    Same-sign Multilepton Signatures of an SU(2)RSU(2)_R Quintuplet at the LHC

    We study in detail the collider signatures of an SU(2)RSU(2)_R fermionic quintuplet in the framework of left-right symmetric model in the context of the 13 TeV LHC. Apart from giving a viable dark matter candidate (χ0\chi^0), this model provides unique collider imprints in the form of same-sign multileptons through the decays of multi-charged components of the quintuplet. In particular, we consider the scenario where the quintuplet carries (BL)=4(B - L) = 4 charge, allowing for the presence of high charge-multiplicity particles with relatively larger mass differences among them compared to (BL)(B - L) = 0 or 2. In this paper, we mainly focus on the same-sign n-lepton signatures (nSSL). We show that with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb1fb^{-1}, the mass of the neutral component, Mχ0480 (800)M_{\chi^0} \leq 480~(800) GeV can be excluded at 95\% CL in the 2SSL (3SSL) channel after imposing several selection criteria. We also show that a 5σ5\sigma discovery is also achievable if Mχ0390 (750)M_{\chi^0} \leq 390~(750) GeV in the 2SSL (3SSL) channel with 1000 fb1fb^{-1} integrated luminosity.Comment: 24 pages, 7 tables, 12 figures.     A hybrid setup for fundamental unknowns in neutrino oscillations using T2HK (ν\nu) and μ\mu-DAR (νˉ\bar{\nu})

    Neutrino mass hierarchy, CP-violation, and octant of θ23\theta_{23} are the fundamental unknowns in neutrino oscillations. In order to address all these three unknowns, we study the physics reach of a setup, where we replace the antineutrino run of T2HK with antineutrinos from muon decay at rest (μ\mu-DAR). This approach has the advantages of having higher statistics in both neutrino and antineutrino modes, and lower beam-on backgrounds for antineutrino run with reduced systematics. We find that a hybrid setup consisting of T2HK (ν\nu) and μ\mu-DAR (νˉ\bar\nu) in conjunction with full exposure from T2K and NOν\nuA can resolve the issue of mass hierarchy at greater than 3σ\sigma C.L. irrespective of the choices of hierarchy, δCP\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}, and θ23\theta_{23}. This hybrid setup can also establish the CP-violation at 5σ\sigma C.L. for \sim 55% choices of δCP\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}, whereas the same for conventional T2HK (ν+νˉ\nu + \bar\nu) setup along with T2K and NOν\nuA is around 30%. As far as the octant of θ23\theta_{23} is concerned, this hybrid setup can exclude the wrong octant at 5σ\sigma C.L. if θ23\theta_{23} is at least 33^{\circ} away from maximal mixing for any δCP\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}.Comment: 18 pages, 28 pdf figures, 1 table.     Caspar Bauhin (1560-1624): Swiss anatomist and reformer of anatomical nomenclature

    Caspar Bauhin (1560-1624) was a Swiss anatomist, physician and botanist. He commenced the study of medicine at a young age in Basel but had to move to Padua after an outbreak of plague in his native place. In Padua, he was privileged to study under Fabricius ab Aquapendente, an accomplished anatomist of his time, and other pioneers in the field of medicine, surgery and botany. He travelled extensively through Italy, France and Germany before finally returning to Basel, where he started to conduct public anatomy dissections and in due course was appointed to the Chair of Anatomy and Botany at the University of Basel. His treatise, Theatrum anatomicum (1605), was considered as the finest comprehensive text in anatomy during that period. Theatrum was highly appreciated as it followed a systemic approach with focus on anatomical anomalies and had a useful set of illustrations. His major contribution to Anatomy was the introduction of a descriptive terminology which replaced the prevalent trend of naming the structures with ordinal numbers and cleared the confusion among anatomists in relation to identification of structures. He was the first to describe the anterior lingual glands (Bauhin’s gland), which are seromucous glands located near the tip of tongue. He is presumed to be the first to report the ileocecal valve, which is also known as Bauhin’s valve. Bauhin’s contributions are a true testimony of his legacy in the domain of anatomical sciences

    Use of mobile learning by first year undergraduate students in a medical college in India

    Mobile handsets are emerging as technology enhanced learning media in medical education. However not much research has been undertaken to explore usefulness of mobile learning among students. This study assessed the perception of first year undergraduate medical students, who are undergoing training in preclinical subjects, towards the application and effectiveness of mobile learning in medical education curriculum. A self-designed, pre-tested questionnaire was framed to explore the outlook towards mobile devices as a learning medium and the questionnaire was administered among 100 first year undergraduate medical students; summative assessment and their responses were collected and analyzed. The completed questionnaire was returned by 98 students after documenting their responses. It was observed that 85.7% respondents had access to smart phones and mobile handset was the preferred learning medium for 49% students. The students had a multifaceted outlook with regards to advantages of mobile learning and in their opinion, it supported a diverse bouquet of learning components. Moreover 44.9% and 25.5% students rated mobile device as an effective and very effective learning medium respectively. A majority (70.4%) of the students admitted that they would continue with mobile learning in future and 73.5% students opined that they would actually recommend their juniors to utilize their mobile devices as a learning medium. First year undergraduate medical students are using their mobile devices as an effective learning medium. Mobile devices have the potential to converge as a one-stop medium that could cater to learning needs of a divergent population of medical students

    Limb salvage surgery with endoprosthesis reconstruction in management of locally advanced primary bone tumours: a functional outcome evaluation

    Background: Endoprosthetic reconstruction using a custom-made metallic mega-endoprosthesis is one of the common modalities for limb salvage operation. The new promising advance of material science, design and fabrication of the endoprosthesis enable an immediate rehabilitation program and provide a durable and functional limb. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and functional outcome in patients with primary bone tumours treated by limb salvage surgery using endoprosthetic replacement.Methods: A total of 14 patients with primary bone tumour in major large joints of the body, selected between January 2019 to August 2020, were managed by limb salvage surgery via endoprosthetic replacement. This was a prospective study conducted at a Tertiary care Government Hospital in Kolkata, and all patients were followed up to a minimum of 1.5 years. The evaluation system used was proposed by Enneking, recommended by the musculoskeletal tumour society in addition to the radiologic evaluation.Results: At final follow-up, the mean musculoskeletal tumour society score was 89.71±3.58. The mean Knee Society Score of 9 patients was 85.55±3.64 and mean Harris hip score of 2 patients and Oxford shoulder score of 4 patients were 90.5 and 41.67 respectively by the end of 1.5 years. 12 (85.7%) patients did not have any complications. None of the cases had implant loosening or breakage, periprosthetic fracture, tumour recurrence or amputation.Conclusions: Endoprosthesis are excellent choices for the treatment of bone tumours with limb preservation in relation to pain, strength, and patient’s emotional acceptance as they reconstruct a limb with an acceptable oncologic, functional, and cosmetic result providing immediate weight-bearing capacity and generating a greater independence

    Assessment of empathy among first-year medical students: A knowledge, attitude and practice study

    Good clinicians are expected to demonstrate empathetic behaviour whereby it is necessary for medical students to develop an empathetic attitude during the curriculum. The anatomy classroom is possibly the ideal place to cultivate the sense of empathy among medical students as they deal with the feelings associated with dissecting a human cadaver. Hence we conducted this knowledge, attitude and practice study to assess the empathetic attitude among first-year medical students. A self designed, pretested questionnaire was framed to explore the sense of empathy and the questionnaire was administered among 100 first year MBBS students before the summative assessment and their responses were collected and analyzed. We observed that 55% and 16.3% of the respondents were inclined for adopting a mechanized approach to patient care as they were in favour of investigation oriented diagnosis and medicine based treatment respectively as primary component of medical practice. Only 16.3% and 12.2% of the respondents prioritized patient oriented approaches in the form of understanding the disease process and emphasizing on communication with patients respectively. During clinical training 70.4% and 15.3% of respondents would concentrate on self development as they look forward to honing their clinical skills and acquiring high level of knowledge respectively. Only 8.2% and 6.1% of the respondents opted for developing patient oriented skills like developing an empathetic attitude and enhancing communication skills respectively. However 60.2% agreed that empathy of a physician does influence the clinical outcome and 74.5% opined that they have developed/enhanced a feeling of empathy by learning anatomy through human cadaver based teaching. Empathy among first-year medical students was on the lower side, however they have developed a baseline empathy level after one year of attending dissection classes in anatomy. Effectively designed education strategies can further enhance the feeling of empathy during clinical training

    COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF EFFICACY AND EFFECTS ON OXIDATIVE STRESS OF AMLODIPINE AND RAMIPRIL IN THE HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS OF NORTH EAST INDIA

    Objective: To compare the efficacy and the effect of the oxidative stress of Calcium Channel Blocker (CCB), Amlodipine and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, Ramipril in the hypertensive patients of North East India.Methods: It is a prospective randomized controlled parallel study of the clinically used antihypertensive drug. Total 75 subjects were included in the study. Out of 75 subjects, 25 numbers were normal healthy subjects and remaining 50 were hypertensive patients. The patients were randomized and divided into two groups; Amlodipine treated group (n=25) and Ramipril treated group (n=25). Amlodipine group received Amlodipine (5-10) mg/day and Ramipril group received Ramipril daily (5-10) mg. All patients were newly detected hypertensive subjects suffering from essential hypertension without any prior antihypertensive therapy. Patients included were either sex (male/female) in age group of 20-65 y with normal fasting blood sugar level (FBS) and free from any other diseases. All groups was subjected to measurement of blood pressure, estimation of blood parameters like FBS, serum lipid profiles, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) and serum glutamate oxaloacetate (SGOT) before antihypertensive treatment. The height, age, weight, health status and lifestyle pattern of patients were recorded. The patients were followed up during 8 w of antihypertensive treatment. Serum levels of glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant (TAS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were estimated before and after 8 w of antihypertensive therapy.Results: The present study indicated that both amlodipine and ramipril have significant effects on normalizing systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) after 8 w of treatment. Ramipril significantly reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) level and increased the serum levels of GSH, TAS and SOD during antihypertensive treatment. Ramipril reduces oxidative stress because of its antioxidant activity during antihypertensive therapy.Conclusion: Amlodipine and Ramipril are effective antihypertensive drugs. ACE inhibitor (Ramipril) has additional benefit of reducing oxidative stress thereby restoring the endothelial dysfunction in the hypertensive patient.Â
