently in operation with a 28-vdc power system used for control of fluids in liquid rocket motor test facilities

Lessons from Nutritional Labeling on the 20th Anniversary of the NLEA: Applying the History of Food Labeling to the Future of Household Chemical Labeling

    Get PDF
To remedy the defects of the current household chemical labeling system, Senator Al Franken of Minnesota and Representative Steve Israel of New York introduced legislation in the 111th Congress that would mandate labeling of “household cleaning products and similar products” with disclosure of all ingredients. This Note adopts that position as a starting point and proposes a new labeling scheme for all household chemicals modeled on the “Nutrition Facts” label mandated for food products. The Note reviews the history of food labeling regulation, examines present household chemical regulations, and proposes a new regulatory regime that learns from the successes and failures of food labeling past and present. Part II discusses the history of food and nutritional labeling since 1900. Part III features an overview of current household chemical labeling regulations. Part IV contains a brief introduction to some of the chemicals found in household products, including some of the known and suspected health and environmental concerns they may pose. Part V analyzes potential regulatory solutions to the problems presented by the current state of household chemical labeling and suggests some forms that a new labeling scheme should adopt

The 8-13 micron observations of Titan

    Get PDF
Narrow band observations of Titan at selected wavelengths in the 8-13 micron range show evidence for a strong temperature inversion and the existence of at least one more spectroscopically active component in the atmosphere in addition to H2 and CH4

The relationship between HIV seroconversion illness, HIV test interval and time to AIDS in a seroconverter cohort.

    Get PDF
Seroconversion illness is known to be associated with more rapid HIV disease progression. However, symptoms are often subjective and prone to recall bias. We describe symptoms reported as seroconversion illness and examine the relationship between illness, HIV test interval (time between antibody-negative and anibody-positive test dates) and the effect of both on time to AIDS from seroconversion. We used a Cox model, adjusting for age, sex, exposure group and year of estimated seroconversion. Of 1820 individuals, information on seroconversion illness was available for 1244 of whom 423 (34%) reported symptomatic seroconversion. Persons with a short test interval (< or = 2 months) were significantly more likely to report an illness than people with a longer interval (OR 6.76, 95% CI 4.75-9.62). Time to AIDS was significantly faster (P = 0.01) in those with a short test interval. The HIV test interval is a useful replacement for information on seroconversion illness in studies of HIV disease progression
