    Habitual prospective memory in schizophrenia

    Background Prospective memory (PM), the act of remembering that something has to be done in the future without any explicit prompting to recall, provides a useful framework with which to examine problems in internal-source monitoring. This is because it requires distinguishing between two internally-generated processes, namely the intention to perform an action versus actual performance of the action. In habitual tasks, such as taking medicine every few hours, the same PM task is performed regularly and thus it is essential that the individual is able to distinguish thoughts (i.e., thinking about taking the medicine) from actions (i.e., actually taking the medicine). Methods We assessed habitual PM in patients with schizophrenia by employing a laboratory analogue of a habitual PM task in which, concurrently with maneuvering a ball around an obstacle course (ongoing activity), participants were to turn over a counter once during each trial (PM task). After each trial, participants were asked whether they had remembered to turn the counter over. Results Patients with schizophrenia made a disproportionate number of errors compared to controls of reporting that a PM response had been made (i.e., the counter turned over) after an omission error (i.e., the counter was not turned over). There was no group difference in terms of reporting that an omission error occurred (i.e., forgetting to turn over the counter) when in fact a PM response had been made. Conclusion Patients with schizophrenia displayed a specific deficit distinguishing between two internally-generated sources, attributable to either poor source monitoring or temporal discrimination

    Development of the preterm infant gut microbiome: a research priority.

    The very low birth weight (VLBW) infant is at great risk for marked dysbiosis of the gut microbiome due to multiple factors, including physiological immaturity and prenatal/postnatal influences that disrupt the development of a normal gut flora. However, little is known about the developmental succession of the microbiota in preterm infants as they grow and mature. This review provides a synthesis of our understanding of the normal development of the infant gut microbiome and contrasts this with dysbiotic development in the VLBW infant. The role of human milk in normal gut microbial development is emphasized, along with the role of the gut microbiome in immune development and gastroenteric health. Current research provides evidence that the gut microbiome interacts extensively with many physiological systems and metabolic processes in the developing infant. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are currently no studies prospectively mapping the gut microbiome of VLBW infants through early childhood. This knowledge gap must be filled to inform a healthcare system that can provide for the growth, health, and development of VLBW infants. The paper concludes with speculation about how the VLBW infants' gut microbiome might function through host-microbe interactions to contribute to the sequelae of preterm birth, including its influence on growth, development, and general health of the infant host

    SURVEY OF UPPER RATTLESNAKE CREEK, A TROUT-SPAWNING TRIBUTARY OF THE CLARK FORK RIVER (MT), FOR TUBIFEX TUBIFEX

    Rattlesnake Creek is a tributary of the Clark Fork River that flows through parts of western Montana and through Missoula. Currently, an effort is underway to increase spawning habitat for bull and westslope cutthroat trout in the Clark Fork drainage. One proposal in this effort includes the modification or removal of the Mountain Water Company dam on lower Rattlesnake Creek that currently blocks fish passage. The removal or modification of this dam would open miles of prime spawning habitat. However, the Clark Fork River is known to be contaminated with Myxobolus cerebralis, the causative agent of salmonid whirling disease. The presence of this parasite in the Clark Fork River has lead to concerns that removal/modification of the dam would allow the parasite to spread into the upper reaches of Rattlesnake Creek, endangering the wild trout populations already established there. Therefore, the objective of this study was to survey the upper portions of Rattlesnake Creek for the presence of the aquatic oligochaete, Tubifex tubifex. T. tubifex is an obligatory host for M. cerebralis and the parasite cannot be transmitted to trout in its absence. An earlier, cursory study by another investigator did not detect T. tubifex in the Rattlesnake, so we conducted a more comprehensive survey of the creek for this oligochaete. Further, these worms were screened for the presence of M. cerebralis triactinomyxons (TAMs; stage of parasite that infects trout)

    An analysis of automatic teller machine usage by older adults : a structured interview approach.

    It is often assumed that automatic teller machines (ATMs) are inherently easy to use and require no training. However, there is evidence to suggest that ATM users do experience difficulty when learning to use the system. The purpose of the present study was to conduct an in-depth analysis of ATM usage by older adults. Our approach consisted of telephone interviews followed by structured individual interviews. The goals were to understand the problems encountered by ATM users, to determine how ATMs might be better designed and to assess the training needs of older individuals. The phone interview data provide information about the relationships between age, sex and ATM usage within the adult sample, as well as information about why some people choose not to use ATMs. The structured interview data provide a more in-depth view of the concerns of both users and non-users, and information about training needs. The training and design implications of the results are discussed

    Central Administration of Agouti-Related Peptide Increases Food Intake in Japanese Quail

    Agouti-related peptide is a 132-amino acid peptide associated with stimulating food intake in birds and mammals. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of AgRP in 7-day old Japanese quail. In Experiment 1, we tested 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 nmol AgRP and found no effect on food intake or water intake over a 3 hour duration. In Experiment 2, we tested we tested 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 nmol AgRP and found no effect on food or water intake over a 24 hour duration. In Experiment 3, we tested 0.0625 and 0.125 nmol AgRP and found no effect on food intake over a 24 hour duration, but found an increase in water intake 900 minutes following injection. In Experiment 4, we tested 1.5 and 3.0 nmol AgRP and found an increase in food and water intake 900 minutes following injection in quail which received 1.5, but not 3.0, nmol AgRP. In Experiment 5, we found that AgRP had no effect on behaviors other than food intake. These results suggest that AgRP has a stimulatory effect on food intake in Japanese quail

    Effective Community Engagement Strategies: The Voices of Injection Drug Users

    Academic and community interactions are often conducted with good intentions. However, there is exploitation risk for populations engaging in illegal activities. Collaborations with injection drug users (IDUs) can highlight their expertise and support progressive research. The objective of our research was to use community-based participatory research principles to give voice to IDUs, define community, and recommend authentic engagement strategies. In Phase 1, 10 focus groups (n=33, ages 25–64) helped define community and collaborative partnerships. In Phase 2, community forums with 13 additional IDUs provided feedback on focus group themes. Results: (1) primary themes defining community— geography and social networks; (2) community qualities—respectful, accepting, outcasts, and welcoming; (3) engagement recommendations—incentives, recognizing potential for contributions, treating IDUs respectfully, using research results for positive benefit. Conclusions: Providing voice to marginalized communities allows for self-definition, description of needs, and authentic engagement recommendations. This information is crucial for developing effective programs and creating sustainable collaborations between IDUs and academics

    Meeting Report: The 2nd Annual Argonne Soils Workshop, Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago Illinois, USA, October 6-8, 2010

    This report summarizes the proceedings of the 2nd Annual Argonne Soils Workshop held at Argonne National Laboratory October 6–8, 2010. The workshop assembled a diverse group of soil ecologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, and computational scientists to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to implementation of metagenomics approaches in soil microbial ecology. The overarching theme of the workshop was “designing ecologically meaningful soil metagenomics research”, which encouraged presentations on both ecological and computational topics. The workshop fostered valuable cross-discipline communication and delivered the message that soil metagenomics research must be based on an iterative process between biological inquiry and bioinformatics tools
