    Sampling rare fluctuations of height in the Oslo ricepile model

    We have studied large deviations of the height of the pile from its mean value in the Oslo ricepile model. We sampled these very rare events with probabilities of order 10−10010^{-100} by Monte Carlo simulations using importance sampling. These simulations check our qualitative arguement [Phys. Rev. E, {\bf 73}, 021303, 2006] that in steady state of the Oslo ricepile model, the probability of large negative height fluctuations Δh=−αL\Delta h=-\alpha L about the mean varies as exp⁥(−Îșα4L3)\exp(-\kappa {\alpha}^4 L^3) as L→∞L \to \infty with α\alpha held fixed, and Îș>0\kappa > 0.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Role of the target orientation angle and orbital angular momentum in the evaporation residue production

    The influence of the orientation angles of the target nucleus symmetry axis relative to the beam direction on the production of the evaporation residues is investigated for the 48^{48}Ca+154^{154}Sm reaction as a function of the beam energy. At low energies (Ec.m.<E_{\rm c.m.}<137 MeV), the yield of evaporation residues is observed only for collisions with small orientation angles (αT<450\alpha_T<45^0). At large energies (about Ec.m.=E_{\rm c.m.}=140--180 MeV) all the orientation angles αT\alpha_T can contribute to the evaporation residue cross section σER\sigma_{ER} in the 10--100 mb range, and at Ec.m.>E_{c.m.}>180 MeV σER\sigma_{ER} ranges around 0.1--10 mb because the fission barrier for a compound nucleus decreases by increasing its excitation energy and angular momentum.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, submitted to JPS

    Intraoperative electrocochleographic characteristics of auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder in cochlear implant subjects

    Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is characterized by an apparent discrepancy between measures of cochlear and neural function based on auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing. Clinical indicators of ANSD are a present cochlear microphonic (CM) with small or absent wave V. Many identified ANSD patients have speech impairment severe enough that cochlear implantation (CI) is indicated. To better understand the cochleae identified with ANSD that lead to a CI, we performed intraoperative round window electrocochleography (ECochG) to tone bursts in children (n = 167) and adults (n = 163). Magnitudes of the responses to tones of different frequencies were summed to measure the “total response” (ECochG-TR), a metric often dominated by hair cell activity, and auditory nerve activity was estimated visually from the compound action potential (CAP) and auditory nerve neurophonic (ANN) as a ranked “Nerve Score”. Subjects identified as ANSD (45 ears in children, 3 in adults) had higher values of ECochG-TR than adult and pediatric subjects also receiving CIs not identified as ANSD. However, nerve scores of the ANSD group were similar to the other cohorts, although dominated by the ANN to low frequencies more than in the non-ANSD groups. To high frequencies, the common morphology of ANSD cases was a large CM and summating potential, and small or absent CAP. Common morphologies in other groups were either only a CM, or a combination of CM and CAP. These results indicate that responses to high frequencies, derived primarily from hair cells, are the main source of the CM used to evaluate ANSD in the clinical setting. However, the clinical tests do not capture the wide range of neural activity seen to low frequency sounds

    A Symmetry Property of Momentum Distribution Functions in the Nonequilibrium Steady State of Lattice Thermal Conduction

    We study a symmetry property of momentum distribution functions in the steady state of heat conduction. When the equation of motion is symmetric under change of signs for all dynamical variables, the distribution function is also symmetric. This symmetry can be broken by introduction of an asymmetric term in the interaction potential or the on-site potential, or employing the thermal walls as heat reservoirs. We numerically find differences of behavior of the models with and without the on-site potential.Comment: 13 pages. submitted to JPS

    On composite systems of dilute and dense couplings

    Composite systems, where couplings are of two types, a combination of strong dilute and weak dense couplings of Ising spins, are examined through the replica method. The dilute and dense parts are considered to have independent canonical disordered or uniform bond distributions; mixing the models by variation of a parameter Îł\gamma alongside inverse temperature ÎČ\beta we analyse the respective thermodynamic solutions. We describe the variation in high temperature transitions as mixing occurs; in the vicinity of these transitions we exactly analyse the competing effects of the dense and sparse models. By using the replica symmetric ansatz and population dynamics we described the low temperature behaviour of mixed systems.Comment: 35 pages, 9 figures, submitted to JPhys

    Energy landscape of a Lennard-Jones liquid: Statistics of stationary points

    Molecular dynamics simulations are used to generate an ensemble of saddles of the potential energy of a Lennard-Jones liquid. Classifying all extrema by their potential energy u and number of unstable directions k, a well defined relation k(u) is revealed. The degree of instability of typical stationary points vanishes at a threshold potential energy, which lies above the energy of the lowest glassy minima of the system. The energies of the inherent states, as obtained by the Stillinger-Weber method, approach the threshold energy at a temperature close to the mode-coupling transition temperature Tc.Comment: 4 RevTeX pages, 6 eps figures. We apply a functional technique to compute different types of multiple-time correlation functions of the renewal process, which have applications to bead-assay experiments performed both with processive molecular motors, such as myosin V and kinesin, and rotary motors, such as F1-ATPase

    Investigation of the quasifission process by theoretical analysis of experimental data of fissionlike reaction products

    The fusion excitation function is the important quantity in planning experiments for the synthesis of superheavy elements. Its values seem to be determined by the experimental study of the hindrance to complete fusion by the observation of mass, angular and energy distributions of the fissionlike fragments. There is ambiguity in establishment of the reaction mechanism leading to the observed binary fissionlike fragments. The fissionlike fragments can be produced in the quasifission, fast fission, and fusion-fission processes which have overlapping in the mass (angular, kinetic energy) distributions of fragments. The branching ratio between quasifission and complete fusion strongly depends on the characteristics of the entrance channel. In this paper we consider a wide set of reactions (with different mass asymmetry and mass symmetry parameters) with the aim to explain the role played by many quantities on the reaction mechanisms. We also present the results of study of the 48^{48}Ca+249^{249}Bk reaction used to synthesize superheavy nuclei with Z = 117 by the determination of the evaporation residue cross sections and the effective fission barriers of excited nuclei formed along the de-excitation cascade of the compound nucleus.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, 2 table

    Cross Section Limits for the 208^{208}Pb(86^{86}Kr,n)293^{293}118 Reaction

    In April-May, 2001, the previously reported experiment to synthesize element 118 using the 208^{208}Pb(86^{86}Kr,n)293^{293}118 reaction was repeated. No events corresponding to the synthesis of element 118 were observed with a total beam dose of 2.6 x 1018^{18} ions. The simple upper limit cross sections (1 event) were 0.9 and 0.6 pb for evaporation residue magnetic rigidities of 2.00 TmT m and 2.12 TmT m, respectively. A more detailed cross section calculation, accounting for an assumed narrow excitation function, the energy loss of the beam in traversing the target and the uncertainty in the magnetic rigidity of the Z=118 recoils is also presented. Re-analysis of the primary data files from the 1999 experiment showed the reported element 118 events are not in the original data. The current results put constraints on the production cross section for synthesis of very heavy nuclei in cold fusion reactions.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Submitted to EPJ
