    Infrared irradiation-assisted solvent-free Pd-catalyzed (hetero)aryl-aryl coupling via C-H bond activation

    Get PDF
The increasing attention towards environmentally friendly synthetic protocols has boosted studies directed to the development of green and sustainable methods for direct C−H bond arylation of (hetero)arenes. In this context, here the infrared (IR) irradiation-assisted solvent-free Pd-catalyzed direct C−H bond arylation of (hetero)arenes was achieved. Several heteroaryl-aryl coupling reactions were described, also involving heterocycles commonly used as building blocks for the synthesis of organic semiconductors. The reaction tolerated many functional groups on the aromatic nuclei. The IR-irradiation as the energy source compared favorably with thermal heating and, in combination with solvent-free conditions, provided an important contribution to the development of protocols fitting with the principles of green chemistry

Soft molding lithography of conjugated polymers

    Get PDF
We report on the nanopatterning of conjugated polymers by soft molding, and exploit the glass transition of the organic compound in conformal contact with an elastomeric element. We succeeded in printing different compounds with resolution down to 300 nm at temperatures up to 300 °C in vacuum. No significant variation of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra nor heavy degradation of the PL quantum yield was observed after the lithography process. Based on the high resolution achieved and on the well-retained luminescence properties of the patterned compounds, we conclude that high-temperature soft lithography is a valid, flexible and straightforward technique for one-step realization of organic-based devices

Bombyx mori Silk Fibroin Regeneration in Solution of Lanthanide Ions: A Systematic Investigation

    Get PDF
Silk Fibroin (SF) obtained from Bombyx mori is a very attractive biopolymer that can be useful for many technological applications, from optoelectronics and photonics to biomedicine. It can be processed from aqueous solutions to obtain many scaffolds. SF dissolution is possible only with the mediation of chaotropic salts that disrupt the secondary structure of the protein. As a consequence, recovered materials have disordered structures. In a previous paper, it was shown that, by modifying the standard Ajisawa’s method by using a lanthanide salt, CeCl3, as the chaotropic agent, it is possible to regenerate SF as a fibrous material with a very ordered structure, similar to that of the pristine fiber, and doped with Ce+3 ions. Since SF exhibits a moderate fluorescence which can be enhanced by the incorporation of organic molecules, ions and nanoparticles, the possibility of doping it with lanthanide ions could be an appealing approach for the development of new photonic systems. Here, a systematic investigation of the behavior of degummed SF in the presence of all lanthanide ions, Ln+3, is reported. It has been found that all lanthanide chlorides are chaotropic salts for solubilizing SF. Ln+3 ions at the beginning and the end of the series (La+3, Pr+3, Er+3, Tm+3, Yb+3, Lu+3) favor the reprecipitation of fibrous SF as already found for Ce+3. In most cases, the obtained fiber preserves the morphological and structural features of the pristine SF. With the exception of SF treated with La+3, Tm+3, and Lu+3, for all the fibers re-precipitated a concentration of Ln+3 between 0.2 and 0.4% at was measured, comparable to that measured for Ce+3-doped SF

Nanostructuring poly-[2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexiloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] thin films by high-temperature soft lithography

Abstract Sub micron patterning of the conjugated polymer, poly-[2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexiloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) has been achieved by high-temperature soft lithography. The process has been carried out by placing a spin-coated polymer film in conformal contact with elastomeric replicas of master structures fabricated by electron beam lithography. The system is then heated to decrease the polymer viscosity, allowing the pattern transfer with resolution down to 300 nm. The well-preserved photoluminescence spectrum and efficiency of the emissive polymer clearly indicate that high-temperature soft lithography can be successfully applied for the one-step realization of organic-based devices

Surface Immobilized His-tagged Azurin as a Model Interface for the Investigation of Vectorial Electron Transfer in Biological Systems

    Get PDF
A model system for the electrochemical investigation of vectorial electron transfer in biological systems was designed, assembled and characterized. Gold electrodes, functionalized with a -OCH3 terminated, aromatic self-assembled monolayer, were used as a substrate for the adsorption of variants of copper- containing, redox metalloprotein azurin. The engineered azurin bears a polyhistidine tag at its C-terminus. Thanks to the presence of the solvent exposed tag, which chelates Cu2+ ions in solution, we introduced an exogenous redox centre. The different reduction potentials of the two redox centres and their positioning with respect to the surface are such that electron transfer from the exogenous copper centre and the electrode is mediated by the native azurin active site, closely paralleling electron transfer processes in naturally occurring multicentre metalloprotein

Synthetic Aspects and Electro-Optical Properties of Fluorinated Arylenevinylenes for Luminescence and Photovoltaics

    No full text
In this review, the main synthetic aspects and properties of fluorinated arylenevinylene compounds, both oligomers and polymers, are summarized and analyzed. Starting from vinyl organotin derivatives and aryl halides, the Stille cross-coupling reaction has been successfully applied as a versatile synthetic protocol to prepare a wide series of π-conjugated compounds, selectively fluorinated on the aromatic and/or vinylene units. The impact of fluoro-functionalization on properties, the solid state organization and intermolecular interactions of the synthesized compounds are discussed, also in comparison with the non-fluorinated counterparts. Luminescent and photovoltaic applications are also discussed, highlighting the role of fluorine on the performance of devices
