Anomalous growth of single ice crystals in solution
It is shown that major discrepancies exist between experiments and theory for ice crystal growth from solution. Accurate data, taken in a microgravity environment, approximate analytical models, and exact (probably numerical) models all are needed to advance our understanding of ice crystal growth phenomena. A new approximate semi-empirical theory is presented which predicts that a relatively sharp transition from natural convection control to diffusion control for ice growth in pure water occurs at a subcooling of about 10 C (a reduced temperature difference of about 0.125). No reliable data exist to test this prediction. The theory also predicts qualitatively the growth of ice in NaCl solution in which maxima in the growth rates are observed at various levels of subcooling
Modelling alternative strategies for delivering hepatitis B vaccine in prisons : the impact on the vaccination coverage of the injecting drug user population
Since 2001 hepatitis B vaccination has been offered to prisoners on reception into prisons in
England and Wales. However, short campaigns of vaccinating the entire population of individual
prisons have achieved high vaccination coverage for limited periods, suggesting that short
campaigns may be a preferable way of vaccinating prisoners. A model is used that describes the
flow of prisoners through prisons stratified by injecting status to compare a range of vaccination
scenarios that describe vaccination on prison reception or via regular short campaigns. Model
results suggest that vaccinating on prison reception can capture a greater proportion of the
injecting drug user (IDU) population than the comparable campaign scenarios (63% vs. 55 . 6%
respectively). Vaccination on prison reception is also more efficient at capturing IDUs for
vaccination than vaccination via a campaign, although vaccination via campaigns may have a
role with some infections for overall control
Float zone experiments in space
The molten zone/freezing crystal interface system and all the mechanisms were examined. If Marangoni convection produces oscillatory flows in the float zone of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, then it is unlikely that superior quality crystals can be grown in space using this process. The major goals were: (1) to determine the conditions for the onset of Marangoni flows in molten tin, a model system for low Prandtl number molten semiconductor materials; (2) to determine whether the flows can be suppressed by a thin oxide layer; and (3) based on experimental and mathematical analysis, to predict whether oscillatory flows will occur in the float zone silicon geometry in space, and if so, could it be suppressed by thin oxide or nitride films. Techniques were developed to analyze molten tin surfaces in a UHV system in a disk float zone geometry to minimize buoyancy flows. The critical Marangoni number for onset of oscillatory flows was determined to be greater than 4300 on atomically clean molten tin surfaces
ACUTE EFFECTS OF VERBAL FEEDBACK ON EXPLOSIVE UPPER-BODY PERFORMANCE IN ELITE ATHLETES
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of verbal feedback on the explosive upper-body performance of well-trained rugby union athletes in a resistance training session. Athletes (n = 9) completed two sessions of bench-throws with peak velocity feedback after each repetition, and two identical sessions without feedback. Within each session, three sets of four repetitions of bench-throw were completed. When feedback was received there was a small increase of 1.8% (90% confidence limits, ±2.7%) and 1.3% (±0.7%) in average peak power and velocity when averaged over the three sets. When individual sets were compared, there was a tendency towards greater increases in average peak power in the second and third sets. Benefits of feedback may be greatest in the latter sets of training and could improve training quality and adaptation
Modelling the hepatitis B vaccination programme in prisons
A vaccination programme offering hepatitis B (HBV) vaccine at reception into prison has been introduced into selected prisons in England and Wales. Over the coming years it is anticipated this vaccination programme will be extended. A model has been developed to assess the potential impact of the programme on the vaccination coverage of prisoners, ex-prisoners, and injecting drug users (IDUs). Under a range of coverage scenarios, the model predicts the change over time in the vaccination status of new entrants to prison, current prisoners and IDUs in the community. The model predicts that at baseline in 2012 57% of the IDU population will be vaccinated with up to 72% being vaccinated depending on the vaccination scenario implemented. These results are sensitive to the size of the IDU population in England and Wales and the average time served by an IDU during each prison visit. IDUs that do not receive HBV vaccine in the community are at increased risk from HBV infection. The HBV vaccination programme in prisons is an effective way of vaccinating this hard-to-reach population although vaccination coverage on prison reception must be increased to achieve this
Bose-Fermi mixtures in 1D optical superlattices
The zero temperature phase diagram of binary boson-fermion mixtures in
two-colour superlattices is investigated. The eigenvalue problem associated
with the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved using an exact numerical
diagonalization technique, supplemented by an adaptive basis truncation scheme.
The physically motivated basis truncation allows to access larger systems in a
fully controlled and very flexible framework. Several experimentally relevant
observables, such as the matter-wave interference pattern and the
condensatefraction, are investigated in order to explore the rich phase
diagram. At symmetric half filling a phase similar to the Mott-insulating phase
in a commensurate purely bosonic system is identified and an analogy to recent
experiments is pointed out. Furthermore a phase of complete localization of the
bosonic species generated by the repulsive boson-fermion interaction is
identified. These localized condensates are of a different nature than the
genuine Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Dispersion Relations for Bernstein Waves in a Relativistic Pair Plasma
A fully relativistic treatment of Bernstein waves in an electron-positron
pair plasma has remained too formidable a task owing to the very complex nature
of the problem. In this article, we perform contour integration of the
dielectric response function and numerically compute the dispersion curves for
a uniform, magnetized, relativistic electron-positron pair plasma. The behavior
of the dispersion solution for several cases with different plasma temperatures
is highlighted. In particular, we find two wave modes that exist only for large
wavelengths and frequencies similar to the cyclotron frequency in a moderately
relativistic pair plasma. The results presented here have important
implications for the study of those objects where a hot magnetized
electron-positron plasma plays a fundamental role in generating the observed

Analysis of human vergence dynamics
Disparity vergence is commonly viewed as being controlled by at least two mechanisms, an open-loop vergence-specific burst mechanism analogous to the ballistic drive of saccades, and a closed-loop feedback mechanism controlled by the disparity error. We show that human vergence dynamics for disparity jumps of a large textured field have a typical time course consistent with predominant control by the open-loop vergence-specific burst mechanism, although various subgroups of the population show radically different vergence behaviors. Some individuals show markedly slow divergence responses, others slow convergence responses, others slow responses in both vergence directions, implying that the two vergence directions have separate control mechanisms. The faster time courses usually had time-symmetric velocity waveforms implying open-loop burst control, while the slow response usually had time-asymmetric velocity waveforms implying closed-loop feedback control. A further type of behavior in a distinct subpopulation is a compound anomalous divergence response consisting of an initial convergence movement followed by a large corrective divergence movement with time courses implying closed-loop feedback control. The closed-loop response for slow responses to disparity steps exhibited pronounced oscillations in the velocity trace, implying the involvement of a sampled-data system with a rate of about 3 samples/s. This analysis of the variety of human vergence responses thus contributes substantially to the understanding of the oculomotor control mechanisms underlying the generation of vergence movements
Evaluating the success of a marine protected area: A systematic review approach.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), marine areas in which human activities are restricted, are implemented worldwide to protect the marine environment. However, with a large proportion of these MPAs being no more than paper parks, it is important to be able to evaluate MPA success, determined by improvements to biophysical, socio-economic and governance conditions. In this study a systematic literature review was conducted to determine the most frequently used indicators of MPA success. These were then applied to a case study to demonstrate how success can be evaluated. The fifteen most frequently used indicators included species abundance, level of stakeholder participation and the existence of a decision-making and management body. Using the indicator framework with a traffic light system, we demonstrate how an MPA can be evaluated in terms of how well it performs against the indicators using secondary data from the literature. The framework can be used flexibly. For example, where no MPA data currently exist, the framework can be populated by qualitative data provided by local stakeholder knowledge. This system provides a cost-effective and straightforward method for managers and decision-makers to determine the level of success of any MPA and identify areas of weakness. However, given the variety of motivations for MPA establishment, this success needs to be determined in the context of the original management objectives of the MPA with greater weighting being placed on those objectives where appropriate
