A study of liquid propellant autoignition
Data and theory pertinent to the autoignition of liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants were reviewed. Physical models of the processes supporting or contributing to autoignition were developed. Emphasis was placed on the description of the physical environment and its relationship to the autoignition phenomenon
The photon blockade effect in optomechanical systems
We analyze the photon statistics of a weakly driven optomechanical system and
discuss the effect of photon blockade under single photon strong coupling
conditions. We present an intuitive interpretation of this effect in terms of
displaced oscillator states and derive analytic expressions for the cavity
excitation spectrum and the two photon correlation function . Our
results predict the appearance of non-classical photon correlations in the
combined strong coupling and sideband resolved regime, and provide a first
detailed understanding of photon-photon interactions in strong coupling
optomechanics

Optical bistability involving planar metamaterial with broken structural symmetry
We report on a bistable light transmission through a planar metamaterial
composed of a metal pattern of weakly asymmetric elements placed on a nonlinear
substrate. Such structure bears the Fano-like sharp resonance response of a
trapped-mode excitation. The feedback required for bistability is provided by
the coupling between the strong antiphased trapped-mode-resonance currents
excited on the metal elements and the intensity of inner field in the nonlinear

Workplace Dispute Resolution and Gender Inequality
Despite substantial bodies of research on employment differentials between women and men and on conflict in the workplace, little prior research links the two. This article summarizes preliminary results of a study which attempts to fill this knowledge gap. We conceive of workplace disputes as having origins, processes, and outcomes. We theorize that these three components are patterned by sex roles, sex segregation of jobs, and work structures (unions, firms, industries). Our findings indicate that workplace jurisprudence operates differentially for women and men employees, as hypothesized. The results suggest linkages to other aspects of employment inequality and provide a theoretical framework for further research and policy making
Exact Solution of the Infinite-Range Quantum Mattis Model
We have solved the quantum version of the Mattis model with infinite-range
interactions. A variational approach gives the exact solution for the
infinite-range system, in spite of the non-commutative nature of the quantum
spin components; this implies that quantum effects are not predominant in
determining the macroscopic properties of the system. Nevertheless, the model
has a surprisingly rich phase behaviour, exhibiting phase diagrams with

To initiate a study of the possible uses of convex functions in General
Relativity, we discuss the consequences of a spacetime or an
initial data set admitting a suitably defined convex

Governors tend to appoint Senators who most resemble voters in the state, rather than ideologues.
For over a century, state governors have had the power to appoint US Senators to vacant seats, a power which runs against the idea of Senators as being democratic representatives. But do governors appoint those with similar ideologies to themselves? In new research which reviewed senate candidates considered by governors to fill vacancies, Christopher Cooper, H. Gibbs Knotts, and Jordan Ragusa find that while they rarely appoint senators from a different party, they tend to skew towards the middle – appointing those who are closest to the ideology of the state’s median voter
Small Orbits
We study both the "large" and "small" U-duality charge orbits of extremal
black holes appearing in D = 5 and D = 4 Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theories
with symmetric scalar manifolds. We exploit a formalism based on cubic Jordan
algebras and their associated Freudenthal triple systems, in order to derive
the minimal charge representatives, their stabilizers and the associated
"moduli spaces". After recalling N = 8 maximal supergravity, we consider N = 2
and N = 4 theories coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets, as well
as N = 2 magic, STU, ST^2 and T^3 models. While the STU model may be considered
as part of the general N = 2 sequence, albeit with an additional triality
symmetry, the ST^2 and T^3 models demand a separate treatment, since their
representative Jordan algebras are Euclidean or only admit non-zero elements of
rank 3, respectively. Finally, we also consider minimally coupled N = 2, matter

Development of the Controlled Atmosphere Cone Calorimeter to Simulate Compartment Fires
The cone calorimeter with the controlled atmosphere compartment was used to control the fire air ventilation and to simulate the behaviour of materials in compartment fires, with rich burning under post flashover conditions. The standard cone calorimeter with controlled atmosphere design has to be improved, by compartment wall insulation, to reduce heat losses which reduced the fire temperature. Heat losses from the test section to the water cooled load cell were shown to be significant and the test specimen was insultated from the support. A chimney was added to the cone outlet to enable the measurement of the mean composition of the raw discharge gases. A method was developed for determining the mean gas sample and to prevent back flow of external air. This improved design was used to create under ventilated fires with pine wood where the equivalence ratio was controlled by the air flow into the compartment. These modified procedures for the cone calorimeter greatly extend its usefulness in material testing to conditions close to those encountered in post flashover compartment fires
