Co-digestion of macroalgae for biogas production: an LCA-based environmental evaluation
Algae represent a favourable and potentially sustainable source of biomass for bioenergy-based industrial pathways in the future.
The study, performed on a real pilot plant implemented in Augusta (Italy) within the frame of the BioWALK4Biofuels project,
aims to figure out whether seaweed (macroalgae) cultivated in near-shore open ponds could be considered a beneficial aspect as a
source of biomass for biogas production within the co-digestion with local agricultural biological waste. The LCA results
confirm that the analysed A and B scenarios (namely the algae-based co-digestion scenario and agricultural mix feedstock
scenario) present an environmental performance more favourable than that achieved with conventional non-renewable-based
technologies (specifically natural gas - Scenario C). Results show that the use of seaweed (Scenario A) represent a feasible
solution in order to replace classical biomass used for biofuel production from a land-based feedstock. The improvement of the
environmental performances is quantifiable on 10% respect to Scenario B, and 38 times higher than Scenario
An attributional Life Cycle Assessment application experience to highlight environmental hotspots in the production of foamy polylactic acid trays for fresh-food packaging usage
Food packaging systems mainly serve to contain and protect foods during their shelf-lives. However, it is well known that a package is responsible for several environmental impacts associated with its entire life-cycle. Therefore, package design should be developed taking into account not only cost, food shelf life and safety, as well as user-friendliness, but also environmental sustainability. To address and improve this latter issue, environmental evaluation methodologies need to be applied: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is one amongst them, and can be considered a valid tool for this purpose. Indeed, it has been long applied in the food packaging field to highlight both environmental hotspots and improvement potentials for more eco-friendly products. In this context, this paper reports upon an LCA application experience in the production of foamy Polylactic Acid (PLA) trays for fresh-food packaging applications. The study highlighted that the highest environmental impacts come from the production and transport of the granules, so remarking the need to search for alternative biopolymers. In this regard, the results of this study will form the base for another one regarding the assessment of second-generation PIA granules, namely those produced by processing both wastes and wastewaters from starchy crop cultivation systems and processing plants. Mass Spectrometric and Computational Study of SnPb in the Gas Phase
The SnPb molecule has been identified in a Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry experiment. The direct dissociation reaction and two isomolecular exchange reactions involving the Sn(2) and Pb(2) molecules have been studied, in the 1426-1705 K range of temperatures, using both second and third law procedures. The D(degree)0(SnPb,g) has been derived, for the first time, as (122.6+/-4.0) kJ mol(-1). Density functional and ab initio calculations up to the coupled clusters level of theory were also performed. In addition, the anion dissociation energy D(degree)0(SnPb(-),g) of (179.2+/-4.2) kJ mol(-1) was determined using the D(degree)0(SnPb,g) mass spectrometric value derived in this investigation and literature data
Effect of the (Nd,Dy)-double doping on the structural properties of ceria
The crystallographic properties of the Ce1-x(Nd0.63Dy0.37)xO2-x/2 system (0 64 x 64 0.6) were studied by means of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and compared to the ones of Sm-doped ceria. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of substituting Sm3+ by a mixture of a smaller and a larger ion that ensures a more pronounced Ce4+/dopant size mismatch while having the same average ionic size as Sm3+. Two main findings came to light: (a) the compositional region of the CeO2-based solid solution widens up to x ranging between 0.4 and 0.5, and (b) the cell parameter is larger than the one of Sm-doped ceria at each composition. Both effects are expected to play a significant role on the ionic conductivity of the material. The results are discussed in terms of disorder and cation-vacancy association
Vortex and half-vortex dynamics in a spinor quantum fluid of interacting polaritons
Spinorial or multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates may sustain fractional
quanta of circulation, vorticant topological excitations with half integer
windings of phase and polarization. Matter-light quantum fluids, such as
microcavity polaritons, represent a unique test bed for realising strongly
interacting and out-of-equilibrium condensates. The direct access to the phase
of their wavefunction enables us to pursue the quest of whether half vortices
---rather than full integer vortices--- are the fundamental topological
excitations of a spinor polariton fluid. Here, we are able to directly generate
by resonant pulsed excitations, a polariton fluid carrying either the half or
full vortex states as initial condition, and to follow their coherent evolution
using ultrafast holography. Surprisingly we observe a rich phenomenology that
shows a stable evolution of a phase singularity in a single component as well
as in the full vortex state, spiraling, splitting and branching of the initial
cores under different regimes and the proliferation of many vortex anti-vortex
pairs in self generated circular ripples. This allows us to devise the
interplay of nonlinearity and sample disorder in shaping the fluid and driving
the phase singularities dynamicsComment: New version complete with revised modelization, discussion and added

Casein haplotype variability in Sicilian dairy goat breeds
In the Mediterranean region, goat milk production is an important economic activity. In the present study, 4 casein genes were genotyped in 5 Sicilian goat breeds to 1) identify casein haplotypes present in the Argentata dell'Etna, Girgentana, Messinese, Derivata di Siria, and Maltese goat breeds; and 2) describe the structure of the Sicilian goat breeds based on casein haplotypes and allele frequencies. In a sample of 540 dairy goats, 67 different haplotypes with frequency >or=0.01 and 27 with frequency >or=0.03 were observed. The most common CSN1S1-CSN2-CSN1S2-CSN3 haplotype for Derivata di Siria and Maltese was FCFB (0.17 and 0.22, respectively), whereas for Argentata dell'Etna, Girgentana and Messinese was ACAB (0.06, 0.23, and 0.10, respectively). According to the haplotype reconstruction, Argentata dell'Etna, Girgentana, and Messinese breeds presented the most favorable haplotype for cheese production, because the casein concentration in milk of these breeds might be greater than that in Derivata di Siria and Maltese breeds. Based on a cluster analysis, the breeds formed 2 main groups: Derivata di Siria, and Maltese in one group, and Argentata dell'Etna and Messinese in the other; the Girgentana breed was between these groups but closer to the latter
