Mechanism of Reconnection on Kinetic Scales Based on Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission Observations
We examine the role that ions and electrons play in reconnection using observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission on kinetic ion and electron scales, which are much shorter than magnetohydrodynamic scales. This study reports observations with unprecedented high resolution that MMS provides for magnetic eld (7.8 ms) and plasma (30 ms for electrons and 150 ms for ions). We analyze and compare approaches to the magnetopause in 2016 November, to the electron diffusion region in the magnetotail in 2017 July followed by a current sheet crossing in 2018 July. Besides magnetic eld reversals, changes in the direction of the ow velocity, and ion and electron heating, MMS observed large uctuations in the electron ow speeds in the magnetotail. As expected from numerical simulations, we have veried that when the eld lines and plasma become decoupled a large reconnecting electric eld related to the Hall current (110 mV/m) is responsible for fast reconnection in the ion diffusion region. Although inertial accelerating forces remain moderate (12 mV/m), the electric elds resulting from the divergence of the full electron pressure tensor provide the main contribution to the generalized Ohms law at the neutral sheet (as large as 200 mV/m). In our view, this illustrates that when ions decouple electron physics dominates. The results obtained on kinetic scales may be useful for better understanding the physical mechanisms governing reconnection processes in various magnetized laboratory and space plasmas
Radiation reaction on charged particles in three-dimensional motion in classical and quantum electrodynamics
We extend our previous work (see arXiv:quant-ph/0501026), which compared the
predictions of quantum electrodynamics concerning radiation reaction with those
of the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac theory for a charged particle in linear motion.
Specifically, we calculate the predictions for the change in position of a
charged scalar particle, moving in three-dimensional space, due to the effect
of radiation reaction in the one-photon-emission process in quantum
electrodynamics. The scalar particle is assumed to be accelerated for a finite
period of time by a three-dimensional electromagnetic potential dependent only
on one of the spacetime coordinates. We perform this calculation in the
limit and show that the change in position agrees with that
obtained in classical electrodynamics with the Lorentz-Dirac force treated as a
perturbation. We also show for a time-dependent but space-independent
electromagnetic potential that the forward-scattering amplitude at order
does not contribute to the position change in the limit after the
mass renormalization is taken into account.Comment: Latex, 20page
Evolution of the Australian lithosphere
The evolution of the Australian plate can be interpreted in a plate-tectonic paradigm in which lithospheric growth occurred via vertical and horizontal accretion. The lithospheric roots of Archaean lithosphere developed contemporaneously with the overlying crust. Vertical accretion of the Archaean lithosphere is probably related to the arrival of large plumes, although horizontal lithospheric accretion was also important to crustal growth. The Proterozoic was an era of major crustal growth in which the components of the North Australian, West Australian and South Australian cratons were formed and amalgamated during a series of accretionary events and continent-continent collisions, interspersed with periods of lithospheric extension. During Phanerozoic accretionary tectonism, approximately 30% of the Australian crust was added to the eastern margin of the continent in a predominantly suprasubduction environment. Widespread plume-driven rifting during the breakup of Gondwana may have contributed to the destruction of Archaean lithospheric roots (as a result of lithospheric stretching). However, lithospheric growth occurred at the same time due to mafic underplating along the eastern margin of the plate. Northward drift of Australia during the Tertiary led to the development of a complex accretionary margin at the leading edge of the plate (Papua New Guinea)
Magnetic properties of GdZn (T = Fe, Co) investigated by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy
We investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the GdZn
( = Fe and Co) compounds using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS),
X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular
dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRMS measurements reveal that the
GdCoZn compound has a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin structure
with a magnetic propagation vector =
below the N\'eel temperature ( 5.7 K). Only the Gd ions carry a magnetic moment forming an
antiferromagnetic structure with magnetic representation . For the
ferromagnetic GdFeZn compound, an extensive investigation was
performed at low temperature and under magnetic field using XANES and XMCD
techniques. A strong XMCD signal of about 12.5 and 9.7 is observed
below the Curie temperature ( 85 K) at the Gd- and edges,
respectively. In addition, a small magnetic signal of about 0.06 of the
jump is recorded at the Zn -edge suggesting that the Zn 4 states are spin
polarized by the Gd 5 extended orbitals
Two-dimensional ranking of Wikipedia articles
The Library of Babel, described by Jorge Luis Borges, stores an enormous
amount of information. The Library exists {\it ab aeterno}. Wikipedia, a free
online encyclopaedia, becomes a modern analogue of such a Library. Information
retrieval and ranking of Wikipedia articles become the challenge of modern
society. While PageRank highlights very well known nodes with many ingoing
links, CheiRank highlights very communicative nodes with many outgoing links.
In this way the ranking becomes two-dimensional. Using CheiRank and PageRank we
analyze the properties of two-dimensional ranking of all Wikipedia English
articles and show that it gives their reliable classification with rich and
nontrivial features. Detailed studies are done for countries, universities,
personalities, physicists, chess players, Dow-Jones companies and other
categories.Comment: RevTex 9 pages, data, discussion added, more data at

The effect of active immunization against adrenocorticotropic hormone on cortisol, beta-endorphin, vocalization, and growth in pigs
Because the poor growth performance of intensively housed pigs is associated with increased circulating glucocorticoid concentrations, we investigated the effects of glucocorticoid suppression by inducing a humoral immune response to ACTH on physiological and production variables in growing pigs. Grower pigs (28.6 0.9 kg) were immunized with amino acids 1 through 24 of ACTH conjugated to ovalbumin and suspended in diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) dextran-adjuvant or adjuvant alone (control) on d 1, 28, and 56. The ACTH-specific antibody titers generated suppressed increases in cortisol concentrations on d 63 in response to an acute stressor (P = 0.002; control = 71 +/- 8.2 ng/ mL; ACTH-immune = 43 +/- 4.9 ng/mL) without altering basal concentrations. Plasma beta-endorphin concentrations were also increased (P < 0.001) on d 63 (control = 18 +/- 2.1 ng/mL; ACTH-immune = 63 +/- 7.3 ng/mL), presumably because of a release from negative feedback on the expression of proopiomelanocortin in pituitary corticotropes. Immunization against ACTH did not alter ADG (P = 0.120; control = 1,077 25; ACTH-immune = 1,143 25 g) or ADFI (P = 0.64; control = 2,719 42; ACTH-immune = 2,749 42 g) and did not modify behavior (P = 0.681) assessed by measuring vocalization in response to acute restraint. In summary, suppression of stress-induced cortisol responses through ACTH immunization increased beta-endorphin concentrations, but it did not modify ADG, ADFI, or restraint vocalization score in growing pigs
Calculating the Rest Tension for a Polymer of String Bits
We explore the application of approximation schemes from many body physics,
including the Hartree-Fock method and random phase approximation (RPA), to the
problem of analyzing the low energy excitations of a polymer chain made up of
bosonic string bits. We accordingly obtain an expression for the rest tension
of the bosonic relativistic string in terms of the parameters
characterizing the microscopic string bit dynamics. We first derive an exact
connection between the string tension and a certain correlation function of the
many-body string bit system. This connection is made for an arbitrary
interaction potential between string bits and relies on an exact dipole sum
rule. We then review an earlier calculation by Goldstone of the low energy
excitations of a polymer chain using RPA. We assess the accuracy of the RPA by
calculating the first order corrections. For this purpose we specialize to the
unique scale invariant potential, namely an attractive delta function potential
in two (transverse) dimensions. We find that the corrections are large, and
discuss a method for summing the large terms. The corrections to this improved
RPA are roughly 15\%.Comment: 44 pages, phyzzx, psfig required, Univ. of Florida preprint,
