Synthesis of the first thieno-δ-carboline. Fluorescence studies in solution and in lipid vesicles

The first thieno-δ-carboline (6,8,9-trimethyl-5H-pyrido[3,2-b]thieno[3,2-f]indole) was prepared in good yield (70%) by intramolecular palladium-assisted cyclization of an ortho-chlorodiarylamine. The latter was in turn selectively synthesized in high yield (90%) by C–N palladiumcatalyzed cross-coupling of 3-bromo-2-chloropyridine with, the also prepared, 6-amino-2,3,7-trimethylbenzo[b]thiophene. Fluorescence studies in solution show that thieno-δ-carboline has a solvatochromic behaviour. Despite the low fluorescence quantum yields in solution, studies of its incorporation in lipid vesicles of DPPC, DOPE and DODAB indicate that thienocarboline is located mainly inside the lipid bilayer, exhibiting different behaviours in gel or liquid-crystalline phases. Our studies are useful for the incorporation of thienocarboline in liposomes and for controlled drug release assays, due to its biological activity

Off-Diagonal Hyperfine Interaction and Parity Non-conservation in Cesium

We have performed relativistic many-body calculations of the hyperfine interaction in the 6s6s and 7s7s states of Cs, including the off-diagonal matrix element. The calculations were used to determine the accuracy of the semi-empirical formula for the electromagnetic transition amplitude induced by the hyperfine interaction. We have found that even though the contribution of the many-body effects into the matrix elements is very large, the square root formula = = \sqrt{ } remains valid to the accuracy of a fraction of 10310^{-3}. The result for the M1-amplitude is used in the interpretation of the parity-violation measurement in the 6s7s6s-7s transition in Cs which claims a possible deviation from the Standard model.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX, Submitted to Phys. Introduction to Magnetic Monopoles

One of the most basic properties of magnetism is that a magnet always has two poles, north and south, which cannot be separated into isolated poles, i.e., magnetic monopoles. However, there are strong theoretical arguments why magnetic monopoles should exist. In spite of extensive searches they have not been found, but they have nevertheless played a central role in our understanding of physics at the most fundamental level.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. “I'm Still Fighting for the Two of Us”: How Partners of UK Veterans Construct Their Experience of Living with Combat‐Related Trauma

There has been little qualitative research into the experiences of UK partners of veterans with PTSD. This study therefore aimed to explore how partners constructed their experiences of living with the condition. Fifteen female partners of male UK veterans were recruited and interviewed. Using a social constructionist thematic analysis, five themes were constructed: the women's need to subdue own emotional and behavioral responses; dilemmas about whether the veteran was unwell or ‘bad’; attempts at negotiating multiple roles; challenging the narrative of veterans as heroes; and the relational struggle with the transition to nonmilitary life. This study highlighted the importance of considering the veteran as existing within a relational and cultural context, and the need to include partners in therapeutic interventions
